Charles Xavier chair

Homebrew and House Rules

So my DM and I were chatting a bit and we started speculating as to how some items in comics and such would work in Pathfinder. For example, we wanted to see how we could make the floating chair of Charles Xavier.

We figured things like a wheelchair with levitation or something among those lines but I thought I might as well ask what other people would think.

How would you go about it? Thanks!

There is a floating chair item already, just can't recall the name. Also Carpet of Flying.

It all depends on how far you want to go with it. Maybe you should check out the 3.5 Weapons of Legacy splatbook, to get an idea of what I mean.

Anyway, you could start out with a chair on a floating disk spell, then go to levitate, and eventually all the way to fly. Also, look into the bound-elemental magitech from Eberron -- there's another angle.

Comfy box with 1,001 contingency spells . . . .

Really? I do wonder what the name is then. Do you know where to find it?

Well we're looking for the ultimate version for s+#@s and giggles and a version that's actually affordable and usable in game.

The Soaring Cathedra from the Taldor book probably fits the bill. The Pendulate Divan from the same book might also fit the bill, depending on how much you want to spend on it.

Accept no substitute ....

CAULDRON OF FLYING
Price 40,000 gp; Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Weight 100 lbs.
This iron pot is large enough for two Medium humanoids to stand in comfortably. Upon command, the cauldron and up to 500 pounds of additional weight can fly as if using overland flight. The cauldron moves under the direction of the person who spoke the activating command word. It can carry up to double its capacity, but doing so reduces its speed to 30 feet. It can hover in place without the need for a Fly skill check. The cauldron provides partial cover for anyone standing in it. It has a hardness of 10 and 60 hit points.
CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Cost 20,000 gp
Craft Wondrous Item, overland flight

Might be yeah. I'll take a look.

Well like I said earlier, we were looking at ways to make one ourselves. It's more interesting in both RP and game wise if we made one ourselves.

An enlarged air elemental (or not if you're a small creature). With permanency its an easy trick. Plus it's super fast.

I don't recall it's possible to use the Permanency spell on an elemental?

I'm not even sure what you'd be Permanency-ing. You can't do that with a Summon spell, that I know of, and there's no "Enlarge Outsider" that I can really think of (unless it's a level 4 Abyssal Bloodrager).

I was also going to point out that permanently enslaving an intelligent being is a bit evil... But let's face it, Charles is a jerk anyway. He probably wouldn't be above that.

I'd think that one of the items listed above would suit the bill. That or a custom magic item.

Dotting.

Funny, I was wondering how to do that the other day, not with a chair, but flying around on a levitating floor pillow (a' la the Ancient One in Marvel comics). I suppose reskinning a flying carpet might work, but I was really looking more for a slowly moving levitation rather than flight.

Also, is there a way to do this with spells rather than a magic item?

I've tried to do this many many times, mainly because I always wanted to play a mage that was to lazy to walk.

The problem that will quickly arise with basing something off the floating disk is that it can not cross water, chasms, or climb a ladder/rope/etc. So I ruled that out.

Items based on flying carpets became to expensive to get a lower levels, so I never went that route.

An animate object could work somewhat, say an arm chair that can use its arms to climb and has some jumping ability. Another route I considered was to carve a chair out of a live tree and then cast awaken on it.

The closest I have come in game was to research a spell similar to phantom steed that I dubbed Atavar's Perambulent Cathedra. (He was a mystic theurge.) I did not know about the e Soaring Cathedra at the time so I didn't steal that name. Incidentally I notice the speed of the e Soaring Cathedra is only 10 feet, so I don't think that is a good item for an adventurer.

I've been planning a character with similar needs.

One option I've been considering is making use of an Improved Familiar Air Elemental.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Any problem can be solved with air elementals.

Need to create a flying chair? Air elemental.
Want a pet that you don't have to feed? Air elemental.
Want a portable supply of air to explore oxygenless environments? Air elemental.
Have an infidel that questions your academic profile? Air elemental.

Enlarge person if it's your familiar.

I'm if you're summoning it just summon a bigger one.
