Golarion Mumble - Change Conversation

Greetings, folks. We've received more than enough donations to bump the Golarion mumble to 75 users. On the other hand, we've also received some advice that we'd get more bang for our buck by using the money to purchase time on a virtual server and install our own murmur server (mumble's underlying engine). That would allow us to set our own limits, and simply pay for additional processor power and bandwidth as needed, while still leaving the engine accessible to multiple people. It's even conceivable (I haven't checked) that we could run both Teamspeak and Mumble, so that groups with a preference one way or the other could use what works best for them.

For now, I'm holding the new money until we can have a conversation and the community reaches a preferred decision. I've requested that the existing time be shortened to convert to 75 users (haven't heard back yet) I'd like to hear from anyone with facts or opinions one way or another.

I'm copying this from Goblinworks to avoid missing anyone, but would prefer that the conversation happen there.

great news!

If the politics debate stretches the capacity then there's a proven need. If not, we may not need more bang.

I see the value in having several groups on the same mumble server. Others may see the value in secrecy, but at current population levels and without settlement warfare, the benefits for trade, diplomacy and socializing strongly favour 'the one mumble', at least for all the small/independent groups.

@Cal, did Damis get a hold of you? I sent him your information, he can install anything you need.

Do you have an option to upgrade to 75 users for a month? You could do a short term upgrade for the time being, and then move over to a VSP later when you can find some down time to get it all setup.

I believe a separate Mumble and TS server would be counterproductive. It would be a splitting point in an effort to bring a unifying communication front.

The suggestion provided using the Virtual Server is what I believe we are doing at CotP (TEO) and seems to work well. I think the best idea is to look at what the biggest bang for our buck is because while donations are generous now, we have no idea what they will be in two years which may also need to support a growing base.

@Cheatle, I haven't heard from him yet. We have a large credit built up, so there is no rush, at the moment, we are covered for over a year at 75 users, and each time we increase it just shortens our remaining time. Unless we see explosive growth, we probably won't have to make a decision for months.

How do I adjust the name that appears in the Chat? I am currently Tyncale, but would like it to be [Callambea]Tyncale/Regalo

I am not registered, but when I try to do that it seems it wants to lock in that name? Can I change it later?

Thanks for any help. :)

Hi Tyncale, I'm not sure if you can, but I certainly can. If you aren't registered, the name should be part of the options in your server shortcut.

On the Menu: [Server] - [Connect]

Then right click on the shortcut to the mumble and select [Edit]

There you will see the name you entered when you created the shortcut. You should be able to change that.

If not, register with the server, and then either pm me or post here and I'll edit it.

Mumble will reject the "/' though, so you may need a slightly different name.

Thanks all, I changed it thanks to your help. There is indeed an edit button when you get that first pop-up window when you start it up. I had been looking in the menu's after I already was logged in.

[Callambea]Tyncale-Regalo it is.
