Scarab Sages

There are also 2 in the Pathfinder RPG general discussion thread from almost a half hour ago that I flagged, in addition to the insane amount in the Paizo General Discussion

I flagged quite a few there as well

Scarab Sages

It looks cleaned up now. Fast work

[Edit] At least they are getting cleaned up shortly after posting.

Brother Maynard: Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty-one.

Cleric: [reading] And Saint Attila raised the Ban Hammer up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy Ban Hammer, that with it thou mayst smash thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats and large chu...

Brother Maynard: Skip a bit, Brother...

Cleric: And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou lift thy Holy Ban Hammer. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then swingest thou thy Holy Ban Hammer of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Brother Maynard: Amen.

^Nice . . . but we need AoE.

The spam is coming from inside the threads.

Specifically the Legendary Planet kickstarter threads.

IT'S IN THE ROOM! Game over man, game OVER! I ain't even going home in a body bag!

Liberty's Edge

They are here. Mostly in Paizo General Discussion and also in the Legendary Planet KS thread :-(

The latter is from the http://paizo.com/people/jameshoong1 non-person.

I swear, nothing is sacred anymore. That makes me sad.

Good thing to have a fanbase and forum community spread all over the timezones I guess ;-)

Liberty's Edge

They are also in the http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2si3m?Input-for-the-Designers#40 thread.

One http://paizo.com/people/iohip non-person.

Flagging as I type.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm. New one with chinese characters this time : http://paizo.com/people/looktoyou1 non-person in the http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2rn8q&page=95?General-Discussion-Kineticist #4721 thread.

Liberty's Edge

The http://paizo.com/people/jameshoong1 non-person has diverted its attention to the http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2rxfh&page=4?ThirdParty-Publishers-Freelanc er-Open-Call#168 thread :-(

They keep on changing their behaviour it seems.

Create bots which remove any post on the boards with korean text?

Spam keeps coming, what about calling the servants of Abadar?

"keeps flagging"

Does Canada know about this???

I just logged on to have a look, there are over 700 spam posts in General discussion in the last 5 hrs.

What have we poor gamers done to deserve this?

OK, so, woke up this morning, checked the boards, flagged & hid for about an hour. Now I'm taking a break for breakfast, then...I'll be back!

Oh, and Alex, take comfort in this: it's all a waste on their part: they're trying to up their Google hit count on legit sites for the various websites they're posting, however...according to out hardworking It/mods, Paizo blocks Google's count-bot for just that purpose.

No matter how much they fill and contaminate our boards, they get nothing out of it.

Do they know that though?

Y'know, I'm not sure that that doesn't make it worse, that its just getting in our way for no purpose.

Back to Flagging.

I'm not sure we even have a means of contacting the spammers to let them know it's a waste of time...

Petty revenge suggestion:

Whenever a post is deleted by the mods under "Breaks other guidelines", an automated email informs the poster that it has happened.

Couple of hundred "your post has been deleted" emails in their inbox might make them think twice.

On a more realistic note, yes, since the forum rules prohibit posting in languages other than English, auto-deleting posts with non-English characters might be worth the tech team's time.

Can´t you just block korean IP´s?
That new spamwave is korean and most probably comes from there, as there most probably arent many Pathfinder Players (yet).

They're probably routed through bot-nets.

It's petty, but I take some solace in the fact that they're spending money to waste their time.

I've been flagging, and saying 'Breaks Other Guidelines'. Is that correct? Or am I doing something incorrectly?

Yep, 'Breaks Other Guidelines' is correct.

Although, after the first 100 or so...you start wanting 'string of curse words they can actually see'.

OMG....

I'd just been flagging/hiding the first page in General Discussion, and I kept getting older ones, so I checked: 7 1/2 pages going back almost 8 hours!

:::cries:::

Back to wanting to nuke them from orbit. They're WORSE that telemarketers!

Actually would be not a bad idea, except for the problem that they probably used throw-away e-mail addresses(*) for this purpose, so they won't even notice the messages of which you speak.

(*)Or worse yet, stolen/hacked e-mail addresses

No, don't do that -- you'll hose half of the PbP threads, which very commonly use non-English (actually non-Roman) characters to represent speech or writing in exotic languages.

They're probably routed through bot-nets.

Not only that, but that would be one of the surest ways to ensure that you lose whatever Korean players you have and never get any more.

Flagged 50 of the buggers in just under 30 minutes, by all the gods on high, they are using spam wave attacks! Quick someone break out the 50 cal ma' due's of spam bane and set up fields of overlapping fire!

UnArcaneElection wrote:

What about just banning them from the titles of threads?

^They don't actually need non-Roman characters in thread titles, since they have already started spamming existing threads that have Roman character titles, so this would just make a very brief one-time hiccup in their spamming.

Looks like the latest wave has been pushed back, but general discussion thread took a serious beating.

One has infiltrated forum games.

Happy smacking the hammer.

The buggers are clever, I will give them that, but they cannot stand against the might of Paizo IT!

"Once more unto the breach, for glory and honour!"

Still a few left but it's starting to clear.

BTW, I'll be on leave from the spamwar starting tomorrow due to an overnight family vacation.

See you all Friday!

They are using a botnet, it rotates IPs from all over the world on a regular schedule. That was their first adaptation.

Well, a small number of them are using an international botnet. Most of them use an asian botnet.

Have we tried asking them nicely to stop?

Liberty's Edge

They are back in Paizo General Discussion.

They sabotaged Occult Adventures first..and were counting down!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yep. Flagged them with extreme prejudice.

Don't know if they were offering counterfeit diplomas from the universities they were putting in their spam... but it would explain much about their intelligence if they were.

I am seeing this happen and it makes me bummed that Paizo is getting targeted so heavily like this. I wish there was more we could do to help them.

I dont know how useful the community flagging is (or how long we'll need to keep it up).

If it's something we're going to need to do long term, it would be a nice feature if the posts we'd already flagged could be 'greyed out' or something. I generally just watch the sidebar and it's not too hard to keep on top of them as they come in. Nonetheless, there are times I open a post to flag it and realise I've already been there.

I doubt it's worth putting lots of effort into, but if it's easy...

At least this one keeps his cell phone on Silent.
