OK here is what I was wondering, Normally there is one person that regularly DM's, and that person cannot make it to a session, so I decide to get some GM experience and take over for a scenario.

looking over everyone's character I find a character that has purchased a magic item that was too expensive with regard to the amount of Fame that character had at the time of purchase.

now the said character does have the correct fame, but for the last scenario the character did not. since I was not the GM for the last scenario, I did not know this.

what do I do moving forward.

Did the item appear on a chronicle sheet? Those can always be purchased regardless of fame.

Assume the player made an error, go over the rules with the player too ensure it won't happen again, and then game and have fun.

This is my choice here, but didn't know if there was any official ruling that had to be done.

and no it was was not on a chronicle sheet.

At this point, my advice would be to make sure the player knows about the mistake and about the fame rules to avoid the error going forward, assuming it is an actual mistake, and move on. As Nohwear said, the item could have appeared on a chronicle sheet, or been Always Available.

Most likely, the mistake was unintentional. I know I've almost done that once or twice, and I actually added the current limit to each character's records to avoid accidentally breaking the rules. As a GM, I'll admit I haven't always been the best about checking Fame when PCs make purchases, either, unless something seems too big for the character's level.

Beyond that, there isn't really much to do. If a player accidentally selects an illegal feat or spell, its easy to have them replace it. I'm not sure there's anything like that which would be appropriate in this case.

On the other hand, if the player is intentionally breaking the rules, then its time for a conversation with the other GM, and probably a VO.
