Switching characters in PFS (before reaching 2nd level)

Advice

What are the limits in this switch?

Can I change my characters name? Gender? Class? Race?

You can change every blessed aspect of your character before reaching 2nd level. But... If you play on the boards here for PbP, you can't change the name after 10 posts.

Okay, thanks.

I didn't know about playing on the boards here. My GM today encouraged me to play in more games so I'd be on a higher level (I played though a scenario today with a level 4 monk, level 2 sorcerer, and level 1 wizard).

Would these PbP games add to my actual experience? If so, that would be incredibly helpful.

Yes, PFS-style PbP (usually with Virtual Table Top VTT) games played on this site are valid for PFS. They count just like an in-person game. Same for games played online via voice chat and VTT. That's the beauty of PFS.

Yes

The only thing you can't change is the money/prestige you spent on consumables. You can swap out all your actual gear, but if you used 2 alchemist fires, you have to track that money as spent when you rebuild your character.

Slight correction, you can't change money spent on consumed consumables. If I buy an alchemist's fire at level one and don't use it that money is part of the free rebuild.

Can you change factions?

What happens to rewards granted from being of a certain faction?

You can change factions. I've never gotten a straight answer on what happens to rewards. I've been told both yes and no at different times.

Some players play Strong level 1 characters then change them completely at level 2. Some others play Pre-gens since they come with some gear on them. The first level of PFS is really not that important.

I remember helping you out with a reach fighter. That not work out for you?

Grand Lodge

I just finished my first session and have this ~500g reward. If I use that to give my character a mwk breastplate for the next session, is that fully refunded when I rebuild?

Edit: and where is the fine print and details of this rule?

Yes it can be fully refunded. Anything you haven't consumed, or used any charges from, can be resold for full value.

I ended up playing a Magus in my first game. It was fun, but I felt something was missing. The party had nobody who could wear armor, and it had no healers.

I want to play a character who is versatile and can step into multiple roles when needed. I plan on bringing this character to a couple of different gaming groups, so I want to create a character who is a welcome addition in different types of groups, even if there's another character of the same class at the table.

I think the ability to cast some kind of healing is most important for me. After that, I want to be able to contribute in most situations. Dominating isn't necessary. I want to be able to contribute in combat, but full BAB isn't needed. Knowledge and/or social skills would be a boon.

I've narrowed my choices down to the following classes:

Cleric (they can heal and tank)
Paladin (tank, heal, high CHA)
Oracle (heal, high CHA)
Inquisitor (still learning about these guys)
Bard (social skills, healing, I'd probably use him as an archer)

I figure I have two sessions to really figure out what I want to play, then I'm going to stick with it.

My love of Dwarves is having me lean towards Clerics. :P

I gave you a good paladin build in your first thread. Plenty of healing, tanking, and diplomacy for out of combat. With your high cha and UMD you will be loved in a group. Just lead by example and dont be a bible thumper.

If you play dwarf you can grab steel soul feat for even better saves.

Thank you for redirecting me towards that build.

Now that I understand the rules a little better, I'm realizing I really dig this build.

With UMD on a high CHA Paladin, liberal use of wands almost transforms him into a Fighter/Mage type (you kids call them "gish" now, right? - haha).

Do Paladins have any bonuses or drawbacks on their choice of deity? Or is it pretty much flavor?

Grand Lodge

There alignment is lawful good they can worship any diety LG, LN, and NG. I like shalyn myself cause she is the god you can play a peace and love hippie paladin lol.

And yes we call them gish.

Grand Lodge

Based off of the old Githyanki, I presume?

Anyway, to avoid faction switching issues, is there any drawback from switching the Observant trait with Eyes and Ears of the City trait?

Grand Lodge

I've never heard of a gish...

If you're switching at level 1, it really shouldn't matter.

This mechanic however wasn't given out with the idea that you should be planning ahead to abuse or otherwise "game" it. It was intended for people either made honest mistakes or discovered that they really did not like what they had initially built.

If cheesing this becomes too common, campaign leadership may decide to rescind this particular grace.

Grand Lodge

That makes sense.

I asked because there was a trait that was suggested to me. Unfortunately, it's a trait from a faction I'm not a part of.

Fortunately, I found a different trait with the exact same benefit, and it fits the character concept.

Besides, I like the idea of a Paladin of Shelyn as a member of the Dark Archives. It works: maintaining order is a big part of the faction, and many powerful items are beautiful works of art.

Even evil artifacts are better kept in safe keeping where no one will use them. If they're under our protection, these items won't fall into the wrong hands. :)
