And, only about $1000 away from hitting that magical funding goal and then the stretch goals start to really roll out (including the Minotaur as a fully detailed player race ... and lots of other cool stuff yet to be announced!)

Please spread the word and consider backing - you'll be glad you did! :)

I pledged yesterday and I know you will be funded easily.

You will probably reach the first stretch goal also.

Aaaaannnnndddddd ... FUNDED!!!!

Now come the stretch goals!

First up, cool stuff like HeroLab files, additional chapters on minotaur, trollkin and drow ... and that's for starters :)

Only $300 or so until the Minotaur chapter is added to the book!

For everyone paying attention to this project, I have some simple instructions for you to get in on the fun for free!

Step One: Go to the Kobold Press Facebook page.

Step Two: Scroll until you see the banner with the darakhul art (ghoul looking dude with the scepter).

Step Three: COMMENT "Famine rules!" in the comments. You know. Because Famine and ghouls.....

Step Four: LIKE and SHARE that post because ghouls rock and pansy breathing creatures are merely food.

Do these things and I promise great things in your (soon to be undead) character's future!

Liberty's Edge

Woo hoo! The Minotaurs chapter is now FUNDED! The archetypes, labyrinth magic, might and fury of the minotaurs are gonna make an awesome addition to the Compendium.

That means the Advanced Races Compendium is now up to 15 meaty chapters!

Next up: Hero Lab files, the Trollkin chapter (chapter 16!), even MORE awesome art, and ... Chapter 18, Drow!

Keep spreading the word! There are even more new race chapters to be revealed!!!! Let's see just how many additional chapters of new, playable PC races we can get into the book before it's all over :)

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Actually, the now-unlocked Minotaurs are Chapter 16!

16 chapters?

I am declaring the "Official Number of the Apocalypse" to be 19.

It's prime. If you subtract the first digit from the second and turn it on its side, you get infinity. It's more than TWICE what you get from the sacred number of Tzeentch!

Most importantly, it gets us at least one more stretch goal beyond those that have already been released.

So let's get another 19 likes for darakhul, and tell all our friends about the Advanced Races Compendium! No other book in Pathfinder lets you play ghoul or minotaur PCs at level 1!

Liberty's Edge

I just wish there was some way to play a sahuagin ...

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

Man..you are right about that Marc. We need to make sure the book has some old school in it and those would be a fine addition!

Somebody take the plunge and back a sahuagin chapter!

Liberty's Edge

Add on list unveiled today, including limited editions of Deep Magic, New Paths Compendium, and art prints of the awesome cover and interior art!

Absolutely! In fact, (and this is just wild speculation of course ...) I'll bet a sahuagin chapter might have stuff like:

'Battle is the song of a thousand cries
Let yours sound loudest
Your beating heart the most sought after prize
To give it, the most sacred gift'

-------------

'Blinding light and flowing dark,
Life, death, strength, weakness, blood and stone
From the Time of the Seven Caves, to the Time of the End
and all is for us!'

-------------

'No one comes to this world to stay
Not stone, not gods, not bone or sea
Yet blood is eternal,
Soul and forever, flowing like fire in the deep.'

— from the sahuagin cal’mecac ("sayings of the old")

This is print version of Halls? Will it be available after the kickstarter through regular purchase?

As there is a b/w version and color version I'm guessing yes it's a print version. Not spelled out explicitly, neither if it is a softcover or hardcover and also unclear if you get a PDF too.

I bet they're kickstarter exclusive. You could back it for $ 40 though and choose no reward and the full color Halls of the Mountain King addon at the end. (Will perhaps incur some postage cost extra)

Backed! :)

It's a Kickstarter exclusive, though we might bring some along to PaizoCon or put a few on the Kobold Press store if the Kickstarter backers do not grab them all.

Just when I thought I couldn't possibly have reason to raise my pledge, along comes the add-ons with updates to a project from before my time as a patron.

Liberty's Edge

Less than $400 until we hit $30,000, which is a big goal to hit:

- it adds Hero Lab file add-ons
- it adds yet another chapter to the book: chapter 17, Trollkin

Plus it should reveal yet more stretch goals, including (hopefully) some of the very cool and 'unexpected' stretch goals Wolfgang mentions in the interview mentioned above!

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

And happy to announce that Owen K.C. Stephens will be writing a chunk of the book!

Also: We're just $250 away from the Trollkin chapter and the Hero Lab files.

Very cool (on all counts)!

Any chance your happy to announce "more Midgard content than just sidebars"? :)

Trollkin added/funding reached. Interest rising. Already a backer, but still...

Can you clarify this Wolfgang? Is this a proposed stretch goal?

Any chance you could just tell us the important bits?

Gaah. Between the Facebook competition I'm not interested in and the audio I don't want to listen to I get the feeling this KS is really struggling to reach me. Look, I get that social media is a valuable marketing tool, but personally I get my KS info HERE and a little from the actual KS page.

So if you could... I'd really appreciate it. That way you reach those folk who are interested in the FB and audio interview style AND folks who just want simple thread-based updates.

$30k reached! Woo hoo! I really want that dhampir chapter! My biggest fear is that the stretch goal teases are coming too slow with the compressed 20-day kickstarter.

Oh, and add more Midgard seasoning!

Have no fear - more stretch goals will indeed be revealed .... but each at precisely the right time.

They're kind of like wizards in that way ...

Quite apart from my unanswered questions above, precisely what is the point of holding off on pertinent information? The project is well funded - go for broke.

You either have things lined up or you haven't. Being coy isn't going to garner any more backers or raise interest. You raise interest by explaining things, not teasing your prospective customers.

I know I know, OSW is being terse and asking questions no-one else seems to be bothered about. But I'll be damned if I have to consider any more esoteric and buggy marketing strategies. Hyperbole has replaced authenticity, and it's really starting to give me the @#ts. I've studied marketing, have the Kotler et al textbook. Big deal. It's rubbish.

And before anyone gets all high-dudgeon and gets offended, or feels their nose is out of joint or honor is being impugned, that's not my intent. I just want straight talk. No marketing.

Would it work if I just grabbed supporter for 5$ and Halls? I'm not in monetary position for the whole kickstarter (also not that interested in a crunch book).

This is pretty modest, marketing-wise. There must be some third-party companies that totally drive you crazy. :)

Okay, I feel like I have to ask before backing:
how much of this is expected to be open gaming content?

Currently, most of my face-to-face play is 3.5. I can (and do) convert pathfinder content to 3.5, but pathfinder races tend to be substantially more powerful than their 3.5 counterparts.

On the flip side, most of my playing online is pathfinder, and for online games it is usually helpful if everyone can get access to a particular rules source, which in turn is most likely if the rules can be put in an srd. Hence, more of the rules being OGC would make this project more useful to me, and that's the criterion I use to decide whether to back.

I'm guessing most of the rules will be open, since I already have the first eight Advanced Races PDFs, which all say

Quote:

Open Game Content: The Open content in this publication includes the new feats, new spells, new magic items, new

gear, and new player character race abilities. All other material is Product Identity, especially place names, character names,
locations, story elements, and fiction. No other portion of this work may be reproduced in any form without permission.

but I remember not all of Deep Magic was open, so I'm asking now.

There's definitly been a large quantity of coyness in PF advertisement of non-Paizo products...remember Secret Plan X?

It bothers some people more than others. Apparently it works, since it keeps happening.

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Maybe I'm too close to it, but I'm not seeing a lot of coyness in the Advanced Races Compendium. The races included are spelled out, the goals are spelled out, we've done a ton of art previews. As announced on the Kickstarter project page, Owen KC Stephens is writing the Kitsune appendix, which was sponsored by an Appendix Patron. Victoria Jackzo will write the Dhampir chapter (not yet funded).

FWIW, I tend to provide project information on the project page first, then social media and forums later. The latest update on the project page is here.

137Ben, as you said, the crunch on these races is all Open Content, with the possible exception of some regional traits that are drawn from particular Midgard locales (I think centaurs and maybe tiefling had some? Not sure). The setting material is closed.

Looks like the art goal is going well. Looking forward to getting backer input for those.

I see no reason why pledging $ 25(for b/w) or $ 40 (for color) with the "no reward" pledge level and a HotMK addon should not work.

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Yep, that should work! It's a little odd to back a Kickstarter just for an add-on, but absolutely.

I think the complaint derives from, "We have a lot of cool stretch goals, but we're going to reveal them piecemeal as we reach certain funding levels." I can't totally speak for OSW, but I think he'd like to know all the stretch goals up front.

Next Goal reached - more awesome art goes into the book AND backers get to have input into said art :)

Next up on the stretch goal docket ... chapter 18: Drow and chapter 19: Dhampir!

It's not really odd considering the adventure is Kickstarter-only while Advanced Races will be available in the future. I'm gonna do that then. Do I need to add for international shipping (and how much)?

OSW—I apologize your question went unanswered as long as it did. I imagine that some folks assumed I'd dive in here, since I generally jump in manically and answer, particularly about marketing and crunch design. I had a rough day in the day job yesterday, so I didn't se your posts until this morning.

So..the podcast was a lot of fun, and it was a great honor to hang out with a long-time icon (and my reluctant mentor) Wolfgang, as well as meeting James.

Our part of the podcast starts at about 28 minutes (give or take a couple) and includes the following thoughts from Wolfgang and myself:

—In an environment chock full or rules and options, the Advanced Races Compendium is still important and unique. No other publication gives the depth of options for these previously ignored races. Where else can you find rules for a gnoll sycophant or drow arcanist?

—The books are fairly evenly divided between fluff and crunch, with a lot of great history and culture as background material, and information specific to Midgard to fit the races in properly.

—The book is useful for any campaign, whether for PCs or GMs. The material brings antagonists to life and helps describe the setting if you're visiting minotaurs or gnolls or whatnot. obviously for PCs or key NPCs, the rules options give a lot of race-specific flavor.

—I know some of it has been released by not, but two Paizo staffers (Owen and Stephen) are doing chapters and 2014 RPG Superstar Victoria Jaczko is doing the dhampir chapter.

—James asked about our personal favorites among all featured races for theme and crunch. I said thematically I love the darakhul theme (I paused awkwardly here because I kept thinking about how cool an un-announced stretch goal race is, but couldn't say anything) because I love crafty undead (and hello, "Famine"), and my favoritete book in terms of crunch was the lizardfolk, mostly because of the archetypes. Wolfgang said kobold over and over until the interview ended. Actually, he said aside from kobolds and darakhul, he really liked gearforged, who have been evolving since before Pathfinder came on the scene.

—A few other fun details: the Four Horsemen finished their Southlands responsibilities along with the other designers and the Southlands book is off to print! Also, I am designing the crunch for a cool resource for part of the Midgard setting: the Grand Duchy of Dornig.

I hope that helps highlights the podcast. It was a lot of fun. I'm actually doing the Gamer to Gamer podcast with James this weekend, and it should be out during or just after PaizoCon. We'll specifically talk about cool things coming from the Four Horsemen.

C'mon folks, we need that Dhampir chapter!

Anyone?

Liberty's Edge

Hey there necromental

If it helps, Wolfgang answered a similar question recently in the comments section of the Kickstarter itself:

"International backers are better off waiting until the BackerKit survey goes out. Trying to figure out international shipping requires a fair bit of figuring."

Does that help?

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

The Halls of the Mountain King is not Kickstarter-only. It will also be available at PaizoCon and via the Kobold Press store.

Goblins in the Brewery is sold at conventions only, so ok, that one appearing on the Kickstarter is pretty much an exclusive.

And yeah, international shipping is a nightmare right now, and the rates are going to rise in about 2 weeks. Shipping is not fun as a buyer, and possibly even less fun as a publisher.

Is is possible to reveal what the five appendix races are so far? I see Owen KC Stephens is doing the Kitsune, and I think I remember seeing suli mentioned somewhere….

All I can say is that of the 5 appendix backers, 3 have expressed a preference. Those are:

Dragonkin (added into that chapter)
Kitsune (by Owen, as you pointed out)
Suli (designer TBD)

The other two are free-floating right now: I'll be happy to mention then when those backers choose the race they want covered.
