On Average, How Easy Is It To Get A Pistol By Level Two?

I am playing with making a Savage Technologist for PFS. They have some neat abilities that use a sword and a pistol, but not till level two. Thus, I am wondering how likely it is that I will be able to get one by then.

Tier 1 rewards are generally around 500 gp. I would recommend a pepperbox instead, two-handing weapons until then. Unless you're planning on shooting once every fight. That's my two cent's worth, but it comes from PFS savage technologist experience.

It is difficult, but possible to purchase acquire a firearm by level 2.

Firearms aren't always available, so you'll need a high enough fame score to purchase them. You can find a full chart in the Guide to Organized Play, but here's the relevant snip.

Quote:

Fame Required // Maximum Item Cost

Under 5....0 GP
5..........500 gp
9..........1500 gp
13.........3000 gp
18.........5,250 gp

So even if you have the gold needed to purchase your firearm, you'll need to have the minimum fame to match. If you're eyeing a pepperbox, you'll need 13+ fame, which is a minimum of 7 scenarios (as each rewards 0-2 fame), which means you'll get your gun at level 3.

The only way to get around this is to spend 2 prestige to receive a free item of up to 750 gp in value. This option is also detailed in the Guide. So you could theoretically get your hands on a coat pistol or buckler gun after your first 2 prestige.

To make matters worse (augh!), you can't even get a firearm with a savage technologist barbarian without first taking the Gunsmithing feat, as per this entry in the additional resources

Quote:
No character may purchase a firearm unless she possesses the Gunsmithing feat and firearms are never considered Always Available

It is the same restriction that applies to people that are looking at using the picaroon archetype for swashbucklers.

Hope that clears things up!

For Society play, it's really just advisable to dip one level of Gunslinger.

You get Quick Clear, Gunsmithing, and a free firearm.

I dislike multiclassing, personally, and a one level dip for Savage Technologist means your build doesn't come online until level 6, but it really is the simplest option.
