Race Selection

Pathfinder Society

I am having a slight problem with understanding the way that the Additional Resources is wording this.

"To create an aasimar, dhampir, fetchling, grippli, goblin, ifrit, oread, ratfolk, samsaran, suli, sylph, tiefling, undine, or vishkanya character, you must have a Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation. Aasimars and tieflings that were created and had at least one xp applied before August 14, 2014, remain legal for play. The boon restriction to create a kitsune, nagaji, and wayang was removed at the start of Season 6 and all three are now available for open creation."

"Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation."

When I follow the resource guide, it shows that Goblin is legal but I am just not understanding the 'Chronicle sheet' part. Does this mean that I need the race to be selectable? ((Starting at Season 3, where advance race guide is usable))

Question 2: The Aasimars, does this mean that they can not be played if there was no character created before August 14th, 2014 unless it had 1exp? ((I have someone who would like to try to make such a character))

I've flagged this to move to the PFS forum.

That said, you need to have a race boon (chronicle) to make a character of any of the restricted races. You can not currently make a goblin or aasimar without an appropriate race boon for PFS.

To play any of those races, you need something called a boon, usually given to GMs at conventions.

The aasimar and tiefling used to be selectable without a Chronicle sheet, but were retired from active rotation. Now you need a Chronicle sheet.

Any questions? :)

Thank you, thank you.

If you want to play one of those listed races, you must have a chronicle sheet (similar to the one you get at the end of an adventure), often called a boon, that specifically allows the creation of a character of that race. The only way your friend can play an Aasimar/Tiefling without a boon is if he created one before August 14, 2014 and it earned at least one experience point before that date.

What portion of the text is causing confusion? Do you have any suggestions for clarifying it?

It can be confusing for new players, who read that you need a "Chronicle Sheet" and wonder how they can first play a Core Race, obtain a "Chronicle Sheet" with that character, and then use it to make that character morph into this new race.

Which, of course, isn't how it's done, but without a basis to go off of, it can be confusing.

The notion of Convention Boons is often unknown to them, until they hear about how they acquire one. Many ppl want their first character to be an exotic race (like the OP's friend).

I don't think the language can be improved at all. It's something that just gets understood after playing a session or two.
