[PFS] Weapon options for a Shaman or Hunter

Advice

Sovereign Court

Hi all,

I'm trying to build the spiritual successor to one of my veteran PFS characters. While finding thematically appropriate options is easy, figuring out what to do with them in combat is a bit trickier. That's where I could really need your help, but I'm open to broader suggestions about classes/archetypes I didn't consider.

The "parent" character is an Elven Ranger, focused on archery and fighting demons. The character ended up going into the Mammoth Rider prestige class, partly for OOC reasons (ranger was boring in early teens), partly IC (connecting to a particular event in the meta plot). Character was not particularly devout, but was especially close to followers of Cayden, Shelyn, and Iomedae.

So far, the two standout options for a successor character are the Mammoth Shaman or the Divine Hunter (most likely of an Empyreal Lord to be determined later). Elf/half-elf would be first choice for race, though that's flexible.

For both of these options, though, I'm stumped on what path to take them down weapon/combat-wise, perhaps because I've seen very little of either class in action. Id like to avoid the 2 handed weapon route, as I already have a couple of those (including one reach build). My only 3/4 bab melee type is a Dervish Dance Investigator. Would either work as a Weapon and Shield build? TWF? Martial spellcasting (maybe focusing on touch spells)? Whatever it is doesn't need to be optimized, but being able to contribute meaningfully to combat is important.

Thanks!

Well Shaman's are not proficient with shields so and have 3/4 BAB so TWF would be a little too feat intensive. Your best best for the Mammoth Shaman would be just to use a longspear at least for the AoO's but you can use your Spirit Power as a nifty combat option as long as you have a decent Charisma score.
