Apparently he said so on his facebook page. And someone from ENworld saw it.

I wonder if he is one of those freelancers they hire to write APs or if they gave him a job there. Not even sure he works on D&D.

He would bring Paizo's knowhow about APs, that is for sure.

I remember his work on the 3rd edition stuff. Hopefully this is a good thing and if he is working on 5th edition stuff, I am hoping it brings nothing but good stuff.

Wasn't he making his own RPG via a kickstarter?

And I also think he got a new job in Indiana. To face new challenges.

He has a goodbye thread on these boards somewhere.

It's been delayed:

He's being brought in to do something with FR lore.

Strange candidate.

What's strange about that? Sean was co-author of Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting for 3rd edition and Races Of Faerun. and worked on many other 3rd edition Forgotten Realms sourcebooks.

Don't forget Faiths and Pantheons, he was the wotc God writer before pathfinder :-)

Didn't Erik Mona and Eric Boyd write that?

So you're right, my mistake:-)

It's been a few years, thanks :-)

He has defined his role. HE seems to indicate that he will make sure third parties who produce licensed products have their story/lore/fluff right.

Sovereign Court

With luck this will mean that more licensed products are in the works.

Yes. But he did handle the "gods" section of the 3.5 Player's Guide to Faerun, I believe.

I would enjoy Blackmoore or Mystara, but that is less likely than even Spelljammer.

He specifically said "I'm helping sort out lore and other content (primarily for FR) so WotC licensors (like videogame companies) have easy access to the info they need." I would assume it is to more making sure that things like the Elemental Evil video game stays in FR lore and less about getting more new RPG material out.

I dunno, this constant hiring back and forth, i'm not sure it's that great for the industry. Nothing against Sean, some of his work I like, some I don't care for.
But it comes off as clique-ish. And seems to discourage honest critiquing by those in the "clique" about each other.
You wind up with gaming philosophies that are considered sacrosanct and any disagreement is considered heretical because to hold an opposing viewpoint may offend your future/past/future employer/coworkers.

You can kind of see one of the results on the boards here where negative talk of wotc is heavily discouraged, ostensibly because Paizo's employee is tomorrows WoTC employee. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen posts where people preaching the superiority of a different companies products are treated better and with more tolerance(by site admins) then people defending the product and company that actually owns the forum.

I may be completely wrong, it's just a feeling that has developed over the decades playing rpgs.

which begs the question for me.. why would you pick Sean over Ed Greenwood?

Doesn't sound like something Ed would want to do at his age, that's a project best left to the young, like SKR :-)

I'd say it's the same as any other industry. People tend to move around different companies within their area of expertise. And with the RPG industry being as small as it is, it's not surprising to the see the same names and companies come up again and again.

May I recommend some Pathfinder compatible material (or 5e compatible material) produced by a small publisher?

Heck, I can recommend some good books from publishers I have never worked for nor have I hired them.

Pretty much this exactly.

Heck, it's pretty common for Paizo employees and Wizards employees to hang out socially and even game together regularly. In fact, there are games made up of Paizo employees, Wizards employees, and/or folks from other big 3PP companies. The fact is, many of these people are friends that just happen to work for competing companies.

Let's face it, Sean is a very cool guy and a heck of a talented game designer. Whatever company he works for is lucky indeed!

So, what you are telling us, is that designers at WotC got some Paizo designers and stole all their trade secrets!

All industries are cliquish. Some companies, like paizo make an effort to bring in new talent, others rely on the people they know. Others are somewhere in between. And somehow I am really skeptical that SKR was highered because he never said something that upset or insulted anyone. He is sort of known for speaking his mind and being willing to be blunt.

Negative talk about WotC is so heavily discouraged because we dont want the massive flame wars that goes with it. Not sure how familiar you are with the days around the end of 3rd edition, the start of 4th and the ride of Pfrpg, but there were some rediculously heated arguments across all gaming communities about it. It got nasty, it wasnt productive, and it just created a negative environment. Things are calmer now, but you often see some of the same venom in various posts.

Dredging up the Flame Wars of Yore does nobody any good, and it's not because of employees or freelancers (past, present, or future). It's because it's toxic and damaging to the community as a whole, and more gamers are good for everybody, no matter the company.

I just wish he had never left Paizo. Great guy, great material he has created.

You know, if it were me, and I got to work at Paizo? You couldn't drag me away from this place.

Of course if I was cast as James Bond, Dr Who or Angel; you couldn't drag me away from those roles either.

Am I crazy or just obsessive? Never can understand why anyone would choose to leave Utopia....

I certainly don't know what it's like to work for either company, but I would surmise that burnout is a potential issue. Focusing one's creative energy on a single product (or product line) might be limiting (or simply exhausting) to someone over time - especially when you are not able/allowed to work at your own pace, and/or simply don't have the creative energy to do other things at the same time.

Creative types sometimes have trouble being limited to one creative outlet.

As far as I know, these companies don't offer vacation hours that allow you to take off 6 months (with pay) to clear your head or explore other creative outlets. :)

(And, of course, a company can go off in a creative direction that doesn't jive with one's creative passion, worsening the issues above.)

His god articles were becoming increasingly stale - just compare the early ones with the more recent. You could tell he was getting bored with them, instead of something inspired they read more like a word-count chore.

I think Paizo should pay more attention to their content and recognize that slippage in quality means their writers are growing bored churning out the same very specific stuff over and over.

As readers we are happy when the writers are enthused about what they are writing. Its pretty easy to tell if a writer is inspired or bored.

True, I was getting bored with them... and it didn't help that 69 is a demon lord, 71 is a horseman of the apocalpyse, 77 is a demon lord, and 78 is a demon lord, all of which are very similar in their philosophy of "we accept worship from anyone, without any restrictions on what you can do with your power, so long as you are evil evil evil."

(Adam could tell I was getting tired of the repetition.)

But Brigh and Zyphus were definitely fun to write. :)

What conventions do you think you will be at in the future? I would very much love to buy you a drink and perhaps beg an indulgence.

Also, I really REALLY like the writeup for Cyprus, and I plan to make a cleric of brigh soon.
