Animal Ally

Rules Questions

Are we limited to the ones in the feat? Is there anyway to expand on the list? Just asking because I was thinking of taking the feat for a mount but the animals are small. With the exception of horse and camel which is a wee bit too boring.

I made a character last night (and totally forgot about Animal Ally) and took Skill Focus (Knowledge Nature), Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan), Ascendant Recollection, and Boon Companion, in order to get an animal companion of my level.

You can have the animal at third level this way (as a druid of level -4), and you can get the boon companion by 5th, I believe.

"Sylvan" is not a valid choice for Eldritch Heritage.

Ask your GM. Simple as that. Unless of course your playing PFS.

If it being too small is the only problem 7th level wolves are large. Undersized Mount could allow you a wider range of usable mounts as well.

Aw, dang!

Thanks for pointing that out :)

Yeah asking the GM is always an option but I was hoping for something else before I am forced to reach that point. Heh.

I previously hadn't looked at the feat closely enough to notice the list limitations. They're binding though, so if you want to get a mount for a Medium sized PC out of this you should probably either take the Wolf and wait until 7th level or consider the Undersized Mount feat. The small cat isn't a bad companion overall.

If you're OK with a Medium mount I think you could use Eldritch Heritage (Arcane) to get a familiar with the Mauler archetype. If you're very animal companion focused the Eldritch Heritage (Destined) feat can be nice for giving out hefty insight bonuses. Unfortunately you can't take multiple bloodlines with Eldritch Heritage.
