Age of Worms (Savage Worlds)

Game Master mikeawmids

The classic AP run using the fast, fun and furious Savage Worlds system.

I am looking for 4/6 players interested in playing the Age of Worms AP using the Savage Worlds game system from Pinnacle Entertainment. New characters should be Novice rank. Use of the Fantasy Companion is permitted. Savage Worlds is not particularly well suited to dungeon crawls, so the AP will be streamlined into a series of pivotal set pieces, rather than arduous jaunts through monster-infested underground mazes. This will have no impact on roleplay opportunies, which I hope to encourage.

Recruitment on a first come, first serve basis.

All characters should be local to the Diamond Lake region. This is an isolated mining community some distance away from the bustling Free City. You should be sufficiently down on your luck to consider raiding an old burial mound outside of the town limits. You were all raised in Diamond Lake and were good friends of a young boy called Alastor Land, who disappeared 10+ years ago. You are now given the opportunity to find out what happened to your old friend and maybe make a little gold along the way.

Please post character concepts below if interested. :D

Bumping for interest.

bump!

C'mon, this campaign has got it all! Domesticated owlbears! Necromancers! Doomsday Cults! Lizardfolk! Face-stealing assassins! Gladiatorial combat!

... and that's just the first half! :D

I would be all over this like mylee cyrus on construction tools if it was a system I owned. If I can find pdfs of savage worlds I can afford I might break down and buy them just for this. Got a lot on my plate at the moment, so learning a new game probably isn't the smartest move right now...

Bah! Savage Worlds is very easy to pick up and play. Describe your character idea and I'll stat it up, if you like. :)

I would be down for that. Anything in particular about the system that makes things different than pathfinder? Is it skill based or class based? What I'd like to do, depending on how well it'll work, is run a sneaky magic user. Something akin to a failed performing magician. Better at the mechanics of the tricks than he is the showmanship of performing. Someone that could easily end up working for someone like Smenk.

On that note I'm pretty familiar with at least the first couple adventures. Been slowly converting it to Pathfinder for years now.

Skill/Trait based gameplay. You roll whatever die has been bought in the relevant skill, plus an extra d6 (wild die) and pick the best result. Rolling the best possible number on a die (so 4 on a d4, 6 on a d6, etc) allows you to keep rolling, these are called exploding dice.

I started up a character based on your last post, a human conman/magician.

Agility: d6
Smarts: d6
Spirit: d6
Strength: d6
Vigour: d6

Pace: 6"
Charisma: +1
Parry: 5 (1)
Toughness: 5
Power Points: 10

Edges: Arcane Background (spellcasting), Charismatic (+2 charisma)

Hindrances: Habit (gambling, -1 charisma), Wanted (minor, for confidence tricks in the Free City), Quirk (flair for the dramatic), Poverty (start with half normal gold)

Skills: Athletics (swimming & climbing rolled up together): d6, Fighting: d4, Gambling: d4, Knowledge (stage magic): d6, Lockpicking: d4, Notice: d6, Persuasion: d8, Stealth: d6, Streetwise: d4, Spellcasting: d6, Taunt: d4

Gear: Swordcane (STD + d4, Parry +1, concealed weapon), Lockpicks, Stage Equipment

Powers: Legerdemain (for tricks), Boost/Lower Trait (for gaining an unfair advantage) and Obscurement (for quick getaways)

This is just a suggestion, feel free to tinker. :)

When you roll a skill check is it just the skill dice or is it skill+one of the attributes? Seems similar to the memories I have of withdrawn from way way long ago, though I'm pretty sure you totaled things there.

Only tweaked I would make to the character is maybe a little less conman and a little more skill based. Someone who would likely be able to pull off fairly intricate slights with cards and coins and whatnot, but wouldn't think to put any sort of flourish or mystery to the trick. Maybe some sort of tinker skill or something to represent crafting the gaffs of some tricks.

Assuming this gets up and going what sort of posting frequency would you prefer?

Also, what sort of tech level are we looking at? Firearms?

Will revise skills tomorrow.

Posting frequency: daily.

Firearms: blackpowder weapons are about as sophisticated as it gets.

Fraust: Test Drive Rules here

It's actually playable with just that free PDF, though there's not much depth.

I'll be rolling a char for this. Or building one.

Would you like me to mention the thread in the other SW campaigns I'm in?

That would be dynamite! Thanks! :D

Ok interested.
Not sure about character concept yet, gonna read about Diamond Lake a bit for inspiration.

Awesome thanks for the link.

Assuming there is character creation rules in that (haven't looked at it yet) I'll build a character and post it here soon.

Character creation rules are included in the Test Drive rules, thanks for posting Sai Ling. Remind me to give you an extra Benny when we start. :)

I'm itching for some Savage Worlds, so I think I'll throw my hat in the ring. Any special rules on how many points we have for attributes and skills, or limits on Edges and Hindrances? I noticed the character you posted for Fraust has more Hindrances than are usually allowed by the baselines (1 Major, 2 Minor, I believe).

Standard creation, novice rank. I added an additional hindrance for flavour, no extra points granted.

I’d be interested in playing also. I'm thinking a son of the baker in town. He's led a pretty sheltered life so he's Clueless (Major Hindrance) as well as Obuse (Minor) and Loyal (Minor). Amazingly for someone his size, he's actually quite stealthy which he's used for years to sneak treats for himself and his friends. He's even gotten skilled at opening locks. He started by sneaking a few pence from his father's lockbox but now his friends bring him locks just to see if he can puzzle them out. So one of his edges will be the Thief professional edge. I'll work up the whole character profile later today or tomorrow.

Liberty's Edge

I'd be interested in this if this didn't involve learning a new system. =/

We now have enough players to make a start. :D

IC/OOC threads will appear shortly. Pleas post characters here ASAP. Thanks.

Here's the information for Jack Greyfeather...

Hindrances: Clueless (major, -2 common knowledge), Obese (minor, Obese hero adds 1 to his Toughness, but his Pace is decreased by 1 and his running die is a d4), Loyal (minor, This character can never leave a man behind if there’s any chance at all he could help.)

Cool beans, those two novice characters both check out.

Have posted IC/OOC threads.

Folks, our GM has started the game thread :)

Indeed I have, apologies if last post was unclear. :D

Awaiting characters for the three other interested players.

Will open these slots up for recruitment again if interest has waned.

Not going to have the time I thought I would, sorry to flake on you. I've been dying to play in AoW though, so if you're still looking for people in a week (should have everything ironed out by then) I'll have a character ready.

You are still waiting on me? Sorry, I've been in a bit of a rut as far as actually getting a character together goes. Haven't been able to settle on a concept yet. I'll try and get something together today.

Yikes...you don't waste time do you :)
OK, I'll try to get a character in today or this evening.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I love me some SW, but I've already played through this, Rise of the Runelords, and Second Darkness...so I guess I'll pass this time.

How long did your run take?

Took a lot of thinking and trying to figure out just what I wanted, but here's Loup's submission: Azander Blanche, the famous Warrior of the White Wolf... at least, he was famous a few decades ago. Now he's an old man who talks about his days adventuring (which some of the townsfolk believe he did, and many don't) and hopes to go on one final grand quest before he dies. Despite his age, he's still a fine swordsman, and he's got a few tricks up his sleeves as well.

Considering the age discrepancy, it wouldn't make sense for you to have been a childhood friend of Alastor Land. Perhaps you retired to Diamond Lake, or took a position with the watch? Perhaps you opened your own fencing/swordplay academy and it didn't do as well as you would have liked, forcing you to supplement your income with some dangerous dungeon crawling? Maybe you were bought out or sabotaged by Smenk (much as he did with Alison Land's farm) in order to buy your school for a fraction of its real value.

All just ideas! You tell me how you want to incorporate your character into the story. :D

Derp. Totally forgot about the Alastor Land thing. I'm thinking Azander retired from adventuring and returned to a town he visited years ago with his old party, when they were investigating something to do with some sort of Wind elementals or something? He doesn't remember, it's been a while, and that was never really his thing. (This from some brief searching of Diamond Lake online to learn a tad more about the setting; my only experience with Age of Worms was a very brief game on these boards that ended shortly after entering the Cairn.)

In town, he's lived primarily off of his reputation (which has gone downhill since most folks don't believe his wild tales of adventure, and those that do have gotten tired of his "freeloading" and such) and his gold from adventuring. He briefly tried opening an academy, but it didn't garner much attention and few students showed promise, so he's taken to just giving pointers to kids with sticks and giving a good smack to any ruffians who pick a fight with the wrong geezer.

I imagine he's a bit of a curiosity to the children of town, since he's been there for a couple decades at least and he's always told stories of wild escapades and adventures and such, and he occasionally shows them some of the trophies he keeps in his small house near the edge of town. He's simultaneous a funny old man who tells neat stories and smells weird, and a bit of a scary fellow who sometimes gets a strange look in his eye when he recounts events and can go off on wild tangents.

He probably remembers Alastor Land, at least in a general way. "Nice enough boy. Listened attentively, always interested in the stories. Not like that Darren Fletcher, now that one, I always knew he'd turn out bad..." That sort of thing.

Cool beans. Please have a benny for investing in your character's history. Please jump into the story whenever you feel like it. Things are moving pretty slowly right now, hopefully the pace will pick up once everyone has posted their characters (fingers crossed).

A suggestion for getting into the thick of things: you were expecting a visit from several young men to refine their technique with the sword, you find them in the crows gathered around the Emporium - which is where Jack and Arial currently are, on their route to Greyfeather Bakery with Alison Land and all her stuff.

Actually, it would be nice if every PC had a link to one of the main NPCs in the campaign. If nothing else, it gives them a reason to get involved in what's going on in Diamond Lake. Considering your advanced age, Allustan Neff seems the best bet. Perhaps you were adventuring companions in your youth? Let me know what you think. :)

I think he seems a good choice. They probably spent several years together killing monsters, looting dungeons, saving townsfolk, and other such activities. It's likely the group went their separate ways eventually, you know how it is. Intra-party conflict, they all got sick of Azander's cigars maybe, things happen.

Opening up 1-2 slots for this game. Posting frequency at least once per day, though we sometimes manage more. Please post if interested in joining game.

Tell your friends! :p

Still interested, just RL been really really busy. I'll try to get a profile done up in the next day or so.

Excellent...it's a lot of fun so far even though the other players are much better at narrative than I am ;)

Opening recruitment for two additional players. Novice characters using standard SW creation rules. If you want to play but are unfamiliar with the system, the others players and I will be happy to help. :D

Still looking for more players! :D

Liberty's Edge

*grumble*

Do you have material somewhere that I can look through?

LOL....once again...still interested, will try to get a profile together soon :)

You still want players? I already own several of the Savage Worlds books and have most of the gross details for game play hammered out. Some finer points may escape me (ie alertness does it add +2 to just the skill or to the wild die as well. I've seen it go either way in campaigns I've seen).
