Advice

So I'm making a gnome mammoth rider and i don't know what class or build i should go for before mammoth rider. My gm have given me promotion to use a ankylosaurus as a steed.

My first build idea was a Cavalier of the sword, lance build. But after reading
Path to Mammoth Rider
. I so that a lot of classes can become a mammoth rider. So now I don't know what Class i should put my first 9 levels in.

I want to focus on my ankylosaurus and still be able to do something when i cant bring it.

Any ideas?

Barbarian (Mounted Fury) / Cavalier (Beast Rider) :)
So when you don't have your mount you can still rage and SMASH (ok maybe "smash" if you go gnome^^)

How many levels in them would you recommend?

some Barbarian rage powers let your mount rage with you and profit from your other rage powers. This is really the ultimate mounted combat.

If Cavalier is more your thing, then go for Order of the Sword. It lets you add your mount's (enormous) strength to your damage (which is trippled die due to spirited charge)

But be aware, that huge mounts will have problems in dungeons. So it depends on your campaign.

I'm not certain why people never mention the Hunter in these discussions. Mammoth Rider is all about making your Mount as scary as possible and Hunter does that in droves.

At level 9 for Hunter you'll grab:

1) A pair of adaptable Animal Focus' for you and your mount.
2) The ability to give any Teamwork Feat you have to your mount.
3) Outflank and 3 additional Bonus Teamwork Feats
4) Level 3 Casting
5) The ability of your Mount to take numerous Skirmisher Tricks ala' Ranger.
6) Be the only class with the ability to grab Pack Flanking for perma' Flanking without jumping through Magic Item hoops.

Of course a point to remember is that as a Hunter/Ranger/Druid you have access to the Reduce Animal spell to bring your Huge Mount down to a more manageable size.

You could go with a nature Oracle, using the mount revelation. It goes well with your Charisma bonus, and you can focus on buffing your mount to do the fighting for you. By the time you actually take Mammoth Rider levels, you can be dropping divine power on your mount for +3 attack and damage (or +4 if your ankylosaurus picks up Fate's Favored via Additional Traits), plus an extra attack and some temporary hp. Not to mention buffs like barkskin, defending bone, or bull's strength.

I will differently look in to the hunter thing. I haven't really looked at that class. How do Skirmisher Tricks work on a animal companion. the ability say that you can take them. But not how many times your animal can use them or have that added something new?

I don't think i'm interested in a build.

I think i know how to build a cavalier with order of the sword.

So any thing I should know about a hunter build?

looks like 8 levels hunter one level cavalier, beast rider, Gendarme. Should I look for any other Archetypes for one of the classes?

If you are going to do barbarian/cavalier/mammoth rider (which is a great build I've done before) then you want at least 5 levels of cavalier so you can qualify for Horse Master feat. This gives you a full progression animal companion if you split levels into something that doesn't have one (like barbarian).

There is an ability which I can't recall the name of that allows you to add your mount strength modifier to your damage roll. Combine it with the standard lance charge build and you have a combination that will face roll pretty much anything in a single hit (while using Spirited Charge).

From barbarian levels you can get feats that allow your mount to rage and benefit from all the same bonuses you do (further doubling up on the strength bonus to damage).

To add your mount strength modifier to your damage roll. you need to have 8 levels of cavalier order of the sword.

My favorite mammoth rider build is pure mounted fury barb. Boon companion to get it to your level, beast totem line along with the mounted rage powers gives any mount pounce and claws, plus the massive str bonuses. Why hello there huge gore/slam/claw/claw (plus the rider's lance) mammoth charge.

(Can't remember if I got the natural attacks right, but the point remains) I am always hesitant to use any caster class because the mammoth rider doesn't get the bonus to saves vs divine or arcane if you cast that type.
