background:
Deep in the south of Riku'Ki was the ancient stronghold of the Tsume. There is no castle, but a small compound houses a modest school that focuses on a style of swordsmanship developed by the catfolk that live in the dense, hot jungles. Sasayaku grew up studying the jian under the strict instruction of Tsume Suiryoku. When her training reached a point where she was deemed worthy to represent the Tsume style, she was sent to spend a year living as a ronin. She wore a robe of green and grey as she travelled the countryside, learning the different customs of the towns she came to, coming to understand the different peoples of the land. She defended herself when she had to, and fought alongside those whose cause seemed righteous to her.

When her year was finished, she returned to the jungles of her home, to find the compound abandoned. Instead of swearing fealty to Tsume Suiryoku, she was alone in the world, not just as a part of her training, but in truth. She searched for clues for a long time, living wild when she had no coin, but unable to discover the truth. All she found was a beautifully forged jian with her name stamped on the blade, wrapped in silk and leather. It was hidden high in a tree that she had loved to climb.

For a time, she fell in with a group of bandits who harried caravans that passed through the jungle on the way from Riku'Kaze to the coast. They told her they only robbed from the merchants whose greed had gone beyond the bounds of fairness, but when she saw them stealing from peasants and small traders alike, she demanded they stop. They refused, and she put her teaching to the test, managing to kill several before the rest fled.

When she recovered from her injuries, she determined that she needed to find honorable work. She put aside the puzzle of the disappearance of her school and teacher, and set off for where ever the adventure begins.

appearance:
Sasayaku is a black catfolk, lean and athletic, with glittering green eyes. She bears several white scars from fights, and is generally smiling. She wears her kusari manchira and loose pants that allow maximum flexibility. She wears a sash around her waist, with her sword tucked through it. Even sheathed, it is apparent that this is not the standard katana, and she is a bit sensitive about it.

personality:
She's very friendly, relaxed and easy to get along with, but only to a point. She is proud, and she is, by the standards of this land, a bit reckless. She values virtue over duty, and sometimes even chooses what is right over what is honorable. Despite these flaws, she is a charming lady and has proved herself a skilled swordswoman. For these reasons, some Lords have found themselves able tolerate her eccentricity. She avoids alcohol, for she finds it makes her remember too many things she would rather forget.

The Exchange

Is it wrong that I really want Wandering Crane to speak in the third person? Something about his story makes me want to imagine a placid monk talking about himself as some "other" entity, I dunno why.

Silver Crusade

Wandering crane is strong. Wandering crane wishes for food now. Wandering crane is so enlightened, he is separate from his body.

Ah, thanks Kimiko, I was wondering why so many people had similar scores :P.

Acceptances close tomorrow. Lots and lots of good entries, will be very difficult to winnow it down. Sooner is obviously better as you want the current players to have time to look it over, since they get input.

If you are interested, those who aren't selected, I can put you on a short list, and contact when there is an opening. Unfortunately, life on the PBP has taught me that if we have 6 to start, we'll be down one or two within a few weeks or months (although I've lost a couple of people within a week of starting).

The fluffy bits, re-fluffed for maximum fluffiness:
Background: There are many legends of dragons in Ren'shan. One such legend is the tale of Di Yu, a mighty underworld dragon with claws of adamantine and breath of flame, who lived in a cave beneath the village of Rekka in Riku'Hi. In return for Di Yu's protection from evil spirits, bandits, and monsters, the villagers of Rekka offered up vast amounts of gold, gems, and sacrificial maidens to sate the dragon's lust. After generations of this extortion, a wandering wise man came upon Rekka and witnessed the offering of a maiden to Di Yu. Disgusted by what he had seen, the wise man gathered up those willing to help and hatched a plan to deceive the dragon. The maiden was rescued and Di Yu trapped in his cavern, buried under tons of rock; and yet, his seed was carried back to Rekka within the girl. Though the village would soon be ravaged by earthquakes, the people of Rekka would live on, dispersed across Riku'Hi.

Only a scant few today know that there is truth to this legend of Di Yu. The underworld dragon's blood has been passed down through the rescued maiden's family line, as have the dreams of a strange, handsome man with cinders billowing from his mouth whispering messages of vengeance. Lingfeng Shangguan is one of those few, as she carries the blood of Di Yu within her veins. It is to this unique ancestry that she owes her curious power over heat and flame, as well as her powerful force of will.

Some would call Lingfeng a troublemaker; she prefers to think of herself as a noble xia, a wandering force for good. Raised in a happy family by understanding and nurturing parents who own a small roadside inn, Lingfeng was never satisfied with the life of a simple villager. Inspired by tales of heroic wanderers and their lofty ideals, she constantly butted her head into village troubles, punishing local bullies and ne'er-do-wells by singing their robes with the strange flames she commanded. This unsolicited "help" often brought her family more trouble than it was worth and made her a target for retribution, but in Lingfeng's mind, she had upheld the ideals of law and order. Eventually, after a particularly nasty incident that left one of their inn's seedier patrons badly burned after groping a waitress, Lingfeng decided to spare her family any further dishonor and take her show on the road. Now she wanders Ren'Shan, going wherever her feet carry her, looking for problems to solve and people in need of aid, hoping to someday stumble across some particularly noble cause to dedicate herself to. Although not of the strongest mind in the land, she has picked up a few languages along the way, hoping to master the tongue of dragons so that she might better understand the intentions of her progenitor.

Personality: Lingfeng is headstrong to a fault, often reckless, inserting herself into situations that most folk might say she has no business with; her desire to mete out justice and enforce her particular interpretation of "the law" is so great that it frequently overrides her common sense. Although she certainly can be pig-headed and as stubborn as an ox, her intentions are noble, and she is both friendly and surprisingly forgiving, should someone who has wronged her seek to atone in some way. For one so mindful of law and order, she has a surprisingly poor grip on manners and is bad at dealing with authority figures, who she treats exactly the same as anyone else. This can cause her to be quite uncouth, whatever her intentions might be.

Appearance: Lingfeng is of slightly above-average height, with a slight tan and black hair that hangs to chin-length. She has pleasant features, her most notable feature being her dramatic, sharp eyebrows that somewhat resemble the curved edge of a sword. Thanks to her draconic heritage, her eyes have an orange tinge to them that increases to a near-glow when she uses her powers. She usually dresses in fine, flowing red robes to reflect her birthplace in Riku'Hi, and when traveling often wears a favorite wide-brimmed straw hat to keep the sun out of her eyes (and, as she claims, to "aide in maintaining her excitingly mysterious persona").

Just dropping by to drop off Kaeru Shida a Grippli Wild/Cross-blooded Sorcerer using Empyreal and Sylvan as his bloodlines to create a 'Kami-blessed' bloodline. All of Shida's spells are specifically chosen to focus on interactions with spirits, save for Snowball, which is just an incredibly fun spell.

Like the swashbuckler, I took the liberty of transforming my 'rapier' into a wakizashi. It's still a rapier, statistically, though I paid the wakizashi's price. Shida also has a Giant Frog as an animal companion, who also functions as his spirit guide.

Each has their own character sheet, located here for Shida and here for Kero. Hopefully you guys enjoy the spirit-blessed kami-touched grippli from Mizu'ki! :)

Applications are now closed. Thank you all for a lot of very very good submissions. If you are not selected, please let me know if you'd like to be contacted as a backup if/when someone drops out. I'll be contacting people in the order they requested to be on the backup list, so earlier is better.

Existing players (PirateDevon, Gavmania, and John Hathaway), please get me your preferences from the submissions by Noon Sunday (CST) and I'll announce final selections tomorrow night and we'll work out getting everyone together as a group.

Locked Slots
PirateDevon - Xú Yanyeeku's - Kitsune Skald (Spell Warrior)

Hotaru of the Society - Kaeru Shida - Crossblooded Sorcerer

Ah blast, I thought I had more time to do my backstory. I imagine that rules me out instantly, and if so, I'd love to be considered as a backup.

You can still get your backstory in, but it probably hurts you some. Faster is better.

I am not on that list. Did I make a mistake somewhere?

*shakes in anticipation*

Hotaru of the Society wrote:

Dunno what you're talking about, you're on the list.

It's not as though 'kittyface' would intentionally give you grief or anything is it? Whistles innocently

:p it was also possible I skipped an important step in the application process. Frogs aren't known for their ability to follow directions, after all. :)

Also... adding an easter egg to the sheet. :3

mdt wrote:

Ah okay, great, thanks. I just threw together what I had in mind. It's a bit faster than I'd have liked, but I think it gets the idea across.

I hope katsu isn't still thought of as too 1- demissional :3 while he has a very go with the flow /happy go lucky personality (which I love ) he certainly has his serious aspects.

shivering with antici-PAtion

Whew...very good entries, everyone, and hard for me to nail down to 3 that I'd like.

Given Zamu's background, and his brief to find the Hidden Masters to teach him the bow, Akio Ryuu Katsu is a shoo-in for me (and not just because of his connection to a hidden master). I also like Lingfeng Shingguan, Tsune Sasayaku, Shou Hei'an, and Dunja Hanna. Yes, I know that's more than 3, but they are all Soooo good.

ok, I don't believe in dedicated healers, but it would be useful to have someone who can use a wand of Cure light wounds, so I guess Dunja Hanna, and I think a dedicated Arcane, so Lingfeng Shingguan. Along with Akio Ryuu Katsu, those would be my 3 recommendations.

Edit: Just spotted Ecko's back story, haven't really had time to absorb it so I will refrain from comment for now, but it may make me change my mind once I have thought about it.

I think the addition of your summary did a great deal in helping me understand how you intended your character to be perceived.

Anything you feel I should work on, Gav? I figure that if anyone does drop down the line (and your decisions wind up being the final ones) I can update things, and advice is always welcome. :)

*whispers* pst, I have a +10 to my UMD checks ;) /pst

The Exchange

So many good apps, hard to pick. Good luck everybody.

Well, now I feel depressed and sad that my character didn't make the short list... I hope the DM at least likes her... maybe I can at least be considered for a replacement if someone drops...

The Exchange

Well for what it is worth I don't think there was a bad app among the lot, I might be biased in this because I know and play/have played with some of the applicants but this was one of the harder recruitments I've been party to...and I say that as just one of the players, I don't envy mdt in this.

Well I can only hope you found my submission unique enough to select me. But everyone is right, there are some very interesting submissions!
Best of luck my fellow petitioners.

Just waiting for John Hathaway's feedback. Once I have it, I'll make a decision. If I don't get it by tonight, I'll go with the two I have.

Well I can always hope John likes Kimiko, lol... but mdt, things don't look good for me - please put me on the list of hopefuls for an opening down the line if someone drops out.. willing to redesign as needed depending on party needs.

Aye, best of luck to everybody. I know how hard it can get to pick a final party when you have so many great applicants to choose from.

Kimiko wrote:

Don't be. I really wanted a Mikobito in, it's so flavorful and I put you and deleted you a few times from the short list. In the end I had to shorten it somehow, and that is the only reason you got dropped; not in any way because it was "bad" (There were no bad applications), and the final decision was almost arbitrary - I so wanted the Dhampir, and the Catfolk Ronin, and the Mikobito...and...and...Just so many great stories. Truth is, whoever we end up with I won't be disappointed, and Just because I didn't choose you, doesn't mean you won't make the final cut.

oh... thanks Gavmania - I feel a lot better now, whether I make it or not... I still hope I do, but if I don't, no hard feelings... thanks for your encouraging comments!

Still and all - good luck to all who applied! and Good Gaming to all!

The anticipation is killing Me. (Seriosuly, I think I'm on my 6th life now.)

Don't worry so much for Kimiko. I think your story's great. Also, Mikobito seem very interesting. I think your odds are just fine. :)

Man, I hate it when I get so many good submissions. I have to turn someone down, and this was a massively good submission fest.

But, I've narrowed it down. I ended up taking 4 instead of 3. Mainly I did that because I've had a bad experience lately with games starting with 5 or 6 and dropping to 3 in a few months. Mostly that's new posters dropping out. Occassionally it's people who have been here awhile having massive things in life. Sadly one poster was in an accident. :(

Anyway, for those who weren't picked, please let me know if you want to be on the short list for replacements (it might not be so short, I did this in my last recruitment, and called up a person off the replacement list 2 weeks later).

The way I finally did it was this : There were 3 people who had at least 2 votes from the 3 existing players, so those 3 got in. The rest all had one vote or no votes, and even the ones with no votes had votes, in that at least two people told me they couldn't decide amongst the ones they didn't list they were so good. For the fourth, I picked someone who used one of my custom races to allow me to do some debugging, and also because, like everyone, they had a good backstory.

So, with no further ado...

Lingfeng, Human Dragon Bloodline Sorcerer
Dunja Hanna - Shaman/Samurai (speaker of the past)/sword saint)
Tsume Sasayaku, Catfolk Swashbuckler
Kimiko Asami - Mokobito Shaman/Investigator

You have been selected. I'll post a game link here shortly, after I create one. Once everyone has checked in, we'll get started.

Again, thanks to all for all the awesome submissions, and all are welcome to put in for the short list. If you do, please save your crunch and backstory if you made an alias, even if it's just spoilered in it, to avoid having to recreate. Thanks again.

*does the Snoopy happy dance* THank you mdt... thanks so much>... I am SO excited to be picked for this game... I love the concept and am very much looking forward to the game start!

welp, there goes my 8th life. I'll try and keep alive until called upon as replacement (if ever). Until then, I shall mope about in shame and disappointment. To those that got in congrats! le sigh.

I'll take that as a 'put me on the list' and that makes you #1 on the list unless I missed a post by someone else Akio. I really did like the concept. Man this was tough.

I'll be here. :) You know where to find me if you need a frog. :)

Congrats to everyone else. :)

Well I guess I went too exotic with my choice. Please add me to the stand-by list. If I even got a vote that is lol
Have fun everyone. Now I just need to find out what to do with another profile. :-)

All right! I'll whip up an alias. Congrats to the rest of the gang that made it in, and to those who didn't, well, I would have loved to play along with any of you (here's lookin' at you, Shou Hei'an!). Allons-y!

You got a vote Shou, so you're on the list. Along with Hotaru.

And I didn't think you were too out there, your character fits right in. There was just a ton of competition, and all of it good. I really did like your background.

Ok. Thanks. Was not sure the concept was too much. Best of luck mdt. Always had fun playing with you guys (hi pirate Devon!)

Glad I managed to make it in, I imagine it was quite close given the other submitted characters.

I look forward to playing with you guys.

Congrats to those who got in! Please keep me on the list of possible replacements as well,

Checking in. Thanks to heavenly GM for ... yeah, I'll save it for the game.

If Kimiko and Tsume could check in over in the discussion thread, it would be appreciated. We're waiting for your input.
