Domain familiars and improved familiar or similar?

Some cleric/Druid domains grant a familiar but a specific one. Can you get an improved familiar if you only have that kind of specific familiar?
Like the serpent domain granting a snake familiar?
And could that snake take the figment archetype?

Should be able to as long as you meet the right effective level for the familiar.

But the improved familair should probably still be "snake-like".

note that improved familiar requires "ARCANE caster level"...

Vrischika, it's an open question whether "effective wizard levels" (which the cleric has) count as "arcane caster level".

The consensus is that they do, but no FAQ yet. :(
