Mark your calendars! This fall sees the inaugural edition of Skål Con, the newest gaming convention in Minnesota!

When: September 18-20
Where: The Fantasy Flight Games Event Center, Roseville, MN

Skål Con is three days of Pathfinder Society play to kick off Season 7. We will schedule the Tier 1-11 special Siege of Serpents along with multiple tables of The True Dragons of Absalom, Serpents Rise, the first three Season 7 scenarios, and others as well.

Skål Con is also a means for the PFS community to give back. Every dollar we make after recouping our expenses is being donated to a local charity. We will have items for auction and sale to help meet our goals.

We are still in the planning stages, but felt we have enough to whet yer all's appetites.

For those of you who know me or have seen a photo, this next bit should interest you. If, over the course of the convention, we raise a certain dollar amount I will shave my head and beard. Rest assured, this goal is no small number. I have had one haircut in three years. That's what this means to me.

We will need volunteers, naturally, because all of you make our jobs (lives) easier. If you have any questions, ask here or shoot me an email.

I will update the thread with more information as we finalize our plans.

Let's do this, people!

Special mention to the wonderful people at Fantasy Flight Games. With out their generous support, this con would not happen. If you shake down the couch, please think about throwing some of the coins you find their way.

The Exchange 3/5

I volunteer.

I might also be up for sweetening the hair pot.

Great stuff - a much shorter drive than GenCon, soon afterwards, and with less racism! As logn as it's not the same weekend as our local Convocation, I'll try and make it.

4/5

I'd also be interested in making the trip down from Winnipeg. We'll have to play around with our Convocation dates and see what we can come up with!

Sovereign Court 4/5

I'm going to post so we have 60% Canadian content. We'll see what we can make happen.

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ****

That'll be great if you can all make it! Promises to be a great event!

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

September 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day. Expect lots of pirate-y goodness.

You have been warned.

The Exchange 3/5

Prepping Plunder and Peril.

I want to announce the charity we selected to donate to. The Tubman organization provides resources for women, children, and families struggling with relationship violence, substance abuse and mental health.

They are Minnesota's largest provider of domestic violence services.

Along with the above, Tubman offers a host of other programs. From legal support to resource counseling and all things in between, Tubman helps over 40,000 people in the metro area get the help they need to have the full, healthy, happy lives they deserve.

Even if you can't attend the convention, please consider purchasing a ticket, because it helps defray costs and allows us to donate more to an organization doing work that in a just world would not be necessary.

For more information, please visit their website tubman.org.

The Exchange 3/5

Certainly there can be no greater foundation for a con than a good cause and Canadian pirates.

The Exchange 3/5

The Presidential Suite at the Radisson was already booked.

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

Progress moves apace!

We are close to letting you give us money and sign up for games. A few more items need to happen before it goes live, but rest assured we are getting there.

The Exchange 3/5

I will start practicing my Skal-ing immediately.

The Exchange

Why is there no history of PFS or even pathfinder games being played at Fantasy Flight? Nothing on its calendar to show it as a planned event either.

4/5 5/5

Check out our Meetup site, instead. Several tables of PFS are run at FFG on both Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons. I forget if it's weekly or biweekly, but that Meetup site will have all the details.

Update time!

Our warhorn page is live. Go visit and register for the convention. Also, every dollar goes towards a great cause so even if you can't attend a wonderful weekend of gaming, please consider purchasing a badge. Thanks.

And... registered!

Indeed, looking forward to it.

Sweet!

Will be a blast! I am sure we'll have to have some conversation on what makes a good pathfinder (instead of the murder hobos we often see!)

Bret and I are both volunteering to GM! Will you need help with set up or the registration table?

Come on people! Let's do this!

Let's make the goal so I don't get called a hippie at next year's Paizocon! I want to find out if all my superpowers derive from my flowing locks!

Grrrr.... stupid web people changing links with out telling you....

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

A little over a month remains!

We are nearing our first fund raising goal but need a little more to push us over the edge.

Will you be that person? Let's do this!

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ****

Less than two weeks? Can it be possible?

This apple of Mr Dehning's eye?

Don't let the threat that Jon will be dressing up as THUNDERLIPS! scare you... especially when he's been trying to figure out how to do the continual flame on his <redacted>. We'll make sure he is sufficiently covered up!

So exited! Getting to run Serpents Rise twice, as well as the chaos that is Siege of Serpents! Going to be so much fun!

5 different season 7 scenarios, plus a whole suite of pirate-themed scenarios? WOWSERS!

I was just told that Andy Christian is holding us all hostage by threatening to come naked if Jon's fundraising goals are not met. Please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELP US!

The preceding statement may or may not be true - you should still donate, it's a good cause

No one wants that. Especially because you know he'll be posting the pics of that all over the internet. Especially on paizo.com

Rumor has it he has figured out how to replace all avatar images with his junk should this happen.

That all depends on who you think it is -- but the name I chose was for reason. I hope all things have been well for you! It's been a quite a long time since San Angelo...

Dear sir, I am thinking that he is in understanding if what it is that is being described, and that his response is certainly in line with appropriateness of having his nethers widely disseminated across the wires of the world. It is indeed a shocking mind tangle...

Tired, stiff, and humbled.

We have the greatest community of people. I am stunned by the generosity displayed these past three days by the men and women of our area. I do not want to sound over the top or hyperbolic, but other words do not, can not express the emotions running through me.

Simply amazing.

Thank you.

Not physically bald yet. We are going to set a date in the next couple weeks that will be taped for folks to watch.

However, We made the money to make Jon bald on Friday, and by around 2pm today, we hit the mark to make me bald.

Thanks Chris Mortika!

And after Andy left Jon raised enough money to get both of them a full wax!

This event will not be taped

Cross posted in this thread

I think I have recovered from the weekend and last night to write with some eloquence.

This past weekend was, simply put, amazing. Unbelievable. Stunning. Over 70 people came together as a community and raised more funds for Tubman than I ever thought we would. Going into September I thought "If we can raise $1500 I'm going to be really happy." We smashed $1500 by 6:20pm Friday night. At 8:30pm we surpassed $2000. What happened next is just one reason why our community is so special.

When I made the announcement to the room that we had made our goal of $2000 and that I would be getting a shave and a hair cut, Chris Mortika, unprompted, called out "How much more do we need to raise to get Andy to shave his head?" After Andy recovered from his initial shock, he set our next goal; we needed to raise $3500. I thought we could do it. I wasn't sure, but... something just seemed right. We still had raffle tickets and dice to sell, and the silent auction was just getting started.

Saturday was a full day of gaming. The piratey goodness filled the room with an energy that was palpable; you could feel it. You could see it on people's faces. There was laughter, there was shouting, there was gaming happening. It was beautiful sight. We ran twelve tables of "Siege of Serpents" Saturday night to cap an awe inspiring day. But the best moments of our inaugural con were still to come.

The young man we have already mentioned above was for me, one of the single greatest moments I have ever had in this hobby. Better than the first time I cracked open the 1st edition Deities and Demi-gods book. Better than the time at GenCon a very wonderful women excitedly told me she wanted to play at my table on Sunday because "Everyone at your table looks like they are having so much fun!" After chatting for a few minutes, I looked over to our HQ and told one of our volunteers to grab a Beginner's Box and please bring it to me. Seeing his eyes light up and the look on his face when I told him, "Here. This is for you" and the barely contained cry of joy from him as he ran over to his mother is a memory I will never forget. I will never forget it because that was me 30 years ago. You would think that be enough, but you are wrong. There is more to this story.

I walked out of the room hoping to catch them before they left. I shouldn't have worried as they spent the rest of the day at the convention. So I had a chance to chat with his mother a bit. She told me how he has mild Asperger's. She told me stories of how he would spend hours doing research about Pathfinder reading everything he could find, but how he had very few friends and thus no one to play with. She was so happy to find out about us so he would have an opportunity to finally play and she wanted to make sure I knew that if his behavior became problematic that she could intervene. I told her it wasn't necessary. I told her that he was among friends, he had found his tribe. We would not judge him, but instead welcome him into our community and treat him as one of us. I could see her start to tear up. She was so happy for her son because we made him feel welcome. Seeing a mother cry tears of happiness all because we showed kindness and love to young man whom none of us knew was what made this the single greatest moment I have ever experienced in any role-playing capacity. Little did I know our community would surprise me one more time on Sunday.

I knew we were close to making our new goal of $3500, but not the exact amount. So I did a quick check of our finances. When I saw how much we had raised, I began to giggle. I couldn't stand still. I had to make an announcement. Grabbing the bowl of dice, I walked to the front of the room and made the following statement, "Pathfinders! I have a very special announcement! I just wanted to tell you we are a mere FORTY-FIVE dollars away from making our goal of $3500!" Before I could even finish, several people stood up from their tables, grabbed their wallets/purses, and began to almost run to me pulling out whatever cash they had. I got more than $45 dollars. The first person there gave me forty-five dollars. Once again, our community of players surpassed my expectations.

We raised $3735 for Tubman.

People who know me understand I am rarely at a loss for words. This past weekend left me stunned silent. Thank you to everyone who gave.

There are a few people I need to thank. First is Clinton Boomer who volunteered his time to run three sessions of the retired scenario "Hands of the Muted God". I want to thank John Compton for allowing us to offer this scenario for credit. Thank you.

I want to thank everyone who donated items to our silent auction. I want to acknowledge Liz Courts for her gift of custom character artwork and Erin Shursen for donating two pre-painted minis (Crowe and Kyra). These items were two of our biggest money makers. Thank you very much.

I want to thank Fantasy Flight Games for being the best host a brand spanking new convention could ever want. With out their generous support this would not have happened.

I want to thank all of our volunteers. You all made the convention run with zero emergencies. Thank you.

I need to thank Andy Christian, Keith Apperson, Jack Brown, Jolene Danner, Erica Loppnow, and AJ Torgerud. These are the cabal who latched on to my crazy idea (We can put a convention together in six months, right?) and made it reality. With out their hard work, dedication, and ability to put up with me Skal Con would not exist. Bravo everyone.

Well done, all!

Perhaps putting something together as a guide or resource for others who want to do a charity con would be in order?

You all should be proud of what you accomplished - you are credits to the society, all of you!
