Meister / Soul Eater

Homebrew and House Rules

Anyone know of any conversions or homebrew stuff for this? This seems like a cool concept and something I would like to look into playing in the future (or if anyone wants something playtested)

If what is above is not clear this would be similar to the Anime Soul Eater or the video game(s) Disgaea (series) where there is a warrior who has a companion that shifts into a weapon form. This could even make a cool two part class (like 2 base classes one for a PC playing the warrior and one for the PC playing the weapon).

Thanks for the assist.

i know a 3rd party race that turns into weapons, pair it with a summoner and it accomplishes what your looking for....assuming you do 3pp.

I don't anticipate playing as a weapon to be very fun in combat. Just a scaling intelligent weapon I'd say.

I posted the race Christos mentioned in the other thread you started. It's pretty awesome.

There are like two people on the planet Earth who would want to play someone else's weapon, but for those two people, this would be earth shattering. What would be easier is simply creating an archetype for the Summoner with more martial flare, where their eidolon turns into/exists as a weapon form.

i feel like this could be interesting if it was a 3/4 bab class but both player's roll and you use the highest roll. probably once per round.

1/2 casting, which the weapon uses spontaneously. must make a concentration check if he is "used" that round. if he casts he cannot aide wielder, in fact maybe just let weapon aide another on the miester as a free action.

You could go numerous ways with this, first is making it a class archetype that uses a special intelligent item that can snapshot into a limited kind of humanoid. Or you create a race to simulate the weapon race from soul eater as an moc race while giving the meister class leadership as a bonus feat at level 1 to keep the weapon with them. But i feel like allowing a player to role play each half of this kind of thing would get overbalanced very quickly, or a role-playing nightmare when both of the players dont see eye to eye

One reason for my interest (besides this being a kind of cool idea) is that I notice with our groups our players make sorta disparate characters and I have found it difficult to account for the group staying together after certain objectives are accomplished. Typical scenarios start with a: "The king has summoned you because of your skill" or the even more standard "you meet a stranger at a crossroads."

We did one campaign where I played a shapeshifter that infiltrated a prison in order to spy on a cult and sow dischord in their ranks. I freed the other NPCs but after the escape I couldn't really justify continuing to fight with them... I mean... these were dorks who got CAUGHT in the first place. My character felt sorta weighed down by their lack of subtlety and while I, as a player, forced a justification for the others working together (essentially as fodder when she needs to cut and run) it didn't seem like the group had a cohesion.

This actually tends to happen more often than not, and not just for me. I tried creating a character for a different campaign with another player and we were twin brothers, but while we had several mechanical and purely flavorful reasons for fighting together we were often at odds with our personal goals.

Watching Noragami (another anime that uses the Meister/Weapon trope) you see examples of characters who have little to no desire to be united but this sense of belonging with each other is built in. In Disgaea you see Etna using Prinnies as bombs and spears and their distaste for dying (repeatedly) doesn't seem to interfere with their loyalty (though you get the sense that they are willing to betray and possibly see her as the BEST option).

I really do like this class concept but I am also looking for more ways of keeping groups/characters- not exactly FORCED, but motivated- to stick together.

Thanks for your help guys!

I also thought about a summoner archetype. I am not against it, but I think the emphasis on Conjuration detracts from the martial proficiency. The idea is that the Weapon needs someone who specializes in WIELDING it, and if you have eldritch powers it seems unlikely that you would rely on combating with weapons and not with your arcanic might.

I started work on a base class called the Meister. Here is the mockup of it so far. I do not know where to go so far from here but I was thinking of the Meister being given a point pool to spend points on their Weapon Companion to upgrade it with certain abilities. Each of these abilities would not be refundable once chosen. But certain abilities would be spell like effects cast either on the weapon in weapon form or on the player themselves while they wield the weapon in weapon form.

I will continue to work on this class idea but it may take a while depending on how much time I have to work in it.

I know two people, three including myself who would play such a character, depending on the game.

If Roleplaying was the main thrust of such a game, then yeah that'd be cool
If it was a kick in the door type game, yeah that'd get boring rather quickly.

@zadda2597: The link says you need permission to view it.

There that should fix sorry i forgot i had to turn on access to it.

AWESOME man, I will give this a look. Thanks for the help.

Cool. One suggestion and idk if this would matter in the long term or how other people feel about it. I would recommend changing the BAB to 3/4s with the caveat that they treat their BAB as equal to their level when using their Companion Weapon.

This way you are sorta forcing the use of the weapon and penalizing use of any other weapons they may find that are "stronger" than their class feature.

Just a thought.

That sounds great flavorwise and I will definitely add it. Any other ideas?

I have been watching Soul Eater and Noragami recently and noticed that there seem to be specific types of meister's (or gods/what have you) with their own specific affinities. I think that lends itself more to archetypes BUT

In the thought of having those optional "TBD" abilities. One could be the offering an additional weapon form to the companion. Since Black Star's (again, Soul Eater reference) weapon can be a chain sickle, ninja blade, shuriken or smoke bomb (possibly more).

Then when it comes to those who specialize in a single weapon type I would maybe allow the customization of the weapon itself. Something that would stack with other feats/upgrades so you get the sense that the meister REALLY knows what is going on. Like if I choose to specialize in the Scimitar (this is a SUPER popular weapon in our campaigns) maybe there is a talent that would increase the crit multiplier? Or allow you to reroll all damage dice that result in a 1. This way you really are putting out the lethality of your weapon.

I am not entirely sure how the balance mechanism works for things like that. Maybe it would need to be limited, but I think it could be something to look into.

I'm thinking of adding a mutation that lets a character turn into a weapon. They would start with one form, retrainable, and get additional forms as they rise in level. Maybe 3rd level +1 to self or ammo. 5th, can make self or ammo alchemical silver. 7th +2. 9th cold iron. 11th +3. 13th Adamantium. 15th +4. 17th Increased crit range. 19 +5.

The arcana can be aligned(Law, Chaos, Good, or Evil. Smite on crit.) or Elemental damage(Fire, Cold, Acid, Lightning, or Sonic. Burst on crit.)

Aligned would have to be the same as the character(Excaliber is a lawful weapon). Bonus to hit and damage is doubled against opposed alignment.
Elemental damage is 1D6 normally and the mutant has resistance equal to the bonus.

They can take special abilities as feats. These include bleed, envenoming(possibly with holy water), exploding ammo, ghost touch, ect.

The meister is a fighter archtype, like a weaponmaster. Becoming one with the weapon might increase initiative, half again the strength and dex. bonuses as they apply to weapon use only.
