I did the maps for the Starfall adventure for this AP - I just completed them last week, which were 5 maps, though one has four levels on one map and profile views of the main starship. I'm supposed to eventually do the maps for the Nick Logue adventure, Scorpions of Perdition.

I heard them talking about this AP on Know Direction. Science Fantasy is something I really rather like. The fact that it is sword and planet based is just the icing on the cake. I look forward to the Kickstarter whenever it is.

Starfall and Scorpions of Perdition are actually both AP plug-ins for the "Metal Gods" AP - Scorpions of Perdition set around 4th-5th level and Starfall around 12th-13th level. In keeping with the themes of that AP, they are a little more strictly high-tech (mixed with fantasy elements) than the Legendary Planet verse will be.

But they are lovely maps and I think everyone will very much enjoy Starfall when it releases next month!

But.. as an author who has communed with both the publisher and developer, we're aiming for Sword and Planet. Not everyone knows what that means. I struggled with it myself. As "homework" I sat down and watched the film version of "John Carter." Without getting sidetracked about things like critic reviews and what fans of the novels felt about the adaptation, its a great visual two-hour primer on some of the themes and tech levels we're looking at. You'll see guns, energy weapons, flying ships but also a healthy dose of sword-fightin' that comes straight out of sword and sorcery style action.

(And I enjoyed the movie whether that matters or not)

Science Fantasy.

Hope this helps!

John Carter level means two things, a generally MUCH lower tech level than the Technology Guide with psionics or magic thrown in, usually crystal based.

First Men In The Moon, by Jules Verne, is another good example. Outside of the Cavorite used as the anti-gravity paint, everything else is Victorian level technology.

They are very, very nice maps! Now, if you excuse me, I need to finish writing Starfall. <Cracks whip on himself. Twice.>

Barsoom does have a fairly high tech level, they've just got prejudices against armor (and all clothing) and weird decadent rules about guns.

But yeah, if you start ramping up the technology on planetary romance you leave John Carter behind in favor of Flash Gordon. Not that I have any objections to either! :D

(A few months ago I read the entire original newspaper run of Flash up until the point where they go back to Earth for the first time. Aside from the fairly dismal treatment of women, it's pretty cool.)

That sounds very very interesting, because it is going to be exams season for me when the kickstarter starts; can someone send me a PM and remind me to check it out?

I'm all over this. I've only purchased 3 APs, and never kickstartered one. This looks awesome.

We've run 10 tables so far for 59 total players at PaizoCon. They've either experienced "The Assimilation Strain" or "To Worlds Unknown" and every game has been an absolute blast. Not just for the players either. Our volunteer GMs are having a great time with these scenarios, as well. Mission accomplished. Can't wait to Kickstart this AP and get it into everyone's hands.

I cannot wait to see this on Kickstarter! You definitely will get my cash, =).

I love the genre a lot and cannot wait to see it happen!

I saw the prices in the PaizoCon LG power point and it looks rather steep for me to get the whole thing. $100 is still a lot. Granted, it's not much different from Paizo's adventure paths (Newish ones are 16 per volume, old ones are 14 per volume), but I don't buy those either. I don't run published adventures all that often, but when I do, I really dislike the adventure path format...
I'm still going to back to get information about the campaign setting. But I doubt I'll back for all 7 parts. If it's an option, I might back for just the first and last part to see what you come up with for level 20 characters. I did spend 100 on the mythic mania kickstarter (75 for the three PDFs and 25 on a sponsored feat), but I expected to use all of them. For this one, though, 100 dollars is a lot of money for a series of adventures that I might not run at all, and if I do I will almost certainly not run all of them.

How easy do you expect it to be to run later volumes of this AP without having run all previous ones first? My biggest complaint about Paizo APs is the need to run them from the beginning in order. I don't like starting campaigns at first level (3, 6, and 11 are my preferred starting points). Even if I did start from the beginning of a Paizo AP, if the PCs derail the plot half way through the first volume, then parts 2 through 6 aren't particularly helpful. If I could run one of the middle volumes of this AP without having to start from part 1, that would significantly raise the chances of me actually using it.

I suppose that despite my love of high level play and your previous work, my dislike of the AP format means I'm not the target audience for this project. Which is fine. I still want it do to well so that I can get the campaign setting, though:)

(This post is a ramble at 1 am, so it is unlikely to be particularly well written, but I can't really check until the morning.)

Interestingly, the AP itself is designed to start at 2nd level; if you want to start at 1st, you can play The Assimilation Strain prelude adventure, so that part at least fits well with your preference.

You can certainly pledge for only some of the adventures; you need not get all of them if you don't choose to do so.

As for playing the later adventures in the series without playing the previous, you can certainly do that. You'll be missing the ongoing sweep and plot progression of the full series, of course, but there's no reason you can't run it as a standalone adventure using a different adventure hook for why the PCs would want To Kill a Star (or to use whichever middle part you purchased).

You are correct that it is a lot to ask, but this is a lot of content and will require more art and (obviously) maps than the Mythic Mania project, which are two significant expense areas. We are also using the top authors in the business and we need to compensate them fairly. We think the products you will be getting will stand proudly alongside any official product you can name.

Kickstarter page creation has begun! There's a fair bit of work to be done before we go live, of course, but the first shovel is in the ground, courtesy of the lovely and talented Rachel Ventura!

I pushed really hard via Facebook to hit the goal to help make this possible and I am really really excited to for this to not only go live, but hopefully be incredibly successful as well!!

IF a second(or would it technically be a 3rd?) Kickstarter is needed for the campaign setting itself, I will also gladly throw money at that as well.

PS,

In case it wasn't obvious, I will definitely be supporting the LG LP AP KS LOL!!

Thanks for the enthusiasm. We certainly appreciate it, and we hope we can count on everybody interested in the project to spread the word both before launch and especially during the campaign. Word of mouth and recommendations count for a lot in helping a project like this succeed.

As for the campaign setting, we are adopting something like the "Rise of the Runelords" model that Paizo used in building out a campaign setting through the use of adventures. The AP backmatter articles will flesh out a lot of the basics, and the events of the AP will eventually be instantiated as the recent history that sets the tone and direction for the campaign setting to come.

Whether the campaign setting comes together as part of this Kickstarter or a future one depends on how far this project goes. If it really blows up, it might end up part of this project. If our success is more modest, then we'll aim at getting it done down the road, once this AP is well in hand.

As a side note and as matter of distinction, Matt Goodall (who is writing the third adventure in the AP) has suggested and I'm pretty sure we will be adopting the following nomenclature:

Legendary Planet is the adventure path.

Legendary Worlds is the campaign setting where the LP AP takes place.

edit: Oh, and I really enjoyed the John Carter of Mars movie. And I read the books many, many years ago.

You should be having a very happy birthday. One thing we mentioned at our PaizoCon panel is that, unlike a lot of Kickstarters, the way we are structuring this one you will start getting product IMMEDIATELY after the Kickstarter ends. Yes, you read that right.

Once we fund, you should be able to download The Assimilation Strain and To Worlds Unknown the very next day.

As the project rolls along, new adventures should be ready to go every 1-2 months thereafter. Some unforeseen delay could happen, but we are working our hardest to ensure it will not be so.

The full print compilation, of course, will have to wait until all the issues are done, so it would have an estimated completion date around March-April of 2016, but if you pledge for every issue, you'll get each one as it drops, before the general public can get their grubby mitts on them.

Liberty's Edge

You're speaking solely of PDF releases until the "full print compilation," is that right? Will the individual pieces get hardcopy versions?

Consider me utterly stoked about this AP. I love me some science-fantasy sword & planet style gameplay!

Excellent question! Here's the current thought on that among the LG team:

After surveying our previous Kickstarter backers, it seemed like there was much stronger support for a single massive hardcover at the end of the project rather than individual softcover releases of each book. In addition, I'm not sure the economics of individual softcovers work very well, because the logical upcharge to go from the base PDF to the softcover would be mostly eaten up by the actual hard cost of printing and shipping them individually (in addition to the time required to do seven rounds of physical shipping rather than one).

That said, we will be offering each PDF as it comes out in a print-on-demand version for those who want that option, and I could certainly see us offering a discount coupon to any of our Kickstarter backers if they wished to order the softcover print versions.

We are still open to conversation about the issue.

Do people on this thread have a strong desire for print versions of each individual adventure? Let us know!

Liberty's Edge

I am definitely partial to one hardcover and individual PDFs - I like my wall o' Pathfinder AP modules just fine, but one book is probably easier on everybody.

Although that's not to say I wouldn't go ahead and get both anyway, just because I'm moderately insane.

I run campaigns, both at my home table and online from PDFs, but I do like the feel of a good book, so my preference is all PDFs and one big book at the end.

Now, until both my wife and I retired I was a charter AP subscriber, but stopped because of money and I really did not want the sci-fi AP, so I can see folks wanting individual books for each adventure.

-- david

Call me old fashion, but when I read an adventure, I like the printed version in my hand. It's just the feel of the texture, the smell of the paper and ink.

When I run, I am normally using Herolab, so the pdf version works just as well. So I use either, at my whim of the moment.

When researching anything for gaming, i always use the pdf's. it is so much quicker to find stuff using the search function.

So yes, I would love the print version softcovers! I would also love the entire AP in one hardcover at the end. I also want the pdf's. All needs fulfilled, =)

Personally, I don't have a desire for individual softcover issues - keeping it to PDFs and a big hardcover (for those who want the physical version) is probably for the best, especially because you noted that's what a lot of backers seem to prefer. There's a definite value in being able to say "The entire adventure in one book!" on the back cover.

However, I know different people have different preferences - maybe it would be worth running polls that both Kickstarter backers and those on your mailing list(s) can be asked to take part in? If there's enough people interested in buying softcovers to warrant printing them, then I'm all for that - I want this setting to be successful, and part of success involves making the products people want to buy. If there's not enough interest for full runs, though, limiting it to a print-on-demand setup is probably for the best.

I like the idea of the hardcover at the end and a possible discounted POD for those that want the adventures in hand. I personally would take the .pdfs and hardcover and skip the softcovers.

We're back up. It was a hosting glitch - we migrated to a new hosting service two years ago, but evidently some part of something didn't get transferred over and so it was still routed through the original hosting company, so when that expired the webpage went down. Took a few phone calls but got it sorted out.

Speaking of the website, I might just have to go post something now... :)

Glad to hear you're in!

You'll see how seriously with our new Mythic Solutions product that should be up on our site tomorrow and in wide release on Monday. For those who aren't quite ready to dive into the mythic rules whole hog, it presents analysis, explanation, and solution for all of the most common unbalancing elements in the mythic rules, presenting an array of alternative rules to use instead to make the mythic rules (whether used for PCs, the villains, or both) run more smoothly.

Is that new content, or is it essentially the sections at the beginning of chapter 6 of the Mythic Hero's Handbook?

Either way it's good: if it is the same as presented in the MHH, then I can recommend it to people who are hesitant to buy the entire thing. If it is new, then of course I'll want it.

Hi David,

Thanks for letting me know about the issue, though I'm not sure how to help you fix it. I would have suggested a cache clear as well, but if you've done that and it didn't help. It comes up fine for me in Chrome and Firefox.

The guys at the hosting service said that sometimes websites that are removed and then put back up may take as much as 24 hours to propagate back into the various channels throughout the internet, so it may be something as simple as waiting until tomorrow.

As an aside, speaking of new news for Legendary Games, I just posted up a new Kickstarter update to our backers and on our Kickstarter page, and it is also mirrored on our Facebook and Twitter. The proof review stage is done. Let the print run commence!

I am very much looking forward to this AP, ever since the "Legendary 1-on-1" interview with Know Direction I've had all kinds of sword and planet adventuring ideas. I am not a really huge fan of the AP-format itself, but this might very well beome the second AP ever on my shelf (and table, eventually).

Regarding PDFs and print volumes, I favor "all PDFs and one big book in the end". Makes camapaign management so much easier of you don't have to flip back and forth between 6 volumes.

Any chance for some new pieces of information, a teeny tiny sneek peek maybe? Pretty please? :)
