I have been using lots of music to create the atmosphere and mood of this weird fantasy/sci-fi adventure. The usual whole Wagner-esque epic battle fantasy music really doesn't fit right at all.

For me, the feeling is very much of lost technology and weird glimpses into a future that never really came true. I've been digging lots of synth, particularly John Carpenter. Judas Priest's famous track 'Hellion/Electric Eye' is also a must-listen.

Here are some of the music recommendations I've been using so far:

Com Truise - In Decay (fuzzed out 70s/80s synth)
Com Truise - Galactic Melt (not as strong as In Decay but still cool as hell)
Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children (very haunting and perfect)
John Carpenter - Lost Themes (great for battles)
Perturbator - I Am The Night (a little too many verbal breaks but still great)
Syndicate Wars OST (So dark and sad, I'm going to use this for Starfall and put the city in perpetual night)

As always, support the musicians by buying their amazing work on iTunes or ordering their albums.
Do you have any Iron Gods music recommendations?

Very good! I think Bladerunner soundtrack could also fit into this theme nicely. Going to make a playlist just for Iron Gods based off this.

I'm playing the Guardians of the Galaxy score in the background of my game. I don't bother with changing the music during play unless it becomes distracting, so it just plays on a loop. Might add some stuff I have from Overclocked Remix to lengthen the playlist though.

Ive never really used music, you just play it on low in the background or play things at specific times?

Ive tried doing the 'play certain music at certain times' thing, but what that adds is taken away by me fumbling for the track I want. So now I just play it low in the background on a loop. Now once Syrinscape gets to where you can add your own files, I will definately be checking that out. I'd like to now in fact, but money is very tight for me right now. If you want to know more about Syrinscape, their website is syrinscape.com.

And no, I am no way involved with or paid by Syrinscape. I just think its a really cool program.

Yeah it looks good. I think I'll try the music thing and see how it goes.

Bladerunner soundtrack is amazing. <3 Vangelis.
Yeah, I play it low in the background in certain areas. For instance 'Music has the Right to Children' in the buried giant. Never play anything with vocals, it takes folks out of the game.

I'll echo the lyrics comment, but add the caveat that chanting or low background vocals are ok, especially if they are in another language. As long as they serve to enhance the action as opposed to draw attention to themselves. Think "Duel of the Fates" from The Phantom Menace.

Nine Inch Nails The Downwards Spiral and Further down the Spiral are gonna get so much play for me:-)

Also Music for a Darkened Theater vol 2 by Danny Elfman for the creepy classical sounding stuff.

And of course Rancid, Danzig, The Distillers, L7, System of a Down, White Zombie, Rage Against the Machine and Badmotorfinger era Soundgarden for Scrapwall and wherever else it fits.

if anything i might have to run Iron Gods twice just so i can use all the music i want to use:-D

Tangerine Dream, their 1971 album Alpha Centauri and some of the music from the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio show may add to the mood, including A Modern Mass for the Dead (Requiem) by György Ligeti, [I]A Rainbow in Curved Air by Terry Riley, [I]Volumina by György Ligeti, Wind on Water by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band by Terry Riley, Cachaca by Patrick Moraz, Shine on You Crazy Diamond (intro) by Pink Floyd, sprach Zarathustra (intro) by Richard Strauss, Katakomben by Gruppe Between, Space Theme by Stomu Yamashta, Oxygène by Jean Michel Jarre, Over Fire Island by Eno (with Fripp), Miracles of the Gods by Absolute Elsewhere, Mikrophoniet by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Melodien by György Ligeti, The Engulfed Cathedral by Isao Tomita, and Volkstanz by Gruppe Between.

Add "Journey of the Sorcerer" by The Eagles (from One of Those Nights). It was the song used for the theme of the BBC radio version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's got kind of an old-west-sci-fi vibe; and the lead instrument is a banjo.

Bits and pieces of the original soundtrack to Tron from 1982 by Wendy Carlos are pretty great. Case in point would be "Scherzo".

Another good one would be "Neon Skyline/Lost Chronicles" by the British space-rock band Hawkwind (from their 1988 album The Xenon Codex).

I'm about to run the final battle in LoR, inspired by/shamelessly robbed from Solomani's work (link in spoiler for spoilery reasons)

Spoiler:
https://itsmygamemyrules.wordpress.com/2015/03/23/boss-fight-hellion-2-0/

Are any of the above tracks particularly great for that boss's playlist, rather than just the tracks that are generically good?

Spoiler:
I expect the fight to last almost the whole session, and I know it's impossible to keep the energy up for that long, but I've built a freaking set for this encounter, so I really wanna go all out with the mood! It's set in a cavern, against a robot, on top of a giant excavator machine.

It all depends on your musical preference of course, but here are some tracks that might be good for a boss encounter in IG:

Perturbator-Raining steel

Deus EX: human revolution-Hyron(Final boss theme)

Fate Zero OST-The battle is to the strong (extended)

Extreme Music - Combat Ready (Epic Hybrid Action Rock)

Something random I found on youtube

The Enigma TNG - Industrial Killing Machine

Abducted by sharks-Siege engine

Judas priest-Painkiller (instrumental version)

Carpenter brut-Turbo killer

Farcry 3: Blood dragon-Warzone

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

I was reading my notes for the game today, and I was browsing trough my soundtrack album in spotify. Then this gem came along, and my mind went straight to Iron Gods. I will use this in my future campaign for sure.

This gem being the soundtrack for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

I can already hear some of the tracks playing in my mind when I'm reading the books.

Spoiler:
"Brothers in Arms-" track? Lords of Rust, and specifically when they attack the fortress of Hellion. It just feels right.

Music in an AP has become the norm with my regular RPG group. It can set the right tone you want to portray and makes moments quite cinematic. It also gives players a certain drive with their characters and helps combat go faster when waiting for your turn.

I've used quite a few different songs so far in Iron Gods. The sci-fi genre opens so many doors. My list used so far is as follows:

Torch Theme - Welcome to Lunar Industries, Moon OST
Inside Chrysalis - Dead Space Theme
Fighting skeleton kasathas - space pirates theme, Metroid Prime
Fighting robots to save Khonnir - Keys to the Kingdom (instrumental) Linkin Park
Meyanda - I am Machine - Three Days Grace
Torch is saved - Guardians of the Galaxy theme
Fighting the Smilers - Take Out the Gunman, Chevelle
Scrapwall - Phazon Mines, Metroid Prime
Helskarg - Driving with the Top Down, Iron Man OST
Infiltrating the Lords of Rust - Lemurian Star, Captain America: The Winter Soldier OST
Kulgara - Lights Out, Breaking Benjamin
Hellion - Kill Everybody, Skrillex
Iadenviegh - Kakariko Village, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Aurora - Unauthorized Entry, Elysium OST
Seerath - Battling Robots, Robo Cop OST
The Choking Tower - World War Z theme
Furkas Xoud - The Necromorphs Attack, Dead Space
Thought Harvester - Omega Pirate Battle, Metroid Prime
Scar of the Spider - Into the Wasteland, Fallout 3
The-Stars-Whisper - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, Skrillex
Fungal Caves - Humanity Pt. 1, The Thing OST
Dominion Hive - Title + USCSS Nostromo, Alien OST
Maukui - Ascendancy, Halo 4
Dweller-in-Dark-Places - metroid prime battle, Metroid Prime
Starfall - Heaven and Earth, Elysium OST

I'm also planning on using songs from Oblivion, Deadpool, Tron: Legacy, and The Matrix. There are several other songs I've used that I can't remember. And you can probably tell I'm a fan of the Metroid series.

I like the previous suggestions, especially Blade Runner and Mad Max: Fury Road. I'll have to listen to those soundtracks and see where I can fit them into the last two books in the AP!

I've been using the soundtracks from the Borderlands games in the Iron Gods group I just started running. They have a great mix of pseudo-western and Sci Fi elements that fit really well, and some great combat tracks as well.

Silver Machine by Hawkwind
Assimilate by Skinny Puppy
Rotorblade by Juno Reactor
Alien Intruder by Synaesthesia
