I had to stop GMing because I was laying out Faces of the Tarnished Souk in final form for Rite Publishing. I had to concentrate on the book, so I ran only a few RPs. Two of which were live on-line games with my live group using OpenRPG. I had little time to run the games I did have, and I did warn you all that I was doing this thing. Now, with the book off my chest, I can advertise for an online Campaign again, and I can run 2 forum games.

I'm re-opening an Eastern Fantasy game, only this time, I'll be using Fushigi Yûgi: The Curious Play as inspiration.

Although I'll be using the series as a source of inspiration, I won't be following the series exactly, but using it for plot points. No one has to make a pair of school girls drawn into an Ancient China fantasy land, for instance. However, the overall plot is simple.

The Setting: the Spring and Autumn Period of Ancient China.
The Characters: your characters will represent some of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This shows up in various ways. A tattooed sorcerer can have one of her Mage Tattoos show up as a representation of her Zodiac-Animal.

The Plot. Characters will have adventures while they realize their potential to stop a great evil that has been poisoning dragons and other powerful animals into evil beasts. The plot will also take some points from Morrowind. All of the PCs will be chosen for a Great Destiny, but one of them will be like the Neverarine (representing Suzaku, the Crane of the South).

The Evil? It's curious, isn't it? There are several evils I can use, but none of them will be like Tammerlaine.

Read this: wiki for creating your characters. And if you played in my last game, you're welcome to transpose your old characters over.

I am wondering how to combine Psion with dog.

Dogs have wonderful sense of smell, and . . . don't they bite too? You can be a Seer or Egoist, I can see it that simply.

I gotta say the idea of playing one of the Seishi sounds rather appealing. What kind of build guidelines should I use?

I also take it I can't play Nakago. Kinda hard to roleplay missing your stomach plug. :3

Okay, I really want to be in on this one. Please tell me more and I will have something for you by tonight!

If you are willing to do a bit of homebrew, I think that connection of a loyal psicrystal would be interesting.

Leave it to me. I'll write something up. :) Soon. I'll have to do a little research.

I would be interested in playing a human sorcerer (imperious bloodline) in your campaign. Would we be starting at 1st level, I imagine?

Would your campaign be okay with non human races? Also how would a Catfolk Ninja sound as a character?

[edit] sorry, didn't finish all my thoughts there.

What would you like to know?

Are you doing point buy, what limitations on races/classes, that sort of thing. I'm trying to think of an idea I just want to make sure I don't go out of scope.

TheWaskally wrote:

Maybe. Past experience shows that forum gaming, leveling goes slow.

You're well within the race aspects.

Point buy, 20 points.

http://qinae-the-middle-kingdom.wikia.com/wiki/Classes has all the classes approved for this game in a fantasy Ancient China (which spans most time periods except the 20th Century). A ninja is certainly unusual. Everything I know about them is that they don't lead a life of Freedom usually. If you play a ninja, you'll be considered a sleeper agent for another empire, ~and~ have a cover identity.

Oh I get it. Yeah that's more of a Japanese style of class than Chinese. What about a slayer? would that work a little better? I kinda want to go for the tiger zodiac claw-fighting style of character. Maybe I should do a beast totem barbarian, that would work.

Dark Archive

Is this going to be more of a Kingmaker like campaign, dungeon crawl, urban or wilderness encounters or political, I just want to know what is the scope of the campaign, while I continue to read the wiki.

I like the dragonborn btw.

The Dragonborn page isn't finished. *frowns.*

It's tough for an ambitious project to be started and finished by one man. Anyway, the campaign does have political overtones, as the PCs are a part of the Empire's history. Although, there is some dungeon crawling in there, along with some urban and wilderness encounters. Gotta love sleeper agents. :)

Dark Archive

Aawww, here I was looking into a Brawler (Hybrid class) and build a Darastrix Slathalin.

Back to the drawing board.

Loyal Personality (Psi-Crystals)

Silver Crusade

Dot. Monk time

As for my zodiac, I'll use my IRL one, the monkey.

The Chinese had Jian, and the Jian were the influence that begat the Ninjas.

The main difference was how they went about being assassins. Ninjas were in a more rural country, and had to move and attack by night, thus the dark clothes.

Jian were typically 'city folk' because their targets were in large, heavily populated chinese cities. So they blended in, acted as fighters, soldiers, guards, etc, until they wormed their way into the targets trust, and then killed them.

To do a Jian, you'd take any martial or semi-martial class (including Ninja or Rogue) and transition into the Assassin prestige class (or multiclass Ninja/Fighter for example).

What about a Kitsune Summoner? Probably Tiger aspected, summoning a striped 6 tail fox. :)

Slayer sounds great then. I want to do that.

Oh, I'm sure Sun Tzu had some influence on the ninja and the jian. Number one thing to remember, the ninja class (I'm not sure if it should be a class, a prestige class worked so much better!) represents the secret agent in a fantasy world.

I typically don't include them, since the Rogue does fill that role without most of the cloak and dagger. After all, my campaigns aren't James Bond in a fantasy world. ;) But I'm not against you taking the class.

Grand Lodge

Dotting. What about traits? And Lvl 1 I presume? Avg gold?

You have to have 3 traits, since one trait represents your character's zodiac animal. Average gold, yes. Level 1? not sure yet.

I think I want to call the Ox Zodiac sign. That's my own sign anyways. :D

I haven't played a purely martial class in a long while. I think I want to do that.

Your wiki says you can play an Oni-Spawn Tiefling. Which I'm okay with playing if I get to play the barbarian. Could I get to use the large weapons alternate racial trait?

Yes you can play an oni-spawn. No, on the alternate racial trait.

Okay thats totally okay. I wanted half orc but it doesn't look like they're in the... wait you allow kitsune?

Oh. Dang. I hate my brain sometimes. I'll be back.

Okay, Character concept:
Kitsune Swashbuckler, inspired blade.
A young kitsune that wanted to try his hand at being a dashing hero.

Silver Crusade

Concept-
Wandering monk seeking to become the ultimate martial artist, Japanese (or world equivalent) origin. Kind hearted.

Mechanically- master of many styles, qinggong

Dark Archive

Brawler sounds fun, guess I'll keep it human from Qin and maybe snake bite archetype with some monk style feats in the mix.

I don't have time to commit to this game, and you have lots of good players with interest, but....

This is an awesome idea and is very well done. Thanks for the inspiration.

Well, I'm not the healthiest today, so I can't make a long comment on all of your offerings. But I will address Keith's. Yes, they are very creative. And any time, man. I even have a medieval european version, though, built on horror. But I should have built it on ignorance instead. :)

Damn. I can't commit to this pbp. Sorry. Good luck and have fun!

Mitsuo Silverfang Fluff:

A dashing young swashbuckler with a mysterious past... is what Mitsuo would like to see when they look at him. His natural kitsune abilities make that a very likely possibility. With his (many) good looks, natural skill with a rapier, and flair for the dramatic, he hopes to have adventures the likes of which would be talked about for centuries.

He had heard someone was searching for heroes, and a hero he intends to be. He doesn't know much about where his destiny would lead him, but he bore the sign of the snake and he heard that whoever it was had been looking for people like him.

He's a charming individual, generally likable, and quite easygoing. He is rather usual colored, as kitsune go, but his human form is as varied as the people whose appearances he fancies. While he has a 'true' human form just like his natural kitsune body, he is unlikely to show it to someone he doesn't really trust.

I assume that you're playing a Kensai? Someone who goes around perfecting his sword art? Do you want to come up with a version of kenjutsu? Or do you want me to do it?

It's the swashbuckler class from the advanced class guide. But in theme, yes. He's trying to master the blade. (Specifically rapier) Additionally, his family is known as the silverfang because his frandfather was gifted a silver dragon fang from a dragon as a boon and it was forged into a powerful sword. He is trying to get skilled enough to inherit the blade , just like his father did before him.

His father would only give up the blade if Mitsuo could beat him in a duel, which to this day he has not succeeded.

Li Huli Jing:

Li appears to be a tall elegant elf with dark hair and yellow eyes. She usually wears leather armor with bone reinforcements.

The appearance is, of course, a deception. Li is actually a kitsune, of the Yingzi clan.

Her fox form is that of a dark furred fox (also known as a dark or shadow fox).

Li is a somewhat inegmatic sort with a wicked sense of humor. She takes delight in other's misfortunes, so long as those misfortunes are minor. She's not malicious, and doesn't enjoy seeing others suffer. Although a proud samurai who falls in the mud is a delight for her, as is a vain woman ending up under a flock of birds who are suddenly startled into lightening their weight for faster flight.

Li is a summoner, and her companion is Hao Huli, a black striped red fox spirit. Hao is dry and sardonic, a pleasant counter to Li's dry humor.

TRAITS
Keeper of the Veil (Regional) - Even when not cloaked in magic, your training has taught you how to conceal your true nature.

Benefit: You gain a +1 competence bonus on Bluff and Disguise checks, and one of these skills (your choice) is always a class skill for you.

Witty Repartee (Combat) - You are quick with your tongue and have always possessed the talent to quickly admonish your enemies.

Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Bluff checks and Bluff is a class skill for you.

Princess (Social) - You have been raised to expect obedience from those around you, regardless of their station, and are not shy about demanding what you want.

Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks, and one of these skills (your choice) is always a class skill for you.

Paranoid (Drawback) - You believe that someone or something is always out to get you, so you have a hard time truly trusting anyone.

Effect: Anyone who attempts an aid another action of any type to assist you must succeed at a DC 15 check instead of the normal DC 10 check.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Change Shape (Su) A kitsune can assume the appearance of a specific single human form of the same sex. The kitsune always takes this specific form when she uses this ability. A kitsune in human form cannot use her bite attack, but gains a +10 racial bonus on Disguise checks made to appear human. This ability otherwise functions as alter self, except that the kitsune does not adjust her ability scores.

Fast Shifter (Su): You were born with an innate talent for switching between your natural forms. Using your racial change shape ability is a move action instead of a standard action. This racial trait replaces kitsune magic.

Agile (Ex): Kitsune receive a +2 racial bonus on Acrobatics checks.

Natural Weapons (Ex): In her natural form, a kitsune has a bite attack that deals 1d4 points of damage.

Touch of Flame (Su): As a standard action, the shaman can make a melee touch attack that deals 1d6 points of fire damage + 1 point for every 2 shaman levels she possesses. A shaman can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier. At 11th level, any weapon she wields is treated as a flaming weapon.

Life Link (Su): Starting at 1st level, a summoner forms a close bond with his eidolon. Whenever the eidolon takes enough damage to send it back to its home plane, the summoner can, as a free action, sacrifice any number of hit points. Each hit point sacrificed in this way prevents 1 point of damage done to the eidolon. This can prevent the eidolon from being sent back to its home plane.

In addition, the eidolon and the summoner must remain within 100 feet of one another for the eidolon to remain at full strength. If the eidolon is beyond 100 feet but closer than 1,000 feet, its current and maximum hit point totals are reduced by 50%. If the eidolon is more than 1,000 feet away but closer than 10,000 feet, its current and maximum hit point totals are reduced by 75%. If the eidolon is more than 10,000 feet away, it is immediately returned to its home plane. Current hit points lost in this way are not restored when the eidolon gets closer to its summoner, but its maximum hit point total does return to normal.

FEATS
Realistic Likeness
When you are in human form, you can take the shape of a specific individual.

Prerequisite: Kitsune.
Benefit: You can precisely mimic the physical features of any individual you have encountered. When you use your racial change shape ability, you can attempt to take the form of an individual, granting you a +10 circumstance bonus on Disguise checks made to fool others with your impersonation.

Well... time to start a pool for when the kitsune in the group discover there has been another kitsune right next to them the whole time! :D

Actually, I like the idea of each other not realizing they're the same species. It fits with the kitsune's nature and would lead to some fun RP opportunities. Also, know that Mitsuo would likely be flirtatious with her, if you're okay with that.

Sure, just don't be surprised if Hao is a bit protective. :)

No worries. What fun is it if there's no challenge?

I notice that Li has a smoking habit. Does she smoke cannabis?

Probably only on special occasions. And only in a place she feels safe. From the build, I'm sure you can tell she's used to being cagey about who knows her true identity. Given that, she's not going to let her guard down unless she really feels safe doing so.

Okay.

MDT and Rungok's characters are approved. Rorek's still need some work. :)

-working on a "10 minute background" for Ryuu now.

So I have a few ideas.
#1. A child(ish) psion telepath. When he was young he could hear voices in his head, later realizing that they were the thoughts of those around him. When his ability became known his caregivers planned to exploit him. Sensing this, he fled. Now there is a young(ish) human wandering about, looking for a place to belong.
#2. A cavaleer samurai would be neat. A leader of men, riding his steed or fighting on foot. Will have to look into this more.
#3. A human shadow caller summoner (if allowed) summoning the spirits to aid him.

I am liking the first two the most. Now to decide if I want to be more martial-y and leader-y or more caster-y and support-y.

I don't know if this will have any influence on what you decide to go with, but we do have a summoner on the approved list already.
