What is this creature?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi everybody,

What creature could be thought of as human at first, but then at some point gets permanent, non-magic Dark Vision (as if by racial trait, as it doesn't react to Detect Magic) and grows a tail?

Thanks! :D

What?

Tiefling perhaps? Though i admit this feels very vague.

"Looks human, has Darkvision and a tail" sounds like a Tiefling to me too.

If there's a possibility it was low light vision and not dark vision it might have been a kitsune

Thank you guys very much. :D

I realized I forgot to mention several things that may be relevant:

• This mysterious character's blood warms up — not sure if it goes as far as boiling, but I can tell it doesn't really damage him — whenever somebody's talking about him in suspicion. Could it be a master-made-up thing?

• His parents may or may not be the individuals he knows and was raised by. So Tiefling is a very likely hypothesis here.

• Sometimes he feels really good, sometimes he gets sick and vomits. It could be the slow mutation happening, but I have a feeling the good sensation had something to do with being around undead, even if only to slay them in combat.

• I looked it up and found something which I hadn't previously imagined possible. At some point, this character was safe indoors with his party around a campfire, when some serious Darkness occurred spontaneously. No one could see anything despite the campfire being right in front of them, except the character with Dark Vision. I didn't mention this because I didn't really believe it could be his doing — I considered the idea, but let it go quickly. Then, once I read your awesome replies and searched it, there it was. Turns out Tieflings can cast it as spell-like abilities once a day.

• A nightmare involving the Infernal word "Bezekira", which the master translated as "Fire Lion", but that may be a contextual clue due to the character's name. I've just searched it and it seems to be a beast called a Hellcat. But it can't cast Darkness, right? So this was just some Hellcat telepathically communicating? (On the other hand, there was the fiery blood thing going on...)

Could a Hellcat be born as a human and later mutate? I really think — and hope — it's actually a Tiefling instead...

Are you trying to invent something, or is this a preexisting thing you're trying to identify?

Trying to identify. It's all happening to my human-until-otherwise-proven character.

I know I shouldn't be getting information like this, bypassing what the master tells me, but my character has 20 Int and is a wizard with a lot of research material. The master himself told me that this character was wondering if his parents might have been lying to him all his life, after all these things started happening. He said a 20-Int person's head doesn't work like ours; it should be rushing with thoughts no one would think.

So since I'm a beginner at this and don't know the creatures and races etc., I thought I should go ahead and do a little pro-active researching, so that the character could come up with some valid theories that only a 20-Int nonhuman could think of. :)

It sounds like the character is being mutated into a Tiefling.

Tieflings can have prosthetic tails, can cast as a default option: Darkness 1/day. They have darkvision. One of the alternate racial options for Tiefling on the 100 options chart has SOMETHING to do with undead, but I forget what.

If your character is changing overtime, your GM may like the idea of Tieflings coming into their heritage around puberty, and now your character is undergoing fiendish mutation.

Oh, I didn't realize there really was something about undead. I just thought it was a minor coincidence. But yeah, you're totally right. There is an undead-related ability. I've just found this:

48 You are invisible to all unintelligent undead. This is a supernatural ability.

That d% thing way down below... That's the chart you're talking about, right?

Thank you for the insight! It really helped! :)
