Hammer of Thunderbolts: Is it possible . . .

Rules Questions

I have a dwarf character who just got a Hammer of Thunderbolts. Is there a way for a medium-sized character to wield the artifact with one hand? He's a Magus (Spellsword Archetype), and I'd love to be able to continue to use the athame if possible!

That whole large weapon for it the warhammer is what's stifling me on this. How do medium players wield it without size penalties?

A barbarian with the titan mauler archetype can reduce (or remove) the penalty, but would still require 2 hands to wield it. They do get another ability to wield a 2 handed weapon in 1 hand with a penalty, but that only works on weapons that are appropriately sized for the barbarian (so Medium weapons for a dwarf).

I don't think there is anything else at all. Other than finding a way to make your dwarf a Large creature.

Permanency Enlarge Person is probably your best bet.

Or, you ask your GM for 3.5's Monkey Grip feat.

As the GM, just allow him to perform a "magic ritual" that reduces the size of the weapon from large to medium and reduces the damage from 2d6 to 1d8, like a normal medium warhammer.

Why did dwarves craft a Large-sized weapon? This has always seemed bizarre to me, unless the weapon also grants dwarves (and possibly all Medium-sized wielders) the ability to use it without penalty. It IS a special magical weapon, so if I was the GM, I would just let characters use it without penalty. But YMMV. :-)

EDIT:

Heck, it's an artifact! It should allow Mediums to wield, even if that isn't RAW.

Make it medium. Don't know if it would work on artifacts.

Presumably they made it for somebody else? It's pretty evidently based on Thor's Hammer, after all.

You use a Gauntlet of Ogre Power and a Girdle of Storm Giant Strength, obviously :).

But, in all seriousness, in every version of the game before Pathfinder, this is exactly what you did.

Effortless Lace?

I just looked at this magic item . . . unfortunately, according to the rules, it won't allow me to wield it one-handed, but instead wield it two-handed without size penalty. I was disappointed.

Plus, it appears effortless lace only works on slashing and piercing weapons, not bludgeoning. Something else I find absurd, personally.

Scarab Sages

There is the Resize Item spell, or if you can't cast it, it is available in ring form.

I personally think they meant it to be a two handed warhammer, not a Large warhammer, but either way, one handed looks out if you're not going to be large size.

Pretty sure that a magic ritual won't affect an artifact, either.

Wait, they still have Gauntlets of Ogre Power in PF?

I believe he was referring to the pre-Pathfinder versions of the hammer, which required you to be wearing both gauntlets of ogre power and a belt of giant strength (because Thor required both his gauntlets and belt to wield Mjolnir).

You also had to be 6' tall or taller, or else you couldn't even attempt it. My first DM had a PC that was a half-elf and was just tall enough to ride. Then he challenged me to DM a scenario for his level.

It included a red dragon that countered their Antimagic Shell with a Rod of Cancellation, and a gnome illusionist that managed to kill the character in question --- by successfully polymorphing him into a female half-elf so that he wouldn't be tall enough to use the Hammer. He passed the system shock, got quite angry, and dispelled himself... but failed THAT system shock, and died instantly. :)

Oh, Second Edition, the memories.

Thanks for all the responses and ideas, all! Greatly appreciated!

Magical Munster Boots of Making You Just Tall Enough To Be Large?

Thunderbolt is a word that never made any sense to me.

Get a animal companion. Take the feat animal soul and take the Spell animal growth with a arcana. It is a bit more expencive than enlarge person but it is worth it.
