Questions about forum courtesy

Website Feedback

It's apparent to everyone that there are some common courtesies that people exhibit in the forums that aren't written anywhere other than the minds of the experienced. I'm pretty new to forum posting so I've got some questions about the courteous and the taboo. I'm not asking about the regular community guideline stuff, I've read that.

First is probably did I post this in the right place?
I wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask that first.

Second is about necroing
Its obvious to me that I wont post in a discussion that either seems completed/over or one that is 6 months old or something but how long is too long? is it days or weeks?
What if it's your own thread, does this time period extend?

Third, is there anything that's not blatant or apparent when it comes to forum courtesy or taboo?

There is no real rule againt necroing a thread. There might be a joking or snarky comment or two (or whole avalanche if the necromancy is especially old, or it fits the thread) but as long as the thread isn't closed it's a free game. Of course necroing an old thread might be less practical than starting a new similar thread because the old thread might be obsolete or the people who participated in it no longer pay attention.

Paizo and most forumities forum-dwellers are friendly to LGBT folks so using word "gay" as a replacement for "lame" is seriously frowned upon. Using term "rape" in any other context than meaning an actual crime of rape is a big no-no.

Discussing merits and flaws of various iterations of D&D/Pathfinder/D20 is tolerated as long as it does not devolve in edition warring.

There are a few thread types that would be considered beating a dead horse.

Monk problems threads
Rogue problems threads
Paladin alignment threads
Caster/martial disparity threads
Summoner, gunslinger, etc. is overpowered threads.
etc.
It doesn't stop people from starting and participating in them, but you might want to just do a quick search (sometimes google can be more effective then Paizos search) before asking if your paladin should fall.

Also, there are some political topics that get a little ugly, so you might want to search first of you are going to post a controversial topic. Perhaps check to see how the last thread or two related to the topic ended. If they were locked, it might be a sign that it isn't a great topic for Paizo.

In general, the Paizo boards are positive and well moderated. If you are following the "don't be a jerk" guideline, then it is all good.

Thank you both

Heya! Welcome to our forums!

1) Where you posted is fine, but our Website Feedback forum is commonly used for addressing forum questions/issues, so I've moved it there.

2) Responding to an older thread (or necro-ing) is fine! The only time this becomes an issue is if a person responds to a thread just to argue with someone who's posted weeks/months/years ago. But if you're responding to clarify a question/ask a question/or revive the discussion, there's no issue with it.

3) I'd highly recommend reading our Community Guidelines. If you're uncertain about a post/thread you're going to make, you can always email us at community@paizo.com to get feedback. :)

The exception is in the customer service forums. We don't recommend responding to someone's else's specific issue thread (old or new) since it makes it easier for the new question/issue to slip through the cracks.
