I get super excited every year when it comes time for Kobold Press to do there annual kickstarter. I think the topics and content so far have been fun and engaging. Although I must confess I keep hoping they will do a Kickstarter for a Bestiary. And to back up this hope/request I have scrubbed through all of the Kobold Press PRPG and 3.5 Online Articles, Kobold Quarterly Magazines, Books, and PDFs for every monster I could find. Could you imagine a Bestiary with:

And this is only the ones I caught and I am certain I missed a few, not to mention several variant versions of existing monsters and re-skinned monsters that are not listed. Oh, and a few of these like the unique outsiders could benefit from an update with the Mythic Rules and maybe by next year some of these monsters might favor some updates with the Occult/Psychic rules!
Brinebeast |
I think some of these are in the Midgard Bestairy
Actually all of the monsters in the Midgard Bestiary are on the list but their are way more monsters listed hear than what you'll find in the Midgard Bestiary.

I more hope for Deep Combat than another Bestiary. I already got a Midgard Bestiary, 4 Paizo bestiaries, a Monster Codex, a Psionic bestiary, a Tome of Horrors, a Kaiju Bestiary, a Construct Bestiary, assorted junk from all kind of books and even a third party bestiary full of templates multiplying these things by god knows how much. I think a 'martials get nice things finally' is way more valuable.

I believe each Bestiary the Kobolds toll over is a carefully calculated undertaking because they are art heavy projects.
Even republishing monster with existing art assets takes a certain effort, whether from new layout or perhaps an updated depiction to bring it up to parity with newer entries.
It is certainly something that should be considered, but there have been a few high profile PF bestiaries or monster oriented books from a variety of publishers (Paizo and 3PP) over the last few years, are people monster'ed out yet? Not sure. Monsters seem an evergreen topic...

Monster books seem to indeed be ever popular. You can never have enough cool monsters!
A big, thick, beautiful full-color hardcover Kobold Press bestiary with all new, full-color art encompassing some or even all of the monsters on the OP's list would be pretty amazing, wouldn't it? Heck, I think it would practically a must-have for gamers just about everywhere!
I would certainly be a massive undertaking though ...

The animated hooded lantern, if I recall correctly, came from an adventure, I think it involved swamps or ships.
A hard back full color tome of KP monsters, yes please!
Stretch goals could include converting KP monsters that have only appeared in 4E into PRPG.
Isuru |
With some monsters getting an art treatment as if they were from pages ripped right from medieval bestiaries and manuscripts. Backers vote which monsters get illuminated.
Perhaps some monsters get a lair write-up with location-based magical properties, as many classical monsters were tied to mythic places of power.
MMCJawa |
The Midgard Bestiary is currently my favorite 3p Bestiary (and I love monsters so I have accumulated quite a few)
I would definitely buy, as long as the quality held up to the Midgard book. I admit to be a bit peeved that the short Fey bestiary they did a year or so ago had a lot of unillustrated critters.
Isuru |
The magic system's inherent ease of expandability made Deep Magic an intuitive project (not to mention an extensive back catalog of material across a couple of editions), which happened to translate to a popular Kickstarter. To date I believe it remains the highest funded 3PP rules supplement and amongst the highest 3PP projects overall.
Martials on the other hand have a dozen minor subsystems to jury-rig and patchwork their way towards their goal, some of which involve minor/partial spellcasting. Many 3PP and even Paizo have tried to tag on more extensive subsystems or loosened up existing class ability tress to give them the same flexibility and efficacy, all to varying degrees of success.
It's a much messier affair.
What should "Deep Combat" be?
A book of feats? KP has various offerings with class oriented feats.
Something like Unchained? There's also Rogue Genius' Talented line.
What ground isn't covered by other company products like:
- Dreamscarred's Path of War
- TPK's Laying Waste
- Little Red Goblin Games' Dragon Tiger Ox
- Some of the choices from Amora Games' Liber Influxus Communis
- The various sword/weapon master type classes out there
And that's just at a glance. Apologies if I missed other 3PPs with martial material released.

The rules for advancing monsters via hit-dice in the 3.5 MM (which work better than their PF counterparts IMO) lessened my interest in having tons of monsters a little...
but having tons of templates essentially killed my further interest in acquiring more monster books, since the monsters I have can be modified in so many ways. I have the 3.5 Book of Templates (which, AFAIK, has never been converted to pathfinder, but is still useable as-is). I have the 3.5 version of the Advanced Bestiary. I have Rite's Book of Monster Templates. I have Rite's 101 Not So Simple Monster Templates. I don't (yet?) have the PF Advanced Bestiary, but I can pretty easily use the 3.5 version on pathfinder monsters. Just from those, there's an endless range of monsters I can make with just the first bestiary and templates. But I don't just have the first bestiary's worth of monsters. I also have the Psionic Bestiary, and can access Paizo's bestiary 2-4 on the srd. And ToHC.
And then there's 3.5 monsters. It's not immediate to convert monsters from 3.5 to PF or vice versa, since they increased the HD, BAB, skills, and saves of many creature types, and PF monsters get more feats. But I've found that often I don't even need to convert them! To use a 3.5 monster in PF, I just compute CMB and CMD, use the rest of the statblock as it is. I deduct one from the monster's CR, to account for the general number inflation in PF monsters.
So yea, I agree with Malwing. There are more monsters than I need now, and with templates there are more than I could ever use. I'm not interested in another monster manual.
wackyanne |
The great thing about a Kobold Press Bestiary is that, particularly with KP's experience writing the first campaign for the edition, a D&D5E version would be as welcome as the Pathfinder. Granted, that would take more work converting the stats, but Wolfgang Baur has already said he's got 5E projects just waiting for the licensing to go official. And the art costs would cover for both versions.
Something like Deep Combat would likely only work for Pathfinder, though.

Y'know this is why martials don't get nice things.
LOL
It's certainly not the same as Deep Magic (or the afore-mentioned 'Deep Combat'), but I would heartily recommend that folks looking for a 'martials get nice things' type of book check out the recently released Kobold Guide to Combat

Isn't that mostly essays as opposed to crunch? I have no idea. I passed on it because I have absolutely no idea what it is.
I get why we don't get too many 'martials get nice things' books but martial/caster disparity is one of the most frequent subjects in this game and sometimes I feel like its compounded by the sheer volume of material not for them. And not just more books and PDFs but fat ones with a ton of options.
But I think we have the tools to make it work out now. Style feats are kind of limited to Monks but their models can be great to fit onto feats that could make fighty types have a bit more flair.
The Stamina System is out and probably won't be supported for a while. I took steps myself to use similar third party products to make it more than just a feat booster but the power behind and array of effects and styles.
One thing about prepared casters is that they can rewrite their spell lists. What if you could do that with martial techniques?
What about more things like support for called shots giving new called shot effects?
How about new kinds of boons for special combat skills?
What about combat buffs based on mental stats?
Magus has a serious lack of variety when it comes to touch spells that he can use for spellstrike, why not more martial magic for our half casters?
Or better yet, a bit-o-magic martials can gain, like wards to help with will saves, more combat alchemy, more combat focused runes and glyphs?
There's design space untapped I just get cynical when we just pass up the idea of trying, and it seems like half the solutions is to make new martials or more magical martials rather than making combat itself more viable.

Sounds like you have some ideas of where you see martial powers developing. Consider working that up into something more formally formatted and shopping it around to publishers.
The seed of Deep Magic originated from the large collection of spells built up over the years from dozens of KP sources. A tome of that size wasn't created over night, though the support it gained from the crowd-funding and crowd-sourcing expanded it beyond its original content.
One thing about prepared casters is that they can rewrite their spell lists. What if you could do that with martial techniques?
This gets into the design territory of maneuvers and there are a few companies trying their hand at that right now.
What about more things like support for called shots giving new called shot effects?
How about new kinds of boons for special combat skills?
Aren't boons granted from specific situations or NPCs? Relying on extra-character sources doesn't bode well for the self-sufficiency of martial powers.
What about combat buffs based on mental stats?
Isn't one of the criticisms of the martial/magical disparity rooted in MAD, with spellcasters relying heavily on their one primary stat while martial types typically make use of several stats, yet everyone more or less has the same average stat points to spread over everything. Using mental stats for a martial type already relying heavily on their physical stats means they're pulling their focus in many directions.
Magus has a serious lack of variety when it comes to touch spells that he can use for spellstrike, why not more martial magic for our half casters?
Or better yet, a bit-o-magic martials can gain, like wards to help with will saves, more combat alchemy, more combat focused runes and glyphs?
These things (wards, runes, glyphs) have probably been tried many times over, but I think most of them are through the implementation of feats and that directly competes with using feats for martial skills.
There's design space untapped I just get cynical when we just pass up the idea of trying, and it seems like half the solutions is to make new martials or more magical martials rather than making combat itself more viable
I think that is the core of the problem, where the system provide little impetus to develop martial goodies (aside from the limited feat system) unlike with magic where easy drop-in & play spells makes expansion of magic a part of the natural course of things. Often times making martial types equal involves co-opting some of the tricks of magical types.
This is not to knock you for your ideas. I agree it would be nice to have a big book of martial stuff like Deep Magic, but it feels much further off due to there being fewer offerings along those lines than the plethora of spells that formed the foundation of Deep Magic.

So any chance we will get a pathfinder version of the newly announced Tome of Beasts?
This book already exists for Pathfinder-- it's just spread across three books:
1. Midgard Bestiary
2. Southlands Bestiary
3. Book of Drakes
and maybe, perhaps:
I'd be unsurprised if the giants from Larger Than Life were in there, too.
I wouldn't expect a Pathfinder single tome until the smaller ones were out of print, honestly.
-Ben.

Since this is the Pathfinder 3PP forum, many may not know what Kickstarter Brinebeast is referring to. You can check it out here: Tome of Beasts
If folks would like to see a Pathfinder version of this MASSIVE, richly-illustrated, full color, hard cover tome, by all means let your voices be heard - here in this thread or where ever! Believe me, Kobold Press absolutely LOVES Paizo and LOVES the Pathfinder RPG so I'd say there would be pretty much zero hesitation to do a Pathfinder version of the Tome ... but, again, there has to be a demand for it.
Having said that, even if you don't play 5E, you can still get involved in this huge Kickstarter (funded within the first 24 hours, 500+ backers so far, and more than twice the initial funding goal in just a few days!) because, in addition to the Tome of Beasts, there is also a companion book, the Book of Lairs, which presents short, detailed lairs, including an Alchemist's Guildhall, Bloodstone Grove, the Umbral Tower, and the Lost Halls of Everforge.
Each lair comes with a 24" by 36" battle map for use in virtual table tops, projectors, or printing out full-color and ready for play! And, if we get enough backers, an option to get beautiful printed versions of the maps should become available.
Best of all, Pathfinder fans can back this project and then ONLY opt for the Book of Lairs (which should be fairly system lite, and easily converted to Pathfinder etc) and battle maps, or even *just* the battle maps themselves!
Check out the Kickstarter for full details of course, but you can pledge just $12 and get all the full-scale battle maps in high-resolution (no matter how many battle maps end up becoming part of it!)
$25 gets you project's battlemaps *plus* the Book of Lairs
So, even though this Kickstarter is primarily for 5E fans, there are still some awesome goodies for Pathfinder fans! :)
Marc Radle |
Thanks silverhair! Agreed on the printed battle maps. It's all a matter of having enough backers (I think the number I head is about 1,000 backers). That's a very doable number though - there are already more than 500 backers after only 3 days after all!
The key now is to spread the word - even a backer at $1 counts as a backer!
Thanks sepik121 - vote noted!

I would love to see a Tome of Beasts Pathfinder version. The only exception for me would be to replace the Southlands monsters with different monsters since we already have them in an amazing full color bestiary. There are so many awesome monsters from koboldpress.com that need to be in a full color bestiary!

This I'd go for. Sorry, no 5e interest. (Savage Worlds or AGE, I'm in.)
Although honestly, I'd rather see more Midgard-specific topics: an updated Players Guide all-in-one for the regions like what's being done with Advanced Races, a Kobold Guide to Dark Fantasy, hex maps, another city supplement, etc.
Marc Radle |
Thanks BPorter! There are a bunch of cool Pathfinder goodies in the works - who knows? One or more of those ideas just might be among them :)
Quick Kickstarter update - more than 650 backers and over $52,000 raised so far with 22 days still to go!
If you are following this mainly for the Book of Lairs, battle maps etc. one of the $50,000 goals which is now unlocked is a second set of 100 digital monster tokens (that means it's up to 200 digital monster tokens now)
Oh, and don't forget, word is that if we get up in the 1,000'ish backers range (which seems very possible) some very awesome things happen (including very possibly the addition of the battle maps in glorious printed form!)
Marc Radle |
Another milestone reached last evening (well, two actually, and they both hit at almost the exact same time, which was kinda cool :) ...
More than 750 backers and $60,000 raised so far!
That means a new update:
Update #8: Monster Submissions Unlocked! And 5 More Monsters Added
... and new stretch goals!
- All backers are now eligible to submit a monster to the Tome of Beasts - the 5 best will be printed in the book!
- A second adventure to backer’s rewards
- 5 more humanoid monsters added to the book!
- Adding the Lair of the Void Dragon to the Book of Lairs ... with a map by MtG artist Jason Engle!
Be sure to check out the full update for all the details :)

Cool article about the Tome of Beasts Kickstarter over on io9.com today

I can't either. :)
Seriously, we have SO MUCH GOOD STUFF in this project, it's hard to talk about it without raving a little. The demon lords (and we just added one more!), the lunar devils, the freaking void dragons!!
Even a couple new snakes and vermin for variety at the very basic level. There's everything from mooks to earthshakers, dungeons to deserts, and fey to facehuggers. (Well, sort of---lets call them monsters with no sense of personal space!)
Marc Radle |
Sounds like an epic dilemma! :) Maybe this will help ...
Kobold Press is happy to announce that Smiteworks LLC is bringing the Tome of Beasts and the Book of Lairs to the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop!
There are a number of different ways you can take advantage of this and they all include multiple items for use in Fantasy Grounds: art, stats, and tokens for Tome of Beasts; and 16 high-resolution maps, lair write-ups, and the lair set of tokens for Book of Lairs.
In other news (I always wanted to say that! :) be sure to listen to Wolfgang's interview over at Geek Nation. It's about 8 minutes in if you want to get right to it!
