Oracle revelations and multiclassing.

Rules Questions

Select one weapon with which you are proficient. You gain Weapon Focus with that weapon. At 8th level, you gain Improved Critical with that weapon. At 12th level, you gain Greater Weapon Focus with that weapon. You do not need to meet the prerequisites to receive these feats.

As this doesn't specify "oracle levels", would this progress with multiclassing?

Of note:

Touch of Flame wrote:
As a standard action, you can perform a melee touch attack that deals 1d6 points of fire damage +1 point for every two oracle levels you possess. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier. At 11th level, any weapon that you wield is treated as a flaming weapon.

This is an FAQ or developer comments somewhere stating that abilities of classes generally only refer to the level of the class that provides the ability, unless it specifies otherwise.

The writers are not necessarily good about including a reference that it should only be for the class that provides the ability.

But to answer your question more directly, no it does not progress with multiclassing.

Thanks Claxon.

Wasn't expecting it would, but had to ask.

No problem, glad to help.

Everything is written with single class in mind. So anything that says "per level" or "At xth level" is specifying in that class.

I'm new to this site... so sorry if this post is too old to comment on.

However, I've always interpreted, at least the wording pertaining to Oracle Revelations, as: If it reads, "per oracle level"... then that is referring to levels taken in Oracle. But for the revelations that don't specify, it is not intended to require levels taken in Oracle, such as with the Battle Oracle revelation, "weapon mastery". It bags you 3 or 4 feats over the course of 15 levels, making it a very viable dip at the cost of BAB, a possible bonus feat, and full class progression for a bit of flavor in a character.

Then there are the revelations, which read, "You must be level 7 or 11 to choose this revelation. I read this, RAI, to mean that these are only available to characters with that many levels in Oracle. That gives an advantage for pure Oracles.

For example a character with 7 levels in oracle, could take the revelation at 7th level that has that as a prerequisite and then multi-class into something else, still to get the scaling benefits of that particular revelation.

I may be very wrong, but this seems more logical to me and I feel when the publisher does write "levels in oracle" or "oracle levels", it makes sense that it would be intended so for that particular ability etc... for power balance purposes.

I guess i haven't looked through the wording in other class abilities enough to support this theory. It's just how I initially interpreted the wordings for revelations.

As previously stated, the text for all class abilities assumes the character is single classed. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, 'level' for class abilities refers to 'level in this class' rather than character level. Sometimes they spell this out, but other times they don't.
