(HB) Planet of the Dinosaurs!!

Homebrew and House Rules

PART I: IDEAS

Xychotic suggested that I do a planet of the Dinosaurs. Apparently, he had been reading his 2e books and read the part of the saurials in his Complete Book of Humanoids, and suggested that I do a world based on Planet of the Apes, but populated with Dinosaurs.

So lets start with the gimmick first. That is the dinosaur races. And so I thought about it. First of all, Robert J. Sawyer wrote a Sci-Fi saga of an empire populated by Dinosaurs about the rise of Natural Philosophy. All of his dinosaurs were descended from Nano-Tyrannosaur (which I think is still considered a separate species).

He wanted a planet of the Apes sort of setup. I don't think that is wise (TSR, inc. already did it, see above). So, here we go, a planet ruled by dinosaurs.

Concept: In another part of the Universe, life arose and we have dinosaurs who had become Sentient. On this world, the dinosaurs are the ones that think, philosophize, imagine, and reason. The planet occupies a different orbit than Phaeselis' Earth.

The planet of the Dinosaurs is a lush, green, blue planet, with as many seas as Earth.

RACES:
Rather than go the Planet of the Apes society's route (and remember, chimpanzees are violent), the planet's society is like any other fantasy world. But have dinosaur equivalents to the races of humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, half-orcs, and halflings. All the worlds' sapient dinosaurs -- except one -- are descended from Theropod dinosaurs.

Pts 2 through however many will have race setups using the ARG. I'm working on Pathways for May and a Commission right now. :)

PART 2:
Race Write-Ups

Saurians (Nanotyrannus) (Race equivalent: Human)

Description: Saurians are the racial equivalent of the human race. The most populated race, the Saurians have a humanoid body, tails, and five fingers and a thumb. They also have five beast toes and walk digitgrade. They are like us humans in regards to all the dinosaurs.

The Saurians are not at all tyrants of their kingdoms. Instead, the government is pretty much like ours, full of politicians, actors, and others. The Saurian-society is a complex society, like human societies that we know so well.

RACE TRAITS (14 RP total)

  • Monstrous Humanoid: Saurians have evolved from the dinosaur Nanotyrannus lacensis and have humanoid bodies and proportions. The beautiful Saurian is based on the Golden Ratio, like the human body. (3 RP) They also have the Reptilian trait

  • Medium sized: Saurians are medium-sized, and have a base speed of 30 ft. (0 RP)

  • Ability Scores: Saurians are considered Flexible (+2 to any ability score -- 2 RP) on the Planet of the Dinosaurs. On a planet dominated by humans however, Saurians have a tough time relating to humans because of their reptilian nature. They are also slightly faster and stronger. (+2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma -- 1 RP).

  • Flexible Bonus Feat: Like humans, Saurians gain a flexible bonus feat. They can select one extra feat at 1st level. (4 RP)

  • Skilled: Saurians gain an additional skill rank at 1st level and one additional skill rank whenever they gain a level. (4 RP)

  • Bite: Saurians gain a natural bite attack, dealing damage equivalent to that of a creature two size categories lower than normal for their size (1d2 for Small races, 1d3 for Medium, etc.). The bite is a primary attack, or a secondary attack if the creature is wielding manufactured weapons. (1 RP)

  • Languages: All Saurians speak Sauric Common on the Planet of the Dinosaurs. They have xenophobic attitudes towards languages (0 RP).

    ---------------------

  • PART 3:
    Raptors (Deinonychus) (Race Equivalent: Elf)

Description: Raptors* are muscular, but lithe humanoid dinosaurs that have evolved from Deinonychus. They are fast and agile and have built a civilization in the forests. Evolved from a different species than the Saurians, the Raptors are considered to be wise and knowledgeable about the forests. They also work hard to live with the environment around them, and are skilled at magic. Raptors are typically seen as barbarians by the Saurians.

    * Don't click if you have a boss or a bunch of coworkers that blush when they see other bodies in the nude. It may get you into a lot trouble.

    RACIAL TRAITS (11 RP total)

  • Monstrous Humanoid (Reptile) -- As saurians, they are Monstrous Humanoids with the Reptilian trait. (3 RP)

  • Medium sized. (0 RP)

  • Speed: Raptors are evolved from a species that is agile on their feet, so they have a base speed of 40 ft. (+1 RP)

  • +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: Raptors are fleet of foot and fleet of thought. But they have a hard time relating to other dinosaur races. (Specialized 1 RP)

  • Raptorian Magic: Raptors gain a +2 bonus on caster level checks made to overcome spell resistance. In addition, they also receive a +2 racial bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify the properties of magic items. (3 RP)

  • Nimble Attacks: Raptors receive Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. (2 RP)

  • Natural Attack: Raptors have a claw attack, their front talons can deal 1d4 pts of damage. (1 RP)

  • Languages: Raptors start with Sauric Common and Raptorian. Raptors may learn: Cardonic, Draconic, Flightian, and --- I'll fill the rest in later.
