GM, I was wondering if there's any particular commonly-spoken regional language in this setting that it would be likely for a well-traveled seawoman like Joan to have picked up either here in Journey's Rest or elsewhere in her travels.
Alternately, does Sign Language exist in this setting? I could see it as being useful for sailors to communicate back and forth from one end of a ship to the other, rather than shouting everything over the winds. (You know, just catch a shipmate's attention with a signal whistle, then hold a conversation via hand signs, rather than shouting the whole thing or making someone climb down from the crow's nest.)
If not, I'll just pick a racial language and say she had a friend of that race for a while.
Thanks!

When the blonde guy drops his pots and Salty heads over to him, Joan takes the opportunity to comment softly to Elenia and Mirandir,

"Great. A cook who can't stay awake and has no clue what's going on or a cook who has no sense of tact and can't help himself from provoking fights. Do we have a third option?"

She scans the line for other cook-type individuals.

Also, FYI, Salty, Steven, Derrick, Barin, and all, I really like your characters, so please don't take Joan's two-faced comments personally! She just can't help herself from finding the worst in people ... unless she's talking directly to their faces.

Steven: Not that I know of. We can make history here!
Joan: No problem. Yes, Valaravans lacks tact... and sure likes fighting.

The half orc answers.
"Valaravans... but people calls me 'Salty'."
Damn it! Steven is better cook than Valaravans!

Silver Crusade

(again, sorry, just have sooo many aliases.. don't want to make another until selected ;) )

After hearing the conversation and insult to the clumsy lad, Derrick walks over,

Yeah? well ye smell like the wet arse of the last fish ye gutted! Which I may add, was a wee bit rotten!

Then turns to other cook.

Aye, no postings far as I know. Names Derrick.

as Salty gives his name. Derrick responds.

Heh, can't imagine why they would do that now.

I wrote that Steven smell like feathers not as an insult (even if it can be taken like that), but because of his hawk familiar.

tries to hold back a chuckle
Salty? He he What did they call you before "Pepper" Ha Haha

The laughing makes him sit down back on his chair.

Silver Crusade

Derrick would be assuming it as an insult, partly due to the matter-of-fact manner you said to "go away, jobs taken", and the fact that it seems Steven took it as such. Besides, Derrick loves a good battle of wits, (in a form).

He looks to Steven, Lad, the better insult would be, -Peppers-, calling someone pepper would just be silly.

if this is a battle of wits ...I'm sure am going in unarmed

Points at the old man

That's even Better!

"Well, 'Salty', you find me on board ship when you're ready to stop reacting like a beast and let the human half of you do some plotting." Nayli turns on a heel and starts strutting off, only to whirl in alarm at the sound of crashing metal. Did I go too far? Is he going to kill me?

She turns to see what looks to be a boy with a ragged shock of blonde hair scrambling to pick up his pots and pans. As she watches, he introduces himself to the half-orc, tries to stand up for himself, and just as quickly backs down. I can't...I just can't intervene in this any longer. I won't. Instead of helping or leaving, she returns to the women she was talking to earlier. "By the Lady, I hope we're not aboard with him. That leering monster's likely to butcher someone, and that's just not the right way to do business."

She catches the last bit of Joan's whisper. "I'd sooner have the boy, he looks nicer, but it's not likely he'll live long enough to embark. Not unless that fool gnome comes back with his thugs and decides to put 'Salty' in his place." She shakes her head, reaching up to scratch at her hair again. Not likely. His kind just want to boss around the menials, like that Errol. Him, Allisandre, and probably the name-taker up there.

Silver Crusade

a note of point, ingame Derrick WILL be disguised to appear older, (late 20s to mid 30s) but he is really only about 23 ;)

sorry was basing it off the avatar

* edit points at the "Young" man

The insult is not perceived as such by Valaravans.
"No, they call me Salty because there are some who thinks I use too much salt in the food. But the yucca I made also had pepper. So sorry, but you will need to find another boat to cook on."

Putting a finger on his chin like he is contemplating something

NA!

Smiles big while putting his feet up on the table

I'm QUITE conferrable right here, and until I hear from the Boss man himself that the job is taken. I'm staying right where I am.

The hawk next to him squawks at the Salty man

Nods at bird

Right?

A man in a most unusual full-body cloak hurries up to the line. His face is even obscured by the weird leaf thing, but he removes the leafy head-covering.

"Greetings!" he calls cheerily to man at the head of the line.

He smiles and nods at various people along the way, "Oh, yes, pardon me, oh excuse me, oh, quite right, excellent - oh, and a good day to you sir, yes indeed, things are looking up!" he exclaims to a man he passes by who, it must be admitted, does have a finger pointed upward in the air at the stranger who simply escorts himself to the front of the queue.

A small something glints beneath his strange cloak.

"Ah, right, Thomas Silverspoon reporting for duty as-requested by 'the man' hisself, yessir!" he beams brightly.

Bluff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

DC 5 Sense Motive:
The captain clearly has not called for him.

He winks, and then, "Well, I suppose I hain't been requested yet, mind, but when he sees my skill with a ledger, marking the marks, and making the books, and what not? H'I'll be requested right-smart!" he explains jovially, writing his name down on the edge of the sheet despite the angry looks of others.

Bluff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

DC 19 Sense Motive:
The man seems... nervous, about something. He's continually looking over his shoulder and around at others, as if searching for something. Though he seems easy-going enough, and perhaps overly-touchy-feely and highly animated, the latter mostly seems to be a movement to disguise how his arms move frequently to grasp something near his chest.

Tacticslion's character is mostly ready. I have to put my Trait bonuses to work in the stat block, but I've spent all my money - literally, so Thomas is also desperate because he's just spent his last dime - and most everything is ready to go. Please note my traits - I've chosen three plus a drawback, however the last one and the drawback to get it are not necessary for the character. I've not yet written in the "Coward" flaw, I selected from your list at the beginning. I also am using my "fortune deck" as a holy symbol (I'm presuming a clasp around the deck to keep it together)... let me know if that's not kosher.

EDIT: HAH! I wasn't really trying to bluff the first one anyway... but that's great. I like it. Spoiler for Bluff DCs are now up. Also, once to finish a sentence.

Been ill so sorry not been posting to the conversation so much...

In response to Joan after all the gesticulating at each other by the wanna-be cooks...
Elenia says: "I've not had experience clerking on a boat before, but I have read up on it and I am used to checking goods in and out from my training. Even wizards like to keep inventories you know."

Elenia looks at Steven and Salty and says to Steven "The proof is in the cooking. I see no evidence of your culinary creations. Besides, aren't YOU rather young to be a cook?"

Elenia is meant to come across as condescending to you all , rather than plain rude - comes from a lot of reading and not so much conversing with others.....

this is the submission form Riuk i can post several time a day with no issue ^_^

---===Background===---:

Quin Kosen is a pure blooded chelaxian, or so he thought since he has little to no Orcis fetchers. He was born 19 years ago in a well off noble family closely related to house Henderthane and in the business of military supplies for generations. As the youngest of four, he was constantly emulating his brothers, trying to be as fast, as strong and as tough any of them. As they grew up, his three elders brothers joined a military academy to integrate the Chelaxian army as officers. The first two, Marcellus and Bruttes decided to join the army, while the third one, Braccus chose the navy as a marine officer. At the age of only of 15, he thought his life was all but traced. As Quin's brothers, he would join a military academy and be a loyal officer and spread the might of Cheliax to all these uncultured barbarians.

Begging information form his brothers and their friends, Quin carefully selected his academy and full of confidence, approached their parents with his plan. Like Braccus, he would be a marine an protect the seas of their homeland. The answer was short and clear, he was going to marry one of the neighboring nobles daughters to raze the family name. So if his brothers did not want to take over the family business, as it was their choice since all ready having established them selves in the military. However, as his father explained is a few short sentences, he would keep the business in the family, willing or no. The shock was huge but Quin knew better than to openly oppose his parents. Planning his escape from the life he did not want, he waited for a marine recruitment campaign to happen in a nearby town and enlisted under a false name. He trusted his talents to raise through the ranks to what his social position should be. The first months were quick to deflate Quin's ego. Gone was the nice house with all the servants and slaves, gone were the individual tutors or the well prepared meals. As every one, he had to learn to crawl, climb, jump, and swim but despite being one of the youngest recruits, he found himself at ease on a ship deck or high in the rigging learning how to maintain a ship. They were not even allowed to touch a weapon. When eventually they did, the training with Qiun's brothers showed and at last he could impress his officers.

After a full year of classes, Quin was eventually affected to a real ship, the Sailors Mercy, a fast Chelaxian cutter built to fight of the fast ships of the Shackle's pirates. The company was good except for a veteran sergeant who took a particular interest on him. Not very interested in this domain, Quin tried to spurn the vet's advances, but did so in front of half his company. Humiliated, the sergeant swore to make him pay and from that day Quin's life turned to hell. he only got the worst tasks, found himself constantly harassed, punched and insulted by fellow marines. Trying to go through normal channels to complain was just met by careless dismissals and even more harassment and Quin found himself alone as all his "friends" deserted him to protect themselves.

In Quin, the lawful and idealist chelaxian, something snapped, something more powerful than he thought welled up to the surface. One day, as the sergeant had once again cornered him in a small gangway and was going to beat him into complying with his needs, Quin felt all his dark thoughts condensate and he leap at him, one hand outstretched as if to strangle him. Laughing, the sergeant swatted him hands aside, that's when a power Quin did not know he had. Now he was tall strong, the Sargent took a step back drawing a sword but, before he could attack Quin lunged forward and ripped out his throat the blood sprayed out and the Sargent died in a gurgle of pain.
The shock of what he did was so strong that Quin drooped his new form and lost consciousness. he was found there covered by the dead sergeant's blood. With ample proofs of his crime, Quin could be formally condemned to death. However, thinking he could have accomplices, the captain had him tortured to extract every thing they could and learned of Quin's birth. Suddenly afraid of his family ties and the repercussions Quin's death could have on his career, he decided to delay the execution until their return but had him repeatedly whipped within inches of his life. One day, as Quin was brought back from his almost daily flogging, one of the guardians slipped and Quin managed to escape and throw himself overboard, miles from the closest shore.
By the time the officers had realized he was gone, the boat was far away. As Quin had almost no chances of making it, they decided that turning back to find him was not worth it. Left alone to drown, half-maddened by the pain of the flogging Quin's power came to his aid again changing him into shark. Using this power, he swam on until the injuries for the countless floggings almost ended him. As luck would have it, he was in the path of a drifting timber the last remains of a shipwreck no doubt. With his last strength Quin tied himself to it with a belt and kept afloat.
A few days later, the timber was pushed on a trading route and he was found, barely alive by the Sea witch. Quin eventually reached this new port, with nothing to his name but and old trident and an old set of hard cracked leather armor and in need of work. Quin makes his way to the dock with a peace of paper promising work.

His shattered ideal and treatment at the hand of the chelaxian Navy has turned Quin into a harder man. While he can be outspoken and brash, he is not as naive as he used to be and does not hesitate to use his new found power as assurance to have his way. He also has a weak spot for bullied people and will try to protect them as best as he can. He also does not take well threats to himself and will act quickly to end that threat, either recoils and seeks revenge later or explodes in fury. But Quin never forgets or forgives.

just made a profile for him

Just to have a small bit of role play with him ^_^:

A tall man well mussel bound man smelling heavily of salt and sea walks into the room. He only is wearing the bottom half of some kind of leather armor carrying an old worn trident, this man is covered with some kind of strange marking across hos chest and arms. He has a thick beard and shoulder length dreadlocks. He looks around the room taking a good look at everyone gathered in this place.

"looks like quite a few green ones trying for there fist time at sea.."He thought to himself, as Quin walked in he sees a small group of what at first glance seams lit potentially useful lot.

in a hard voice he ask
"Is this were those looking to crew for the ‘Lady Sue’ are gathering...well the name is Shark, ive been to long from the sea and i be looking to join as the shipwright i have a fair hand at repairing any damage that can befall a ship out there in the sea. What be your skill set in then..."hope its cool that i threw in a bit of an accent in that ^_^

@Thomas: Card deck is fine as holy symbol.

@joan: Go for Polyglot. Tends to be favored by sailors (shouting at other boats... that's what spells are for).

@gm
any issues with my character? Quin "Shark" Kosen

Shadow Lodge

As Nayli remarks on the half-orc, she hears Barin's voice in her ear, saying, "If'n ye searched for the whole of that monstrosity's pit'ful lifespan, could ye find somebody who would like to travel with him?" The people in the vicinity glance around, but the dwarf is kneeling about twenty feet away, playing with his octopus and smiling to himself.

That reminds me, I forgot to put up my spells known list.

Spells Known:

0th: Message, Prestidigitation, Acid Splash, Daze.
1st: Touch of the Sea, Enlarge Person.

The comments about cooking got the first sign of a sense of humor from the usually morbid elf. His face looked like it was about to chuckle, but one didn't come out. Instead he simply shook his head as his face returned to it's usual stern look.

"Personally, doesn't matter who cooks. If it's vaguely edible and doesn't kill you, that's all you can really hope for."

When the half-orc started acting aggressively, Mirandir simply sighed. "If you're intending to pick a fight greenskin, get on with it. Better it's finished before the gnome returns. Don't want our potential boss being inadvertently hurled in the sea or through a window."

"I don't want to pick a fight, elf. But if somebody comes looking for one, I will gladly give it. And is not the same who cooks. Food is the most important thing you need on the ship. Food is the heart, the muscle, the courage and the power. Food is like wind to the sails. Without it you are dead on the water. You are food for somebody stronger. And wiser."

Silver Crusade

RP-

While I agree, food is important, It keeps people alive, but the TRUE heart of the ship is the morale, and nothing raises morale like a good, inspiring shanty! and maybe a small dance!

When the mwangi man in the leafy cloak jovially pushes past, Joan mutters sarcastically to Nayli and Mirandir,

" ... aaaaand now we've been brushed aside by a walking shrubbery. Thank you, sir, my day is now complete."

When the marked, dreadlocked man holding the trident noisily joins the back of the line on the docks, Joan whispers to her new companions,

"Whoa. Look what the sea washed up today. And I thought Errol's hair was bad!"

@GM - Take 'polyglot' as a language? Okay! I'm not familiar with it as such.
(Or, is it some kind of character option I missed on the pfsrd? The ones I found were options for rogues, linguists, or halflings.)
Thanks!

Silver Crusade

How Derrick looks right now.

Going with the humanoid eidolon, the idea is to look kind of like someone might envision Shimye-Magalla. The "rune" looks like a wave-star gestalt surrounded by really tiny cards...

Evolutions are gills, lowlight vision, and swim.

EDIT: hm, also, because I'd had the tab open for so long, I missed DM-Judd's Errol post! Oops! No more dice-rolling... sorry...

At the sound of shanty and food, a very hungry- and happy-looking man spins 'round and heads over toward the blonde human (Derrick) and the brown-haired girl (Joan), putting a hand 'round both their shoulders drawing them together with some others nearby.

"Food?" he says, "Music? Lovely!" he exclaims.

"Oh, yes, let's! Say, who here can cook? Anyone? Give us a demonstration, eh? Let's see some of those cooking skills in action, yah? Excellent way to make friends! Excellent all-round! Everyone who can should pitch in, so we can all share!" he enthuses at everyone, grinning, broadly. "Best way of making friends and not foes, my Ma always used to say! Right-sharp, she did! Friends instead of foes!"

I'd normally roll a diplomacy... but, uh, let's just presume it's an 18, I guess, as if I took 10? (My previous "+7" did not include my trait bonus.) EDIT: for clarity and a tad of character. EDIT 2: Also, I've updated a number of elements in my sheet with the appropriate links. I think Thomas is all done... I think he is... Please let me know if there are any errors that I need to change!

Joan casts Mirandir, Elenia, and Nayli a quick look of What the heck? as she is unceremoniously swept away by the Mwangi shrubbery, but a lovely smile soon springs to her face.

"Friends are definitely better than foes, Mr. Bush. Or, should I just call you Shrub?"

A playful smile teases at Joan's lips.

"Right now I'm afraid the latest cooking demonstration can be found scattered over there on the dock, thanks to a rather heated encounter between one of our dwarf friends and one of our half-orc friends. However, it'd still be quite tasty, if you don't mind the extra flavoring of the dirt."

Joan raises an eyebrow, wondering if this guy would stoop that low.

EDIT: FYI GM, I now realize polyglot is indeed a language in the Inner Sea World Guide. I'll take it. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Salty look at the strangely dressed human.
"I can cook. Don't you get worried your clothes or whatever you call those reeds you are wearing catch fire? I had bring some nice fried yucca, but it was toss aside by that dwarf."

"Oh, how excellent! 'Heated' cooking is so much better than the plain old 'but it's got lime juice!' they had back home, let me tell you! Alas, however, one can never tell what's happened, exactly, 'pon the docks, so I shan't happen 'pon it, either, I'm afraid!"

He sighs heavily, leaning on his two "new friends" for a moment.

Then, looking at the dwarf and half-orc, "But alas! The masterpieces of culinary delights that the two of you surely, surely crafted are ruined! Mayhap, perchance, with a wee bit o' diplominating, the two of you could find quite a few intriguing and most excellent elements to work together wherewith we all might agree 'pon the primacy of your cooking! By which, of course, I mean, let's try it again! And this time we can watch (or help) you work together, or you can have a most excellent and agreed 'pon statement before-hand, upon the completion of which the victor might gain some spoils! Almost like a wager, yes?" he smiles winningly.

"I, of course, wouldn't wager... t'wouldn't be proper!"

(You are all likely keenly aware that he doesn't care a lick for "proper" anything - it's written all over his lying, if diplomatic and beaming, face.)

"I don't think the dwarf can cook. And I don't think I can stand his smell."

Silver Crusade

Derrick-

Well, I'd imagine that that is a slightly less urgent problem, what with being this close to the sea and all... Though it is indeed an odd choice of attire..

He regards Joan after her remark.

Not bad lass, you may make a fine insulter one day!

Shadow Lodge

"Well, a little late there, I cleaned th' dirt off but Tabir ate the rest of the yucca. Still, a contest of chef-ery could put our friend with the overbite in his place. Though it was quite good, I'm not lyin' there...." Barin shakes his head and turns to the shrub. "Why din't ye just say wager then? Tha' was one of the most confusin' sentences I've e'er heard." And 'course I can cook, Greeny. Not well-trained in the fine arts like you, but some of us decide to do more useful things, I'll grant."

Ninjas! Ninja half-orc cook! Ninja bard! EDIT: Ninja dwarf not-a-cook! Ninjas everywhere! Cool!

At the half-orc, "Oh, my dear friend, indeed Yucca would be delightful here, though 'tis been quite some time since I've seen it, it's true." he smiles.

Turning to Derrick at his follow-up comment, "Indeed, my blonde friend, this close to the sea 'tis no concern! But, of course, I would divest myself of my cloak were I to assist in the cooking... though in honesty, I'd mostly be moral support, and I'd wager that's what you'd want me to be! Speaking of wagering, however, I could establish a betting ring, for some 'strong guesses' on which of our cooks would 'win' the competition, if I, perhaps, had a few investors willing to put some money on the line to make some quick coin..." he looks around slyly.

Glancing at the half-orc "And if the dwarf can't, indeed, cook, than I'd say you may just have it in the bag! Would you be willing to allow these fine folk to judge for you? Or perhaps a specific pre-selected panel of unbiased judges? Hm?" he winks at Joan as he says this.

EDIT: At the dwarf's notice, he adds, "Ah, I wouldn't doubt you for a minute! Not even a second, good dwarf!" he notes, seriously, "And that has very little to do with the fact that you're holding a pointy thing, and very much because you seem to know exactly how not to waste good Yucca, despite any ground-hugging said Yucca may have done! Among any other obvious talents you may have!"

OOC: I'd say that any betting going on would not, in fact, cause money to change hands, considering we're here in Recruitment and not Gameplay. EDIT: for clarity

Silver Crusade

Heh, Alirghty, my money's on the lad with the bird there. 5 gold coins to him! He pulls out a small coin pouch and tosses it around.

I'll sing a shanty while they work ifn' ye want. Maybe play a little tune so everyone can join the good mood, make a bet before noon, and pay me before the food!

Shadow Lodge

Barin is completely nonplussed by the insane man's statement. "Wha're you talkin' 'bout? I don't have anything pointy on me but some spears! An' I'm not e'en holdin' 'em! An' I can barely use 'em well to save me life! An' there's no need to doubt me, I ain't enterin' no contest. Don't need that to see who's better."
As a side note, how does an untrained Profession check even work? What could I do with it? Because technically, I have a Profession (cook) of +4.

At Derrick's compliment, Joan smiles innocently,

"Who me? An insulter? Nah, I'm too sweet."

According to this, you earn about 1 silver per day on average. ((Though that means you could earn different amounts...)) In any event, hypothetically, you could offer advice by making a basic DC of 10... :D

Nodding at the dwarf a little nervously - almost as if he doesn't trust someone holding something sharp and then specifically denying its combat potential - he replies "Ah, hm, yes, good, good! I see, I see!"

Looking over at the blonde human (Derrick), he adds, "So, a young lad and a strong half-orc man, head-to-head in a cooking battle ro~yal? Excellent!" he smiles, hopefully. He lets go of Joan and Derrick at last (not that he had much of a grip).

"Well, if you're willing to place your bets, let's put one right here, and another right here..." he indicates his sturdy leaf hat for one and his bandana (which he takes off of his head) for the other.

"Step up one, step up all, for a battle ro~yaaaaal, between this fine young fellow here," he gestures, indicating young Steven, "... and this most excellent person of character here!" he indicates "Salty".

Noting Joan's comment, he adds, "And with a lovely face like your own, who could doubt it, my dear?" he winks once again, and then, "Choose your bets! Make your mark!"

Nayli sits down nearby, stretching out her legs and watching the newcomer's antics. Everyone's friend is no-one's friend, Allisandre once said. Poor Merina. Such a nice girl, she didn't deserve what our friendship probably got her.

She glances over at Joan, rolling her eyes, but declines to say anything. Instead, she stands and wanders over to the dwarf. "Perhaps there hasn't been anyone willing to travel with him, ever, because of his personality rather than his grotesquery. I knew a girl once, back at my temple. She had the biggest..." She struggles withe the words for a moment. "...the biggest ego. No-one could stand her, and she was always alone except when she was with a worshiper. Eventually, we ran her off, and I think she ended up in the city somewhere, alone and friendless still. In a way, I pitied her, and I pity him as well. Of course, he's still quite offensive in many ways, and I'd still prefer to travel with someone else."

She turns and looks at the shrub-man. "I'll not be betting today, thank you. If I don't make the crew, I'll need every one of my coins on the road out of here, as I don't intend to stay, and if I do make it, I'll want them aboard to wager there." Tapping the toe of her boot against the cobbles, she looks at the two would-be contestants and smiles. "Of course, this could be a good way for us to pass the time while we wait the captain's decision."

Withdrawing. I'm just too intimidated with the rp in the recruitment and it, imo, hurts the chances of the less chatty.

The dwarf sizes up the two cooks and believes Steven, despite his docility and the taste of yucca, is Salty's better. He does not feel the need to make a bet, however. He feels that the man taking bets is delusional. He sighs and tries, once more. "See me hands? I am not carryin' anything in 'em right now, pointy or otherwise. You can see that right? Now, unless you think I'm some monk what uses his fingernails as deadly weapons (which I'm not), nothin' in me hands is your problem, see? An' it's true, I can barely use them spears anyway, I'm a clan mage! Sure, it'd hurt if I hit ya with one right now, but I wouldn't and I probably couldn't hit ya neither. So why am I so threatening to you!?" Barin practically bellows the last part, immediately noticing his mistake. He realizes Nayli is talking and uses it as a cover.
"Eh, could be true. Grant'd, that wouldn't change what he's doing, but there ain't much we can do about it right now. That is, if we want to have a chance at this job." Barin smiles, crookedly. He likes having his better side show, hoping it will prove him worthy of his angelic ancestors in the other sailors' eyes. It might already be too late for that, however.
Yeah, I read that too, but I just wondered if being untrained would lead to penalties in, hypothetically let's say, this cooking contest. I think it's a matter of DM Fiat.

Edit: Very sorry about that, Noonan, it is getting kind of intense. I understand your concerns about chances too, but that would be pretty unfair.

Character info I would like:

name = Figit Heavyhand

Age = 25
General Appearance = See alias portrait
Bio:
. Figit was born under a Blessing of Besmara aboard a passenger ship, which was attacked by pirates shortly after. The ship was sunk but one of the pirates saved the newborn Figit.
. At the next port, the pirate bestowed the care of the child to one of the pirate's favorite bar wenches, who loved and raised Figit as her own, despite the race difference of her being a human and Figit being a Halfling. Growing up in a tavern atmosphere, especially one frequented by known pirates, Figit was quick to sharpen his pugilist skills, using his size to his advantage against larger opponents. Whether breaking up a threat to his "house", protecting his mother, or being underestimated due to his small stature. Figit excelled in finding the weak spots of his oppenents, winning brawls with an amazing finesse, always careful to perform a knockout non-lethaly whenever possible, these were patrons after all, and the means by which his mother earned a living. Unarmed fighting is not the only way to pass time in a tavern though, with plenty opportunity to imbibe alcohol, Figit also possesses the ability to drink liquids in an accelerated time.
. Whether it came from a sign at birth, magnificent tales shared through ale at the tavern by pirates, a search to find answers for questions he hadn't asked yet, or merely earn some coin... Figit often signed on to crews for various ships. As any able body seaman will attest, when crewing a ship, you pick up various skills that may not be required for your assigned duties. Sometimes out of necessity to fill an open assignment, or sometimes simply to pass the countless hours at sea. Of course, all crews are different and require an ability
to sense the motives of each individual. As can be expected in a area riddled with pirates, some rogue crews didn't always follow the path of the righteous. More often than not you can learn more from these type crews than your standard trade ships.

Reason to go to sea: adventure, pay, travel
3 words to describe your character: Honesty, Integrity, Pacifist
bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Extra character fluff = Brawler is 1st lvl, Rogue for following levels. Always tries to deal non-lethal damage over lethal. Can fill melee front-line flanker role in combat, skill monkey outside combat
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recruiter calls for the next applicant. Pauses and looks around, getting slightly agitated. "NEXT! please." Slowly a small halfling's head rises above the table as Figit leans up on his tip toes. Figit replies, "Ahoy mate! This be the line to crew the 'Lady Sue'? Weathers sailor Figit here. You may have heard of me, on account of me single handed-ly saving me last crew from the maw of a great Kraken."

bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

"Following that voyage, there was an incident that incapacitated me bold captain. Had I not gained the... uh hem" Figit clears his throat, "favor of a beautiful mermaid..." Figit eyes roll up and to the side, as if thinking for a moment. "... AND her SISTER!" His eyebrows dance up and down implying passionate innuendo. "Me captain would still be plummeting into the abyss at the bottom of the sea."

bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

"So where do I make me mark? The sea, she calls for another visit." The Halfling slings a seabag over his shoulder and cradles a locked chest under his arm. Obviously all his belongings and expecting to be ushered to the gangplank of the ship "Lady Sue".

Thank you for your consideration

@Noonan I'm very sorry to hear that. It would be naive of me to say, whilst I have been only skimming the RP that it hasn't had an effect on my choice.

I apologise if this had made you feel uncomfortable. If and when I run further PBP, I don't think I will allow RP in the recruitment thread.

I really liked the concept of Noonan, so it is with regret I accept your withdrawal and hope you find a place in a PBP elsewhere.

@Everyone. I will announce later today when I am back from work. (Aiming for 6pm GMT) All your sheets look fine from a cursory glance but if there is anything you may have missed please check one last time as I will check them again more thoroughly before making my final decision on the 6.

:(

Sorry to see you go, Noonan! And I'm sorry it's intimidating.

:/

In the future, if you like the idea of RP, but you don't want to be too talkative as a character, you could always post little things that Noonan (or whoever) does on occasion - small reactions to incidents, facial expressions, that sort of thing. Even if your character isn't naturally charismatic or likely to get into a given situation, you can still post your reactions to events. That way you get to have fun, but you don't have to be chatty!

You might not like that idea, and I can understand if you don't - that's totally fine - but I wanted to offer it, in case it helps in the future!

Peace, and I hope you have good gaming wherever you go!

EDIT: GM, did you ever weigh in on my armor (under Equipment, below) or traits (under... well... traits!)? I know you mentioned the cards/holy symbol - which is awesome, by the way! - but I don't see anything about those two elements. I'm presupposing those are fine, but I wanted to mention them one last time, just to be sure. For my spells, I replaced mage armor with shield - even if my current armor is disapproved, I'll stick with that choice because I'm going to be wearing armor anyway (I'll have a haramaki, if nothing else), and at 1 minute per level, it's got a pretty good duration. I think I've linked all my spells (including Summon Monster I under summoning mastery) and linked any special or specific rules. I linked to a couple of pictures of a mask, a scarf, and a banana-leaf cloak/poncho.

Looking at the dwarf who just bellowed at him, he readies himself to sprint... just in case.

"... I... see." he says, his voice a whole octave higher than it has been, though, to be fair, it's hard to hear, as it's quite soft and low right now. Still crouching, but now eyeing the dwarf warily, he scooches a ways away in a "subtle" gesture of nervousness at the dwarf's demeanor. "Subtle" in this case being roughly equal to a seagull landing on your platter. In the midst of a fine dinner.

Licking his lips, he smiles - well, he tries, and eventually gets one kind of nervously going - and, continues with the gambling thing.

"Ah-ah-ah, yes, well, r-right, let's... let's just continue along with the betting, yes? Shall we? Alright then. Yes." he says, putting on an air of civility, and calm.

The "calm" part fools roughly no one, but he works at it, nonetheless. He likes friends, not foes.

EDIT: for clarity and word-choice, as well as grammar. Silly grammar, always getting in the way of AWESOME.

it true thou I love RP, I don't really like to get to deep on a recruitment.

This being my first sea based character I played into it a bit but, for the most part to RP in a recruitment thread feels like a waist since you could get really invested to your character and in the end your not selected for the game...unless the GM in question wants a few responses to some RP samples they have posted then im all for that. But I have noticed very few GM's my self included take the RP from Recruitment as the main reason to have someone in their game.

with that really hope to get into this game I have always wanted to be part of a Nautical game ^_^

I guess my advantage is that Valaravas has been in two games already, so I have a good grasp of the Half-Orc cook quirks and preferences (cooking, booze, fighting, alchemy and woman, not necessarily in that order). ;)

That is why his profile has a level 5 crunch, for this adventure, the Level 1 version of Valaravans is: HERE

OK firstly sorry to anyone I didn’t get back to today I had an early start at work and it was a pretty full on day. Next a huge thank you to everyone who posted a character, I was truly amazed and the scope and depth of the cast of potential characters. I know it sounds like a cliché but it really was a tough decision.

Now the time you have been waiting for in no particular order the 6 characters selected are:
Mirandir Waverider - Oracle (Waves).
"Salty" Valaravans - Alchemist (beastmorph, vivisectionist).
Nayli Belequa - Warpreist.
Joan Porter - Ranger (Trapper, Freebooter).
Elenia Caledor - Wizard.
Morven Greigor -Skald (Dragon Skald, Totemic Skald).

Those of you not selected thank you once again, if I get any drop out I will PM you guys first.
I really hope you get a chance to use those characters because they were genuinely all great.
Many thanks
Judd

good luck and have fun everybody
