Anyone find it odd that the brawler has an option for SA but the monk doesn't

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Before any of this gets started I would like to clarify that the Brawler's option for SA, snakebite striker, has a very weak progression as it should. I am also aware that flurry of blows and sneak attack is a really powerful sounding idea. The brawler's Brawler's flurry class skill would provide extra attacks and it can get SA, but it is off set by the very slow progression of the class' SA and that fighting with your fists kinda sucks. I don't think a monk archetype with SA would be game breaking at all and may provide the class with a helpful, if a little situational boon. I'm sure someone has wanted to make some form of martial artist assassin, I think it would be a nice option for the class that would at the very least help fulfill certain character concepts. Any thoughts?

Some form of Martial Artist Assassin? Monk/Ninja multiclassing.

I think the idea was that it'd be nice to avoid multiclassing as that'd devastate a monk's flurry, and since a brawler can do this, why not a monk?

Because Sneak Attack is not good, and Monk is better off for not having it.

First off, if you were trying to min/max or optimize or whatever you probably wouldn't be picking monk as your main class. Second, I'm getting really tired of optimization trumping conceptual fun when people make characters. I don't think I've played with a single person in PFS who's character wasn't just a pile of super effective mechanics rather than a character.

Maybe the problem is with PFS then. Or maybe you just have a different gaming style than PFS. Have you considered other venues to play?

As to the OP, the monk gaining SA would be much more powerful than any other class because they have access to Abundant Step, and thus the entire feat chain that leads up to Dimensional Savant, which allows them to flank on all attacks thus granting them the ability to qualify for sneak attack on virtually every attack, of which they have plenty thanks to flurry of blows. They would be, without any doubt, the best sneak attacker in the game.

Hm, was not aware of these abundant step feats. Perhaps the archetype could replace abundant step with another useful tool that would not provide such a powerful boon to SA. Also there is only one home game I'm aware of in my area and it is unfortunately full, so I have tried to find other ways to play.

Here's an idea.

Lol good spongebob reference, but the game I mentioned IS the people from my local PFS group.
