small pc doing medium damage

Advice

hey guys,
friend of mine wanted me to look up a feat/class that allows a small character to do one stage higher(medium) damage. i think i remember a feat that applies to natural or improved unarmed attacks, but not on weapon rolls.

any thoughts?

he's putting together a mouser build for a halfling...

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything that does that. There's a feat that treat yourself as a size category larger when you wildshape as a druid but I don't think that actually affects damage dice. If your player is willing to multiclass with warpriest the halfling favoured classed bonus will effectively give what you're looking for by bumping up the levels for sacred weapon damage but that would require a serious number of levels in warpriest before it starts to matter.

There is 3rd party stuff that allows it. Dreamscarred press has an ability called powerful build that lets you be treated as one size larger for different things, one of them being the size of weapons you can use.

One of the classes that has access to it is the aegis class.

Improved Natural Attack is the feat which does this for a natural weapon.

I can't think of anything directly equivalent for weapons, but for a halfling mouser swashbuckler with a rapier it's +1 damage on average, which is closer to the value of a trait than a feat.

yeah,
still looking for feat/ability that allows small pcs the benefit to use medium weapon damage. he would probably go the dex based fighter route, but wants to use medium weapon damage . no 3rd party or psionics allowed. if it's out there, it would have to be something that went into print fairly recently.

Effortless Lace is the only thing I can think of. Assuming it's a rapier he's planning on using, the difference is only going to be d4>d6; not sure that'd be worth investing in for me personally, but different strokes etc etc.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah - mechanically it's not that big of a difference - probably not worth a feat for a one-handed weapon.

Per 3e small sized PCs just used medium weapons. Fluff wise I like this better: Bilbo's Sting was crafted by Elves and should also be usable by them IMO. Otoh a halflings using a medium two hander is nonsense of course.

ty for help
underfoot adept / mouser build for my friend

take -2 for oversized weapon he is proficient with?
use effortless lace and negate bonus?

it seems this build would be a better buff/debuffer with interesting cmb options

Liberty's Edge

Goblin gunslingers can use medium sized firearms. Can't remember if it's a feat or a deed though.

Moving a small weapon up to medium sized will in most instances only get you 1 more point of damage. You have to be wielding a 1d10 small weapon to make it worth your while. (I play a lot of halflings, and this has been kind of frustrating.)

Mouser is an amazing debuff build, but it's not a primary damage dealer. If you want to deal damage as a mouser, you'll need concentrate on things like Piranha Strike and Risky Striker to increase your static bonuses.

Scarab Sages

There is Impact and Growing weapon enchantments, the Lead Blades spell, and Shillelagh.

Weapon Dice increases aren't really worth it, most of your damage is coming from static bonuses like swashbuckler weapon training and precise strike.

Lead Blades via a wand and UMD or a ranger dip?

Enlarge Person somehow?

Enlarge person is counter-productive to a Mouser. Reduce Person is usually very good for them though.

INA doesn't work on Unarmed Strikes, though, and Halflings don't have natural weapons. The easiest way I know for a Halfling to get natural weapons is via 2 levels in Alchemist and a Discovery, either Feral Mutagen, which gives you 2 Claws and a Bite or Tentacle (which gives you a Tentacle).

There is a Spell, Strong Jaw, which lets one natural attack inflict damage as if it were 2 sizes bigger.

There is a weapon enchantment, Bashing, which causes the weapon to inflict damage as if it were 1 size bigger. The Bashing Shield enchantment is good for 2 sizes, but you can't stack those on 1 shield.

Of course there are also ways to really increase your size: Enlarge Person, Alter Self, Beast Shape, Monstrous Physique, Righteous Might come to mind.

For pumping up Halfling melee damage in general, there are Risky Striker and Power Attack, but my favorite way to up halfling damage is with Sneak Attacks. Learn Quick, Great dirty trick. Make your opponents Blind, then you lock in your Sneak Attack damage. Take Sap Adept and Sap Master, you do lots and lots of damage.

Another possiblility is Grappling. If your goal is not to damage your opponent but rather to tie him up, then just take Greater Grapple and 2 levels in Cavalier Order of the Penitent, and you can Tie Up an opponent in 1 round. Halflings have a -2 size penalty to grappling and a -2 St, but there are so many ways to raise up your Grapple Mod, that it will hardly make a difference. And it would be hilarious watching a halfling throw off his weapons belt and pull off his shirt and strike a wrestling stance as he squares off against a Frost Giant, but it will be even funnier when he wins: that's what we play the game for.

It is most likely not gonna be worth a feat assuming he Will go from 1d4 to 1d6 he will have dex to damage and +1 to hit over a medium guy so he is gonna be better on the offense. Taking a two level dip in kata Master monk(pehaps with moms) May be a good plan to get parry riposte and another Way of going into the baddies square. And snake style is also a powerfull thing if you have precise strike and High AC/ are hard to hit.
