Multiclassing, dipping and how to build the stealthy character my party needs.

Advice

How are passives, skills and all bonuses allocated to the character sheet when you dip into another class?

I have lately been mulling over the design of a character that fits me. I have really narrowed it down to Inquisitor (I just love all the possibilities for RP). And since I have let the ideas tumble through my head while reading various threads.

I have been pestering people here about an Intimidate build for a heavy melee fighting inquisitor. But as of late the idea of a stealthy Infiltrator Inquisitor/Rogue has been bouncing around in there.

The main reason this has come to the forefront is that my current weekly group is running everything BUT a stealthy character. We have everyone just run headlong into fights and hope for the best. Along with not really having a good face for the party (Wisdom to Bluff and Diplomacy twice...yum).

So as a newer player I just wanted to know how the dipping functions. What options I have with these two classes. Would it be better to Rogue and dip for a couple levels into Inquisitor or vice versa? I am also concerned about combat as a combo of these two. I would not need to be the most lethal member of my group (We have a Paladin that rips things apart and a Summoner lighting things up with his Eidolons).

Thanks for the help again! You are all wonderful!

They are done the same way as if you do not multiclass.

Also if you are the only stealthy character the others may ruin your stealthy. However if you go ahead of the party then you need to be able to escape or be a decent combatant if you are corned.

You don't really need stealth to avoid charging into a fight. If you have a high perception you might hear the enemies well before you seem them. That might give the party a chance to buff up.

Also, I would suggest being a ninja instead of a rogue, they lose some abilities, but they are generally better, considering they can turn invisible.

If you want a stealthy character you don’t need to multiclass. The inquisitor gets almost as many skill points as a rogue. Due to their bonus to several skills they actually end up being a better skill monkey than the rogue.

The inquisitor is the absolute worst class to multiclass with. Most of their class features are level dependent so they end up losing a lot more than they will ever gain. The only thing a rogue can do that a inquisitor cannot do is disarm magical traps. Finding traps is something anyone with a good perception roll can do. Disable device allows you to disarm mechanical traps. Dispel magic is on your spell list so once you have that you can also deal with magical traps.

Judgements and bane are a lot better than sneak attack. If you really want the “Rogue” abilities go for a Sanctified Slayer. They trade away judgments for sneak attack and slayer talents.

There's a FAQ which eliminates getting an ability score added twice to a skill (or to anything much else).

An inquisitor/rogue (or a single-classed rogue) isn't significantly more stealthy than an inquisitor. Rogue talents add very little. If you want a dip to increase stealth I suggest one level in sorcerer with the seeker archetype, to allow you to easily use wands/scrolls of useful sorcerer spells and to get the ability to disarm magical traps.

Don't multiclass with inquisitor. If stealthy is your goal and you don't want to be ranged then look at wisdom in the flesh trait as it works pretty good.
