Practical uses for Quarterstaff Master

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I've read a bit about it before, mostly that it's a bad feat since why would you ever want to wield (not hold) a quarterstaff in one hand?

So anybody know any good uses for Quarterstaff Master? Like maybe dual-wielding quarterstaffs? (Kidding obviously, though that does bring up a hilarious image)

Because you're a Staff Magus?

That's basically what the feat was designed for.

Having an entire archetype designed around a single feat seems...

Inadvisable?

*Shrug* Not the first, won't be the last.

The feat lets the Staff Magus use Spell Combat. It's a necessity for base functionality, and (for once) the writer of the Magus archetype realized that and gave it to them.

Why do they need it for Spell Combat? You can already release one hand from a two-handed weapon as a free action, do the spell biz, and then grab it again as another free action.

Spell Combat wrote:
At 1st level, a magus learns to cast spells and wield his weapons at the same time. This functions much like two-weapon fighting, but the off-hand weapon is a spell that is being cast. To use this ability, the magus must have one hand free (even if the spell being cast does not have somatic components), while wielding a light or one-handed melee weapon in the other hand.

Without Quarterstaff Master a quarterstaff is a two-handed melee weapon.

Aaaaaah, that's poop

Still seems like a bit excessive to make an entire feat rather than add in a single line to allow Maguses... Magi? A magus, to use Spell Combat with Quarterstaffs.

The entire point was to require them to have a free hand.
Allowing a magus to get 1.5 STR on a two-handed quarterstaff spellcombat, spellstrike is not what they wanted.

Seeing as Quarterstaff Master has a BAB +5 requirement, it's basically necessary for the archetype to get it.

It also allows a Staff Magus to get Weapon Specialization (quarterstaff) which they otherwise wouldn't qualify for.
