unchained raise of runelords with only 3 PC

Rise of the Runelords

Hi.
I'm going to start a RoR campaign to test some of the new unchained rules (specially the new action economy)

Problem is: we have 3 PC.
Tiefling Oni Spawn Samurai
Varisian Witch
A viking of some kind, class undecided but probably bloodrager, maybe magus skirnir.

RoR is already TPK-happy, even with more players. Also, the new action economy makes it a bit more dangerous.

I let them build 25pt chars. I'm thinking about using hero points too. What else could I do? (i preffer not using GMPC if that's possible)

You can adjust the threat level down a little bit by running with less enemy combatants and/or lower their power level.

You can also let the heroes stay 1 level ahead of the recommended level at various points in the game.

The Exchange

Have the temple in Sandpoint provide steep discounts on healing items. Once the heroes decide to attack Thistletop have Father Zantus load them down with potions of cure light and cure moderate wounds for free since they have Desna's blessings for protecting the town. Maybe even a wand of cure light wounds that your Varisi witch can use. This way the party can spend cash on equipment other than healing potions.

During any encounters in Sandpoint where it is reasonable for one of the city watch to be around, have a level appropriate member of the watch with them (a warrior of the same level as the party). Keep changing out the watchman on different game days. If the party asks Sheriff Hemlock why he keeps sending a tag-a-long with them in town, or if he has the town watch spying on them he can say, "It's good experience for the town watch to help seasoned professionals like yourselves. Just try not to get my boys killed." Make sure that each of these warriors has toughness as a feat so they don't get splattered too quickly. This will make sure that the party has a 4th man when they go into the glass-works and the catacombs of wrath.

The Exchange

And when the party goes into Thistletop have Shalelu go with them. She stays in the background and uses her bow at all times, letting the PCs get up close and personal.

Any time she isn't needed you can have Bruthazmus jump out and fire pot shots at Shalelu. Shalelu then disappears to play hide ans seak with Bruthazmus for a while as the party continues. Then, if the party gets in a little over their head, Shalelu shows back up to restore balance.

The Exchange

I'm full of ideas today.

When you get past Burnt Offerings and start Skinsaw, have Ameiko tag along and boost the party with her bardic abilities, but otherwise stay out of all the fights. That way the heroes get to be the heroes an Ameiko gets her taste for adventure fulfilled.

When you get to Hook Mountain you of course switch back to having Shalelu tag along.

Finally the viking took Bloodrager 1/Cleric X, so they'll have the healing part a bit more covered.

I plan to use following things:

1) Fame and Prestige. When they become the Heroes of Sandpoint, they start to earn fame and prestige, and they can trade that for boons, spells, favors and items, just like in PFS. So after the first battle they probably can afford a Wand of Cure Light Wounds, paying prestige instead of gold.

2) Hero Points. They get one of them when they become heroes, and start gaining them regularly, as long as they keep doing heroic things (which is basically the whole AP). Extra actions can help them in those encounters where the action economy is expected to be 4 actions per group.

3) the samurai is going to have a mount. The witch has a familiar (Which will be an improved familiar later), and the cleric is going to be a cleric of Erastil, with either Fur or Feather domain (so he'll have a dire wolf or a giant eagle, using the stats of Roc). Extra bodies and actions from companions help a lot when the party is small.

4) they'll start with 25 points, which is more than we ussually play with.

I think this should be enough, but I'll keep an eye watching the encounters. If I see there's some problems, I might tweak some encounter, removing a goblin here and there, or removing a level from a particularly strong BBEG. I'll do that only in the case it's needed, though

I dunno if you really need hero points. If the witch takes slumber hex, the entire first book scoops to him. Too bad the barbarian guy isn't just going full cleric, you guys would have it no problem
