Seems the site is getting hit by an impressive amount of spam.

General Discussion was taking heavy fire, and was completely overrun

PACG forums were also receiving a steady burst...

I'm flagging them and moving on like I've been told, but....

THEY'RE ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!!

OK, looks like the Korea-bot is back.

Paizo, what did you do to make 'Dear Leader' this mad?

The SACG has fallen. I repeat the Society Adventure Card Guild has fallen.

I just flagged a spammer.

It is a shame that we can't see some legal action.

I was wondering what all that gibberish was... Why do you attack a website for nerdy people to talk make believe? Seriously.

Fellow Hellknights, we must fight on... we cannot lose the day...

Dear god. The spam... its everywhere.

The worst part is doing it in a language almost no one here can read. I only knew it was Korean because someone recognized it as such yesterday.

Seriously spam-bot, at least spam in a language your (supposed) target audience can understand!

It's breaking through our ranks... it has yet to stop. My Hellknights and I will hold off to the last person to hold off this threat, but... we are not sure how long we will last against such a menace.

Ah you young whippersnappers! Back in my day, we has spam flowing through ports uphill both ways. Little packets explodin' into voodoo love potion offers, fake ID and currency offers, netherworld based ghosty hit man revenge offers, dread pirate video offers ... Them threads were crawling with the stuff!

Holy hells! I jist scanned down and we're being invaded by gibberish! Dang spammer kids these days don't even know how to hook an audience. Ain't like the old days, when spammers took pride in their work ... well, not pride, but dang it you knew what they was train' to sell you. Spammers these days got no respect.

But order has since ensued... we must not fall to the chaos! flags four more threads They just keep coming. Where is a wizard when you need one?

You martials never learn. You can't beat a swarm with a melee attack. Single target spam reports will never work. We need a wizard in here. Paizo!!!!!!!!!

I packed a swarmbane clasp... but it just has too many hitpoints. It must be... at least a CR 29 swarm... with construct immunities.

I think the Swarm might also have a small hint of intelligence as it seems to be trying to assume various humanoid identities with the names chosen. Small but there.

Aha!

After a comment by another poster, I also fed one of these posts and one of the titles into Google Translate (yea, I know, but it's free).

Apparently our Korean spam-bot swarm is confused by the word game and is plugging on-line casinos and gambling games.

Hey, spam-bot - wrong game. Seriously. Way wrong.

I need to import a genocide scroll over from Rogue and genocide the spam.

I managed to clear about 4 subforums. General Discussion is... messy. But working on it.

Is there a point in us continuing to flag them? Or is it just a waste, with you killing them as fast as you find them anyway?

I'm bringing as many alchemist bombs as I can to flag the spam down. Gods above, it's worse than those acid beetles in The Whispering Cairn and vescavor swarms in Sword of Valour put together...

Also, we're apparently being spammed by Gwendolyn.

Dammit, is there a sinner on our boards?! The Blades of the Darkmoon have come!

I was particularly surprised by the Ent alias. However, that seems to have been a fluke.

They're in the adventure card game discussion as well! Those poor cards might be covered in swarm waste filth now! Lightning or Ice? Fire shall burn the poor cards.

Is... is it still helpful to do that?

I'd be all over it, but I don't want to be a pain to the Admins...

I recall it being more helpful than linking to the offending posts in this forum, last time this came up. No idea if we're just clogging the admin system up or not.

Are they all coming from the same IP address? Can this/these pieces of cow dung be blocked or something?

This really does make implementing something to verify an actual human being is creating a new account seem pretty important

Kind of makes me want a community mod system, where if X number of people flag it (or X without any favorites or X more than favorite or some variation) it gets autohidden.

Probably creates to much work to avoid good posts getting hidden, but it would certainly help with the spam flood days.

We're taking care of it. Please don't continue to make threads or posts in response to the spam. Flags work just fine.

EDIT: I'll open this back up and respond more thoroughly once we got a hold of the current barrage of posts.

So, just to give an update: we've gotten rid of all of the spammers as of last night/this morning. I'm talking to our tech team to formulate a more effective means of handling this kind of activity on paizo.com in the future, but we may not see tools for some time given their workload.

We absolutely appreciate you all bringing this kind of stuff to our attention! The flagging system is really the most effective way of notification for these guys, and extra threads/posts saying "more spam!" can sorta end up also acting like spam. We also ask that you don't respond to their posts directly, as it does add to the time we spend cleaning the threads up.

That's a good bit of advice right there. I actually didn't know this and will be careful in the future. Hellknights, I expect you all to do the same.

It is a shame that something won't be in place for a while, but it is understandable. The community can simply help out and flag the dastards clogging up the system in the mean time.

One my own sites, I've found that the most effective method is asking a specific question (i.e. What company publishes Pathfinder?) on the registration form (mine are site/community specific) keeps out spambots. I initially used captcha, which had no effect. D:

Zova Lex wrote:

This is actually one reason why I think these threads can be helpful, as it seems someone always learns something that I kind of thought was already generally known (which, obviously, it was not), though I entirely understand if they're annoying to the mods, due to being redundant/about something you already know about and are trying to fix.

(They're cathartic for me as a poster as well - knowing it's not just me - but I can understand why that might be cold comfort to you guys.) :)

And now what I was unable to post due to hitting the "submit" button after what must have been literal seconds after Chris locked the thread (I didn't see the post until later, and even then it took me a bit to realize the thread was locked).

That's my one hesitation, but that's also why I'm doing this.

UPDATE NOTE: Apparently, however, it's a good thing! Hesitations: GONE! :D

I kind of thought they already did? Some kind of Captcha system or something? That said, having been a part of numerous other forums, it doesn't necessarily help.

While this sounds like a great idea... from experience, it's just begging to be abused.

(It really would help with SPAM flooding, however.)

What I've been doing (and Admins/Mods let me know if this is wrong) is clicking on a thread, going to the OP's page, then going down their post history clicking all of them as "Breaks Other Guidelines" (except for a few where I've clicked the wrong thing and only realized it too late - though I maintain that "Double Post" is pretty funny and apt, as is "Offensive/.../Abusive"), and then hiding the threads started by that poster so I don't keep revisiting the same guy over and over again.
