Homebrew, Player-Focused Re-recruitment, 1-4 Players Needed

Recruitment

51 to 100 of 125 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

I decided to go ahead and write up a full backstory under the assumption that a samurai would be an acceptable character. The rough draft is posted in my alias.

Again I appreciate any feedback or criticism, especially considering that it ended up running on about two paragraphs longer than I would have liked.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry for the silence from my side I've had the flu and didn't feel like doing to much with my head.
I'll post my crunch lateste tomorrow night. I'll either be a standard bard buffer or an arcane duelist to mix melee and buffing

I'm dotting for interest if you are still recruiting! I'm thinking of a summoner.

Silver Crusade

would a roaming knight/mounted warrior be acceptable?

@DM-DR: How about an Ifrit sorcerer like this one? Pending a few tweaks for the level and setting and such, of course

And would I be right in assuming that this home-brew world is largely based on the Babylonian or Assyrian pantheon and such? Just wondering about the flavour sort of thing after looking at the list of the gods you're using.

Fast-Talker: Nishara had a knack at getting into trouble as a child, and as a result developed a silver tongue very early.
Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Bluff checks, and Bluff is always a class skill for you.
Reactionary: Because of Nishara’s hard life on the street she became adept at anticipating sudden attacks and reacting to danger quickly.
Benefit: You gain a +2 trait bonus on Initiative checks.
Inspire Courage: +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.
Flagbearer: +1 morale bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, and saving throws against fear and charm effects.

It's not completely done, uncertain on my archetype, narrowed it down to lotus geisha or arcane duelist and not fully done with buying gear.
Just wanted to share my version of a social focused semi combat bard.

@Warrick

The crunch is good except I'm not seeing your Bluff score. I'm sure you have it because of your trait.

@Dunja Hana

I love that your character is female and the samurai is male. Seems it should be really interesting to roleplay. Is his alignment different from her's? I know there's no alignment restriction on Samurai but it just seems like they should be Lawful. Gough seems more Lawful to me with his insistence that Dunja wander around looking for fights. Does he take control of her or is it just being really insistent?

@everyone

I don't know where DM-DR is. I've messaged him on his site and on this one. He's usually not this flaky. I can still provide some feedback but I can't approve anything.

That's an interesting question that has been giving me some trouble. I think my depiction of Gough places him pretty firmly at LN. However, when reading the Shaman description I'm not really sure how much influence he would actually have beyond just being a troublesome spirit. Obviously I'd have to cooperate with him to some extent to gain his powers, but beyond that it's a little murky.

There's also the consideration that Dunja is a pacifist (or at least as much as one can be in the world of Pathfinder) which is another point of contention with the Edimmu. What I'm thinking right now is that when I'm using any of the Shaman Hexes or Spirit Abilities then I'm using the powers of Gough directly, which means he gets to be in control to some extent. When I'm using my Spirit Magic then that's just the spirit affecting the world as if he were a poltergeist.

The Samurai abilities, on the other hand, are just what Dunja learned from pretending to be a Samurai on stage.

@Dunja Hana

Interesting. She's in control and tapping his powers. So is she going to advance in Sword Saint or Shaman when she levels up?

I'm planning on splitting up the levels as I go. In the immediate I'm putting three levels into Shaman so I can get Evil Eye, Battle Ward, and Spirit Shield. After that it's another two levels into Samurai so I can get Weapon Expertise.

Beyond that I want to so how the game plays out. If I end up relying more heavily Gough's abilities then I'll go Shaman 11/Samurai 9. If it's the other way around then I'll go Shaman 8/Samurai 12.

My absolute top-priority right now is to get 2500gp as fast as possible so I can pick up some Effortless Lace. Without it I can't Weapon Finesse with a katana which puts a serious damper on my build.

Well I've got Evil Eye so you can focus on the other two. But I wouldn't count on getting 2500 too soon. Honestly, wielding the Katana in two hands to gain maximum power attack might be better for her.

I'll be getting Battle Ward at level 3 and Evil Eye and Spirit Shield at level 5. I suppose I can swap Evil Eye for Hampering Hex since the penalties will stack together with your own Evil Eye. It's a little less versatile, but it won't be completely redundant.

I'm dex built for the "stage combat" feel so no Power Attacking for me. In the meantime I purchased a Wakizashi that I can so I won't be totally incapable.

I'll never understand why Katana's aren't a finesse-able weapon straight out of the box but at least it's possible now with the release of the Giant Hunter's Handbook.

Well With Evil Eye you could target AC while I target saves or some other variation.

As for the Katana, you can't wield it in one hand with taking the exotic proficiency.

Maybe you could ask the GM if Piranha strike is better suited. (it does the same thing as power attack but "You make a combination of quick strikes, sacrificing accuracy for multiple, minor wounds that prove exceptionally deadly." So it's better suited to your flavor. If it won't work for the Katana it'll at least work for the Wakizashi.

And finesse seems weird for a two-handed weapon like the katana.

Samurai's get Katana weapon proficiency specifically in addition to "all martial weapons". I assume that means I have the Exotic Weapon Proficiency, though if selected we could ask the DM to weigh in on it. And once I pick up Effortless Lace then I can use Piranha Strike without any issue.

Quote:
And finesse seems weird for a two-handed weapon like the katana.

Sure, but you can weapon finesse with the Dueling Sword and those are pretty similar to a Katana (at least based on the weapon description). But it comes down to a question of personal taste I guess, I'm content with waiting until I pick up some cash. It adds extra flavor too: Dunja isn't a true warrior like Gough, and can't actually use his style without magical assistance.

Duh. How could I have missed that?

I've never used a dueling (in-game or in real life) so I didn't think about that. It also sounds really dumb. I forgive the Elven Curve Blade because it's Elven and therefore probably has some magic or alien nonsense to explain it.

I love the flavor behind the choice though. :)

No use fighting the tides, eh? Best to just go with the flow.

I'm really only worried that I may be conflicting with the setting too much. 2000 years of peace is a long time and that, along with some other things, makes it difficult to justify a wandering warrior (Which is why I went with the gypsy samurai angle). Plus most people aren't religious so even though Edimmu aren't gods by my understanding, it may end up beign a little weird that I have a ghost pal.

Hopefully the DM will be able to weigh in eventually. I don't want to end up getting left out just because I made a character that was too weird compared to the rest of the party.

I worried about the same thing but he accommodated me very well. I even tried to change Valeriya to better fit but he chose to change the fluff a bit so I could have the same essential character. The only thing I totally changed was the Golarion specific stuff which is understandable.

@Valeriya:

Any comments on either this Ifrit Sorcerer here?
This one would need to be tweaked to 2nd level etc

Or this Ifrit Skald here?
This one would need to be tweaked from a 25 point buy to 20 and then from 1st level to 2nd..

Thanks.

Aside the obvious tweaks needed, I don't see any glaring errors.

Fair warning though, there is a bard in the running and I don't know how well the two would work in tandem. The sorcerer can be slotted into any party.

@Valeriya: thanks for that input. I'll try tweaking the Sorcerer (Ilper'aja) to second level, then, and all that. I'll try posting a bit later during the weekend. My weekend will be a bit busy, so I'll do what I can.

Liberty's Edge

@ Valeriya

I see that you're right I forgot to change my trait.

Any word on the DM?

I was wondering the same thing - I'm still interested in applying, but considering that my character might be rather off base I don't want to waste the DM's time. Also I have a really hard time building characters if I'm unsure about the setting lol.

@Ilper'aja Everything looks to be in order to me. Look forward to your backstory!

@Everyone I emailed the GM on his gmail account. He has not responded to me. I'm getting a little worried...

@Valeriya: Thanks! I did write a wee back story for him for the Golarian setting, which may or may not work in this setting:

Early Life of Ilper'aja:

Ilper'aja is from the notorious slaver-haven of Stonespine Island. He knows nothing of his parents or other family. Like so many from that notorious island, he was born and raised as a chattel slave. With no hope of escaping the lash as a child, he is not as headstrong and mercurial as most Ifrit.

Some years ago, Ilper'aja was sold to Sekhet, a reclusive sorceress of modest skill living near the Osirion city of Totra. She treated Ilper'aja and her other slaves quite well. Recognizing his sorcerous talents with fire, she taught him how to channel his powers.

A few years ago, a bold and murderous gang of bandits sneaked into the house of Sekhet. Ever alert, Ilper'aja alerted Sekhet to the danger, and they routed the bandits, receiving slight injuries. After driving the bandits off, Ilper'aja discovered it was a faithless slave who allowed the bandits in, and in fit of fury, scorched him to death. Sekhet overlooked Ilper'aja killing that slave. She may have done so herself.

Sekhet recently granted Ilper'aja his freedom. He was clearly being overtaken by wanderlust, like many Ifrit. Also ageing far faster than her Ifrit slave, Sekhet thought it best to grant him his freedom for his loyalty before she died of old age while he was still young and hale.

Modestly equipped for an adventuring career of his own, Ilper'aja is looking to seek fame and glory for himself.

What locales would work for Katapesh and/or Orsion in this campaign to alter the story appropriately?

Hope the DM's okay and that it's just a matter of being busy-busy sort of thing.

Thanks!

This is good actually because there's a desert in the Western Region that has slavers in it. Check the map linked in the first post. It's called Westwend.

One of the original players was an escaped slave from this area but she left before we could explore it. I think our next mission was to investigate something in this region so it should help introduce your character.

Unfortunately at this point I think I'm going to have to bow out.

Best of luck with the game and best wishes to the DM.

Sorry to hear it, Dunja. I hope you find a great campaign for that character!

@Valeriya: thanks for that!

Here's what I have for Ilper'aja, then. I have not updated his profile with all this. It would just take a few minutes for me cut and past all this into his profile. Hope it looks okay:

--------------------

Ilper'aja (Ifrit Sorcerer)
Ilper'aja is a former slave from Westwend, who received his freedom from his sorcerous mistress for his loyal service. For an Ifrit, he is calm and mild: which really means he is not as abrasive as most. He has an inherent talent for fire magic and wants to seek glory and fame for himself.

Early Life of Ilper'aja:

Ilper'aja is from Westwend. He was born and raised as a chattel slave, and knows nothing of his parents or other family. With no hope of escaping the lash as a child, he is calm and reserved. Which means he's not as mercurial and headstrong as most Ifrit.

Some years ago, Ilper'aja was sold to Sekhet, a reclusive sorceress of modest skill living in a rural estate. She treated Ilper'aja and her other slaves quite well. Recognizing his sorcerous talents with fire, she taught Ilper'aja how to channel his powers.

A few years ago, a bold and murderous gang of bandits sneaked into the house of Sekhet. Ever vigalent, Ilper'aja alerted Sekhet to the danger. They routed the bandits, receiving only slight injuries.

Personality:

Ilper'aja is a highly charismatic sorcerer. His mannerisms include being headstrong, abrasive, and mercurial. However, these foibles are less pronounced than most Ifrit. He takes personal loyalty, or lack of it, very seriously. He won't betray his friends and allies, but he reacts very badly to those who betray him or his friends.

Motivation:

Like many Ifrit, Ilper'aja has insatiable wanderlust and needs few, if any, reasons to seek adventure. He wants to travel and seek his own glory and power. He is more interested in proving his arcane abilities than he is in amassing wealth.

Liberty's Edge

@ Valeriya
Would you share some tips for me about playing a bard, I'm not sure if I should go for the more combat specialized arcane duelist or the mixed support combat lotus geisha.
I feel I have covered the social aspects rather decent on the crunch.

@Ilper'aja Looks good to me.

@Warrick Both are perfectly valid builds. So the decision must come down to the party we have.

We are confirmed to have a debuffing Witch and a Bow Fighter. We almost definitely have a tank fighter. We may have a necromancer wizard. The other possibles are a sorcerer who has blasts and a slayer. Everyone besides the Witch and Wizard would appreciate combat buffs and crowd control. The Witch, wizard, and sorcerer would appreciate someone else on the front line to distract the baddies. The Slayer would like a flanking buddy.

It seems that Lotus Geisha would be great against bosses or if there was only one melee damage dealer. The enchantment focus is great too though.

Arcane duelist puts you on the front line which has its risks but you'd keep the normal bard song to power half the party including yourself.

So I guess I favor Arcane Duelist in pure crunch. I am a roleplayer though so I would prefer a lesser build with a better character or whichever archetype fits your character better.

Hi, everyone. Back and working through all the new messages. My car was totaled on Wednesday so I've been fairly busy trying to get things sorted out.

@Valeriya: thanks for that. I'll keep checking in to see what's happening, then.

Hmm... Would you guys be interested in taking on a newbie to PbP and playing as a PC? I've got almost 2 years of experience as a GM but I've never played as a PC before (the irony!). I was thinking of a half-elf Magus. I know it's past the deadline date, but it seems the GM has poofed momentarily and I thought to sneak myself in XD Let me know so I can post my character stuff. Thank you!

DM-DR wrote:

Hooray the GM is back!

And yes Obsidian we haven't decided on anyone yet so post your character is your want to join us.

Hey everyone! Great the see that the GM is back. If you all need a frontliner I can probably work something up. I really don't mind building a character around a role that the party needs (though I would prefer the slayer/swashie/investigator). :)

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

@Valeriya- Thanks for handling stuff while I was unavailable. I had not intended to have my car totaled while it was parked in front of my house defrosting Wednesday morning. Winter storms and people not knowing how ot drive also knocked out my cable/internet for a couple days…

@Everyone- Recruitment is still open while I go through the messages. I’ll extend the time for backstories and quick crunches until Wednesday (if you need more time let me know, but at least have a backstory and initial character idea).

@Johnnycat- I’ll send you some info that will relate to the “eastern” culture and your backstory. Few of things on your crunch: 1) I am not sure what “Mysteries of the Past” is. 2) What ability is letting you use the katana with Weapon Finesse. 3). Best not to use any “special” weapons unless they are just heirlooms with a story. Still limited to 1st character level wealth even though you are level 2. (Saw later that you were planning for the Effortless Lace to Finesse the Katana). This will change shortly into the adventure. 4). Stats are only 20 point-buy. 5) I do like the backstory. There will be one re-working needed for story reasons (it involves spirits). Anything related to ghosts, spirits, life force, etc. is danger zone material as it ruins the first big surprise for the party T-T. Hope my hints are already ruining things. On the Evil Eye hex, In doesn’t hurt if you both have it as you can each target different things (Ac, Attack, Saves) and then go to other plans after. Since the samurai is proficient with the Katana, you won’t need exotic weapon proficiency to wield it one-handed.

@doesnotlikeshoes- I’ll send you some information about on related group. Just note, something along the lines of what you are looking for will place you on a bad foot with the party should it be known.

@Gen Thunderfist – Still recruiting.

@rorek55- Yeah, totally acceptable. One of the NPCs with the party was a mounted warrior but he is retired (and old.)

@Ilper’aja- An ifrit would be fine, except you have to look human. You will be considered human, but with the ifrit racial bonuses and traits.

@Warrick- Crunch looks good, except gear/money (which I see you said you are still working on).

(Stopping her to get some of this out of the way while I read more messages and look at more crunches).

Donald Robinson wrote:

You have no idea how excited that actually makes me.

Huzzah! I shall get to work right away! ^_^

No problem, GM. Certainly explains the radio silence. And Johnnycat unfortunately had to move on.

P.S. You wouldn't happen to be in Boston, would you? What happened to you sounds like a Boston thing to happen.

@Ilper’aja – Crunch looks good. Only things I have to say are to have age and appearance reflect being Human (just barely posted that so just saying it again). Story works (we can switch out the Golarion type stuff). For the Osirin-esque stuff, you will be looking into the region of ‘Westwend’. There are no permanent settlements there. Everyone is nomadic and it is the one place that has slavery. It is very Egyptian is feel. It is a fairly lawless place as well. See the map for the big desert in the west. (I’ll put map link at end of this post for everyone). Just now read Val’s reply to your thing and read the new background. Character all looks good.

@Johnnycat, just saw your notion to bow out. My apologies and best of luck!

@Obsidian Enigma- As Valeriya stated. I haven’t made decisions as I had an unexpected couple of events keep me away… Still sorting out the headache of no car. Also, I’m completely okay with having a new PbPer.

Hmm… I was sure there were more messages. Or I read faster than I thought.

Sending out the PMs in just a moment.

See this map for any geography based details.

No, Valeriya, I live in West Texas. We are not used to large amounts of snow and definitely not used to snow in the beginning of March (except a tiny bit of ice around Easter for some reason).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ah I see. So it's more like when Atlanta shut down because of two inches of snow. And the Easter Frost is Satan trying to ruin the Resurrection of the Easter Bunny for everyone.

Liberty's Edge

@ Valeriya
My only pure caster class I've played is my wizard 10 / loremaster 2 in society, so i am looking forward to try the bard, mostly i dip caster for a few benefits when it fits my stories.

I kinda like to get my butt into melee, I might have to consider if i should stick with a longspear, flagbearer and later Banner of ancient kings, or go for a more sword and board style for better survival.

To bad i can't cram both archtypes together they are both some i have looked into using in society

@DM-DR: okay, thanks for the pointers. I'll adjust the story and the crunch bits pertaining to appearance and all that. Would the Efreeti bloodline be a better choice for someone from Westwend? Or just stick to the Fire Elemental bloodline?

Thanks.

Either will work fine, but take note that the bloodline making you an ifrit doesn't stem from either source. (Will be explained when I do the final decisions).

While we are talking about backgrounds, how much humans is a lot of humans? I wanted to make a half-elf character, but I'm not sure how much elves are present. If there is some, where would they be present? Also, is there any city/area where a lot of magic is present/the norm? It could be natural, or it could be like a well known academy. Thank you!

Humans make up at least 95% of the population of the world. Half-elves are present, but not strictly in just a single location. Most of the elves of the world live in the Tortitier Forest (as seen on the map).

Magic is available, but not prevalent. This is again due to the peace times (no real need or interest for people to study magic). I know we had a vague academy worked out for one of the members, but part of his story was that the amount of magic and knowledge taught was quite limited.

Understood. I think I can work something out with those parameters. Would it be ok to say because elves have a natural affinity for magic that they might look just a little deeper into it? For quality of life purposes of course, not for combat. That way there's still some level of understanding of magic with the lack of a high level magical academy.

And would it be feasible to set one of the goals of the character to searching for magical texts, other possibly forgotten magical knowledge, and magical researchers? I'm not sure if there's a lot of those, but I want to weave a little knowledge seeking into the backstory.
