I tend to agree that Iron Man (prior to the movies and Robert Downey Jr. of course) was less well known outside the comic fan base.

I'd say the most widely recognizable characters prior to the movies were *definitely* Spider Man at the top of the list ... and then probably characters like the Hulk, Fantastic Four, maybe Captain America and the X-Men.

But Spider Man is absolutely the most widely know character to the general public (at least, he was before the popularity of the MCU movies)

Sovereign Court

Spider man is not nearly on the level of the DC's trinity. Not even close.

not talking about comics, but rather how many people who don't read comics actually know anything about those characters/

I mean I am nerdy, but was never into comics. I recognized Iron Man by name, but mostly from that AC/DC song, and assumed he was a robot.I vaguely knew what Cap looked like, but mostly from that really bad 90's movie with the geriatric Red Skull.

There's an old podcast interview with Matt Fraction who was the Iron Man writer right around the time of the first movie where he says he told his mom that he was writing Iron Man and he says that before the movie she thought Iron Man was a robot.

Iron Man was not as well known before the movies. Maybe in comic book circles but to the masses? No. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are all better known because of their previous exposure in media. Batman had a popular 60's TV series, Superman has had a wonderful animated series (the Fleischer series) and a live action series. Wonder Woman had a fairly popular TV series in the 70's. And all three of them appeared in the Super-Friends series on saturday morning. Superman also had a successful movie in the late 70's and early 80's. Batman had a successful movie in the late 80's.

So it's entirely fair that more people know the DC characters than the Marvel ones. The only Marvel character to have a successful anything was The Hulk TV series in the 70's. I mean I remember Reb Brown as Captain America but that's like me and three other people. And I'm still trying to forget that awful Spider-Man show with Nicholas Hammond.

It's a black Sabbath song but that's beside the point.

It's a generational identification, I think. As a stereotypical 90s kid, marvels most identifiable characters were unequivocally Spider-Man and the X-Men. This is almost purely due to the weekly awesome cartoons of both. Every boy I knew watched them. We collected xmen and Spider-Man trading cards. I even bought a few spider man comics even though i had 0 comic interest.

There were half a dozen 16bit era spider man games and as many xmen games. Yeah we may have seen hulk Thor or iron man as a cameo, but that's all they were was secondary.

The late 90s came and gave us the before mcu movies. Then Ang Lee's hulk put him into the forefront again. And we had the raimi spidey films. And the singer x trilogy.

For me and my ilk, it's only spider man and the X-Men. Cap and iron man and hulk popularities are all products of the recent films.

During that same time though, dc kept pumping Batman thru the movies and superman in video games.

Not to derail, but what AC/DC song is that? They did the soundtrack to Iron Man 2.

I know Black Sabbath has song entitled Iron Man that was in Iron Man 1.

Doh! Ninja'ed by archmagi1.

Yeah, all I knew about Iron Man going into the movie was that he was an alcoholic with a power suit.

Marvel's done a really good job with taking characters who fall firmly into "who the Hell is that?" territory (if one doesn't read comics) and making good and profitable movies with them.

As another 90s kid who didn't really read comics, I will totally agree. X-Men were huge, Spider Man was less for me but I knew people into him. Batman was amazing. Cartoon exposure was everything, and those were the big 3.

As a kid in the 80's Spider Man was huge because of Spider Man and his Amazing Friends. I was a teenager when Batman and X-Men cartoons were out in the 90's. They were great, but Spider-Man and Hulk (from the live-action show) were my two most known.

That's true. He's WELL above Wonder Woman.

There are three superheroes that are so ingrained in popular culture that most people know their origin stories just through sheer osmosis, without having ever read a comic book or watched a movie about them.

Superman. Batman. Spider-Man.

There are literally people who have no interest in comics or comic book characters whatsoever that can give you pretty accurate accounting of those three origin stories.

I remember seeing a few episodes. It didn't look all that great. On the other hand, the Iron Man movies DID, in my opinion. The Iron Man cartoon wasn't nearly as successful - nor, in my opinion, nearly as good - as the Hulk and X-Men cartoons of the time. I didn't see much of the Spider-Man cartoon, but I understand that was successful as well.

I think it's hilarious that people are using Iron Man to make that point, when Marvel has made a very successful Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and a Peabody Award winning series about Jessica Jones.

Iron Man might be B-list, but the Guardians of the Galaxy are Y-list. And Jessica Jones is Z-list.

Well then, Spider-Man would beat the hell out of Batman unless you give him plot armor. Spider-man is faster, stronger, and more agile, and can't be surprised unless you are wearing a symboite. He also doesn't have a kryptonie to exploit.

I might be the only person I know who was not a fan of either the 90's X-Men or Spider-Man cartoons. That animation for both of those shows were pretty much unwatchable to me. To add insult to injury the Japanese opening to the X-men cartoon was AMAZING and then promptly shifted back to the crap animation.

You are not, Hrothdane, though I admit that I only know it from more modern times, instead of back in the day.

The problem with the Iron Man cartoon is that there were two shows, that were very, very different from each other, both of which pretended they were the same show with two different seasons.

Season one was crap.

It was hokey, goofy, and Iron Man was a Gary Stu figure to an insufferable degree whom everyone revered and/or pined over with the series finale being the two females of the show flanking him and giving his (metallic, and thus probably cold and uncomfortable) mask a kiss from either side, happily aware that he wasn't going to choose between them and eager for him.

Season two was actually pretty decent, though I feel they went a little too far in the opposite direction... especially since it was supposed to be a sequel to the one that had just finished.

In it, Iron Man was a tortured, hated outcast whom no one liked and suffered from various emotional traumas, having to win over his friends for a disagreement that, from what I could tell, was less than some disagreements they'd had in several of the episodes of the first season. The people around him kind of seemed to hate him for "lying" to them... by not actually having changed his stance from what he'd literally said to their faces... in the previous series season.

Other than that bit of oddity (and a new dark grittiness thing), it was pretty okay.

The animation was so much better than so many other cartoons (I didn't have access to anime at the time), that I really didn't care. And later on, I was... invested.

The difference between the opening and show was kind of painful, however.

That said, I didn't watch Spiderman nearly as much as X-Men. Probably because I'd gotten a few free Pizza Hut VHS Tapes of X-Men, got into them, and lived in Lithuania watching and enjoying those.

But Batman and Gargoyles are the absolute best of their eras. THE BEST. (The rest of the DCAU is also really good, in general.)

Sadly, I was just a little too old to realize how amazing Gargoyles was.

He did indeed!!!

In fact, that's one of the things that helped me learn to read as a little kid. Remember, Spider Man never spoke out loud on the Electric Company - everything he said was shown in a cartoon talk bubble ... you had to read it to know what he was saying. My mom would sit with me while I watched and read what Spidey said. Slowly but surely, she'd start having me try to read them myself, which I would grudgingly do because I so badly wanted to know what he was saying.

So, Spider Man helped me learn to read when I was a little kid :)

Spider-Man inspired me to be an engineer... (or physicist, but I ultimately chose engineering since I like finding practical applications for theoretical knowledge).

At this point, they might as well just make it fully canon that Batman DOES have a superpower, and that superpower is the fact that he's wearing plot armor that makes Ser Robert Strong's armor look like wet torn tissue paper.

Then they went the other extreme on the 90s cartoon. THey had to have a voiceover for EVERYTHING. If Spider-Man flipped a switch, fully on-screen, that show had a voiceover first that said "I need to flip this switch".

:P

I was not a fan of the Spidey or X-Men cartoons of that period.

If I had to rank the Superheroes in comics on how "A-List" they are I'd probably list them in the following order (taken as told me by "super authoritative" sources I'll state below...okay...maybe not super authoritative...but one of the few sources I have in this regard...so not really all that reliable...maybe anecdotal only...)

A List in order

Superman
Batman
Spiderman
Captain America
Wonder Woman
Robin (yeah...that's right...Robin)
The Hulk
Iron Man
The Joker
Lex Luther (wait...those last two are villains)

And...yeah...that's about it...No, Wolverine doesn't even get on this list. If it weren't for the X-men cartoons and the movies...no one outside of comic books would even know he existed...

B List

Green Lantern
The Flash
Aquaman

and then you have teams of which no one really knows who is on it or not, but only that the team exists...like

Justice League
Avengers
X-men

the Legion of Dooooooooom!

And beyond that...everyone else on the C list

Like

Green Arrow
Wolverine
Plastic Man

Etc.

Sources...My spouse who doesn't read any comics and doesn't watch the movies and knows nothing about super heroes...and my step cousin who knows something about Superheroes (B list comes from her) but doesn't really watch the shows or know much about the movies (though BvS had nice colors...sometimes...but they were too angry all the time).

Yes, my spouse was a little confused about what exactly a superhero is...hence Lex Luthor and the Joker being on the A-list.

Meh. As long as they keep the grim and humorless mandate in place, it isn't going to matter who they bring on as executive producer, director, etc.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The dark tone isn't necessarily what's bad... There are plenty of good movies with darker tones.

The problem is that they make every. single. movie. dark, even the franchises that don't match tone.

That and their movies just haven't been very good... Man of Steel is pretty weak, mediocre at best... And BvS is just a mess. Not a horrible film... But pretty bad. It's no wonder its audience score has steadily fallen lower and lower... After the initial wave of fanboy-fueled reviews, the less fanatical viewers are sharing their opinions.

So, industry rags are reporting that a Booster Gold movie is in the works, with Zack Stentz writing and Greg Berlanti rumored to be directing.

I think it's helped by the fact WB listened to people's concern about the movie's tone and stuff.

It could be fun. They have Cyborg in it...I'm in to at least give it a chance.

They need to have Robin and Starfire in it as well though, just to mix up enough of the Teen Titan feel with Justice league, that is if they are including Cyborg like it appears they are.

The last robin is dead.

I think the inclusion of Cyborg is more about getting a more racially diverse cast involved for DC's major team group. IE Justice League.

Not so much hooking into Teen Titans, which I have a feeling will be more likely a TV show.
