It is fun, but after you've flagged a few hundred over the weeks you start to wish there was a different game to play on the messageboards. :-P

Still, some of them can still surprise you.

I just saw one with a short poem in English about Korea and the Moon.

OK, OK, so there was ONE good thing about all of this: it just started pouring here, and I remembered I hadn't closed the moon window. Now I'm soaked, but the car isn't.

They're all over the place again, even Website Feedback! Flag at will!!!

Can Paizo put a "no robots" tag onto messageboards so Google et al won't index them? That would remove motive for spammers to post, right?

Silver Crusade Contributor

Wouldn't it also mean that Google searches wouldn't "see" the useful content on the messageboards?

Yep, would make it useless for the rest of us. A few more bites on these guys and I have to hit the hay.

Am i the only one getting REALLY ANNOYED with all these Korean Spam threads?

Need to find a way to weed these out..n

so, what's the correct flag? 'breaks other guideline'?

Yep.

Remember, Spam is really bad for you.

PIXIE DUST wrote:

No.

Flag them with 'breaks other guideline'. the team can then easier target them.

Autohide any threads with names that contain Asian symbols(so that nobody other than the spammer can see them)?

It's a bit of a brute force approach and is easy to get around, but it should give us some peace and quiet for a while.

These ones aren't even fun to read like good ol' black magic babaji.

Sidenote: Is that alias's name too "close to the mark"? I can change it if it's actually giving mods trouble.

If I tried to do all the flagging that I should be doing from my phone (I need to get a new computer), I would quickly go over my data plan limit.

At least your phone can still access the forums...

:(

Like it's been said: flag 'em 'breaks other guidelines', hide 'em to tell who you've already hit, and move on.

We seem to be at war, and need as many recruits as possible.

Gaaahhh...

Do these spammers (bots or real folk) have any idea how much they are HATED?

BTW, there seem to be several 'groups' based on screen names, not links: slam the keyboard for a name, make an 'almost' name, and the 'I know English names, see!' group.

I've been stealing the 'almost' names for monster names.

Back to flagging duty.

I can only imagine what this is going to be like during GenCon.

Set-the-boards-on-fire apocalyptic, most likely.

All hands on deck we have spam.....I repeat we have spam. Full wartime use of AoE's approved....Melee builds get your rings of evasion at the door on your way into the field.

I wake up and boot my computer, and what do I see? Nearly every post on the side is spam. This is bad, folks, this is bad.

Flagging as-is takes a goodly amount of time when there are as many of them as there have been the past several days. It's easier to hide them when there are that many of them.

Silver Crusade Contributor

I might have to tap out until the mods are online...

Laid eyes upon spam threads, disintegrated same.

We shall go on to the end. We shall fight spam in Product Discussion, we shall fight spam in Paizo General Discussion, we shall fight spam with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our message board, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight spam on the beaches, we shall fight spam on the landing grounds, we shall fight spam in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight spam in the hills; we shall never surrender.

Stares at the carnage in General discussion; cries, then hears Slim's pep talk and heads back into battle.

Are they prolific enough that a one-click "flag as spam thread" link, like the hide link, is warranted?

Do you know how many people would click that whenever they see a new thread on a topic they don't like?

Yeah that would be bad. "Oh look another thread about x well I don't think we need that on here "

I have to admit, I admire those that can take a more cheerful, humorous approach to this. For me, seeing the crushing amount of spam on the forums for the majority of each day (the obvious exception being the 8 or so hours each week day when the moderators are working) is getting depressing, discouraging, frustrating and, frankly, disheartening for me personally.

I LOVE this site and these forums, but seeing the huge (and, it seems, increasing) amount of this spam garbage in more and more forums is making it harder and harder for me to even want to come to the forums anymore. It really sucks that these #*&%!$ spammers can just crap all over a site and make it almost unusable :(

Coming to these forums has gone from what was once an extremely enjoyable way to spend some time ... to a real slog because of the spam.

And yet, it seems like there is little that can be done, either to stop it OR to go after them and prosecute the spammers in some meaningful way. They just get to do it and we just have to just sit here and take it.

Sorry, it's just becoming really depressing to see it happen ...

I honestly don't know enough about these things to offer a suggestion. But persevere we must.

I don't think Flagging is neccessary. I'm sure that Paizo is aware of these threads. The problem is the attackers are using very good code which allows them to create a multitude of accounts, because Paizo does not have any "Are You a Human" safeguards to prevent it. (Or if they are, they are not sufficient to the task.)

Dark Archive

this has been sitting there for a while now which makes me think the mods missed it. It needs more flags!

Merged the new spam thread in with the larger one.

As LazarX mentioned above, we're aware of these spam accounts, we're doing what we can, and you do not at all need to feel as though you must sit and flag posts for minutes/hours on end. Our staff is doing what we can with the tools that we have. The unfortunate truth is that these spammers are actually real people (not robots), and that makes our solutions to the problem a lot more limited.

Every time, thnx mods.

Just make sure the next crew has a good 8 hours of rest to prep more flamestrike spells.

Thanks to whomever is manning the fort tonight.

Stuff is vanishing even before I can get to flag it!

Very nice work.
