Pretty sure I already know the answer to this one since it seems like a clear-cut case of the Golden Rule, but another player of my group was disputing how the "At this location" power worked with regards to the scenario, so I figured I'd post here to get some more opinions on this issue.

The scenario reads: "When you acquire an ally from a location deck, put it under this card." (with a reward being to get all of the allies under the scenario card).

Alehouse's at this location reads: "When you acquire an ally, you may recharge it and draw a card."

The Golden Rule states that Scenario text trumps Location text, so allies go under the scenario card instead of being acquired into the hand or recharged. However, I believe that in this case you are still allowed to draw a card despite being unable to recharge it. In other words, the "recharge it" and "draw a card" are separate instructions. Therefore, you ignore the "recharge it" instruction but can still follow the "draw a card" instruction. The disagreement is about that interpretation, in that other members of my group thought that since the recharge and draw were mentioned in the same sentence without any punctuation separating them, that it is one instruction and thus since the recharge aspect is impossible, drawing a card is thus also not possible.

Thoughts?

I played it the same way as the other members of our group argued. To me, it is clear that the intent is that recharging the ally is the cost for drawing the card. Would it be better and more clear if it said, "recharge it to draw a card"? Maybe. When I told everyone that scenario trumps location, no one made the same argument that you are.

The question you should ask yourself is this: If the scenario rule wasn't there, would you think it would be okay to not recharge the ally you acquired and still draw the card? If you say no, then that conflicts with your interpretation of this situation. If you say yes, then that is a very interesting and literal was of interpreting the Alehouse location.

But who knows. Maybe I'm wrong about the intent of the location and you are allowed to keep the ally and still draw a card.

If the scenario wasn't there, you'd have an ally to recharge and thus that part of the text would not be impossible so the Golden Rule wouldn't have a chance to apply. Therefore, if you chose to use that power you'd recharge that ally and then draw a card (the "may" comes before both recharging the ally and drawing the card, so if you chose to exercise the power you would need to do both).

If it said "to draw a card", then yes I'd rule your way without question. However as-is I can see it both ways which is why I asked (although I'm still of the opinion that they are both listed as effects until told otherwise or there is strong consensus for your reading).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Since the Alehouse's recharge-and-draw is optional, you can't play as if you would have recharged it but oh-the-scenario-says-I-can't. If the "you may" weren't on the Alehouse, you might have a case.

No card draw for you!

Another clarification is needed about this scenario... it doesn't specify what ships you can choose as your ship. I'm assuming any Class 5 or lower like the previous scenario, but it should be spelled out on the scenario sheet.
