Handling Unexpected PC Death in Way of the Wicked Book 1

Product Discussion

One of the PCs fell in battle with a bunyip during the seal hunt portion of Book 1 and has put me in a bit of a bind as far as integrating a new character since they are on a ship far from civilization.

Would they have the forsaken traits? Thorn's training traits? How would they arrive? Have any other DM's had to deal with this situation in their WotW games?

Any ideas are welcome.

I don't know anything about the adventure itself, but what if the new PCs had been adrift in a rowboat? Perhaps create a run-in with another ship on which the new PCs have passage? What if they were mistakenly teleported to (or near) the ship? Crash landed on a failing flying carpet?

I guess it depends how 'believable' you want the integration of new PCs. ;-)

Take care,

Derek

You could always try to 'hand wave' survival but say the character lost an arm to the bunyip. Yeah it would be a PITA for a while but eventually he would get back to civilization and get a regeneration.

That is an option in my home rules if a player dies but REALLY wants to keep that pc and they are out of Hero Points. But they only get it once.

If it wasn't book one I'd have said how about the PC returns undead? Is thee a fitting low level undead that he could return as? I know the later WotW books have options for Vampire PCs.

Or maybe his masters kept a finger to clone him?

Tell us some more details about the PC and his companions! What level are they now? What classes and backgrounds?

Also would the player want to have his PC somehow revived/returned or would he rather build a new one?

They could find one of the people on board the ship sympathetic to their cause and wish to join them. The ship's captain might even be converted. (I think he's supposed to be an enemy, but there's always some wiggle room for such things.)

Spoiler:
You could easily have the new PC waiting for the knot when they arrive (a certain someone is well informed about the PCs and has minions capable of depositing necessary reinforcements). Just make sure they are properly equipped I comparison to the rest of the party if you have them do any more encounters. Or just skip the ones left and forward to the encampment.

Regardless any new PC should be built with the same restrictions/boons as the rest of the party. They tend to be safeguards to ensure cohesive teamwork as well as background. There are multiple knots, plenty of places new PCs could be from.
