The 'Day Dreamer' Child - A Dreamspun Sorcerer Character

Is there anything wrong with this build?

Race: Human
Age: 12
Alignment: CG
Templates: Young, Dream Creature
Class: Sorcerer
Bloodline: Dreamspun
Ability Scores: Str 6, Dex 16, Con 6, Int 16, Wis 17, Cha 20 (25 PB)
Feats: Spell Focus (illusion), Greater Spell Focus (illusion)

One thing of note, base stat-wise, is that I worked towards a balance of stats over really boosting things as far as I could have: Str 10, Dex 12, Con 10, Int 16, Wis 13, Cha 16. Something that is nice, is that I could toss 2 points from Intelligence to bring Point Buy down to 20 and it wouldn't really hurt the concept.

What is this concept? It is that of a dreaming youth with the potential of becoming a master of illusions and is able to go about his days only partly awake and changing the waking world to that of dreams is really cool.

1. If the character is 16, he does not qualify for the young template any longer, since he is an adult in human years.

2. Are other templates allowed by your GM?

3. Unless you are an excellent caster player, expect to get one-shot for having 6 Con. Or to fail every Fortitude save.

1. Well in that case it will be 14
2. Since this was just an idea I cam up with, no DM involved... why do you ask?
3. I understand this, I considered boosting at least Con though there is consideration that the weaker Strength and Dexterity comes with using the Young template. That, and the fluff of the Dream character reinforces the idea of weak physicals since it comes about from the character being in a coma. Perhaps additional consideration can be made by the party to protect the character.

Alternate Stats
Str 9, Dex 16, Con 9, Int 14, Wis 16, Cha 20 (25 Pb)
Str 8, Dex 14, Con 9, Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 20 (20 Pb)

Actually, a Young Creature should be even younger than 14. Note that there are rules for Young characters. Young characters have smaller penalties to stats and have the size of an adult of their race. Young Creature template's penalties are bigger and it is smaller, indicating that it should be younger. For a human that would be below 8 years old. Dunno if that's what you want. If not, I'd suggest using the rules for young characters instead of the template. The template is more intended for monsters either way really (although I'm often using it for NPCs and PCs myself, though houseruled to better represent a kid of such a young age).

I'm using the Young template, which is different, but I did lowered the age to 12 before it becomes too late to edit the first post. Also based on that link that you provided it seems to suggest that 'young' is between 9 and 14. On the suggestion of just using the other rules and not use the template... that could work, though of note is that it seems to suggest only NPC classes for young characters using those rules.

The NPC classes thing is stupid and should be ignored.
And yes, Young human would be between 8 and 14, but note that you're making a Young Creature human, which is different as you noticed. I'm saying it should be younger than 8 because 8-14 is already represented by Young characters rules.

I would ignore such rules involving NPC classes.

Perhaps, but I was playing under the idea these sets of rules don't have to apply at the same time. More of note, I have two brothers between the age 12 and 13... who I would say are around/near the height of a gnome, 'Small' size though perhaps the high end of the scale.

Hmm... at least so I thought. I admit, the main reason I wanted the Young template is it counters the cost for the Dream Creature template. Also because children arguably have greater imagination and stronger dreams.

Perhaps it would be better to have the character be a girl, as at that age they can... often be of shorter height.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Buy Coliseum Morpheon for your DM and/or read Matt Banach's novel Lost in Dream.

Kevin Andrew Murphy wrote a great fiction piece of a dream-spun sorcerer iirc for the DungeonLands: Tomb of the Lich Queen kickstarter...
