Finding An Invisible Object / Paralyzed Dude

Rules Questions

I'm curious—how do you set the Perception DC to notice a paralyzed person or inanimate object that has been rendered invisible?

Say an assassin paralyzes a guy, or needs to hide some evidence, so she invisibles him/it and tosses him/it behind some bushes. She then hides as the PCs show up and find...what?

Is it just that flat passive DC 20 check? It seems like it should be a good deal harder than that—maybe even impossible if you aren't right next to it.

While this is a rules question, I'm also open to how people would run it in their own games. Basically, what do the rules say, and what makes sense to you?

DC 40, I believe, is the Perception (20+20) for finding an invisible person standing still (such as being paralyzed). Probably the same for an object? I'd suggest it's probably up to GM discretion, but I'd have to brush off my rules-fu to know for sure.

I'd set the DC between 40 and 45.

Starting with a DC 0 Perception check to find an object in the open.
The rules on invisibility give a +20 for being invisible, and another +20 if you are not moving.
You have another +5 for being behind cover like a door. For your average bush I'd probably rule something a little less than that, depending on the size.

Unless the assassin is also invisible (or pretty high level), it would probably be easier for the PCs to locate them instead. If nobody stumbles over the body, it's going to stay lost until the invisibility runs out.

EDIT: If a PC does manage to make that (not sure what level they are in your scenario), I'd probably describe it as noticing a scent or faint tracks / broken twigs in the bush.

Boom, ^ that guy got it. :D

DC 40 plus the size modifier for the Person/object in question.

So, DC 56 to find an invisible key or gemstone. DC 48 for a cat. Anything bigger will be automatically discovered if you enter it's square (aka trip over/stub your toe on).

I might say something like "moving into the square gives a 100% of finding if Medium, 75% if Small, 25% if Tiny, 5% if smaller".

Of course, PCs generally don't specify what squares they're walking in when they announce they're searching, but I guess that adjudication is another thread on its own. Thanks, all!

Scarab Sages

Of course, if someone detects magic or better yet arcane sight, there will be an illusion aura coming from behind the bush, and from wherever the assassin is.

Or best yet See Invisibility :)

Or if they are looking for their missing friend/dude maybe they Track him to his location.
