Ioun Wyrd's Stone For Starting Characters

Rules Questions

Is it always assumed to be a doul grey stone? Can they be built with such a stone as their first, or is this not meant to be a familiar that a character starts with?

Sczarni

Can you link or quote... something?

I have no idea what you're trying to ask.

This came out with the Familiar Folio. I assume it's an option for a starting familiar and he wants to know what the stone should be in such a case.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Grammar, spelling, and links are always helpful.

The Ioun Wyrd, a creature from the new Familiar Folio, is a magical construct made of rocks, gems, and at least one Ioun Stone which can be taken as a familiar for a spellcaster. I do not have the book in question and cannot say if you need Improved familiar to even HAVE the critter, but I am quite certain that you cannot and will not get one "For free" by calling or conjuring it up via the normal means.

Rules for constructing it requires gems, lodestones and granite coated in 500 gold worth of alchemical materials and "one functional ioun stone" which implicitly must be supplied by the creator. Further down the entry it becomes explicit when it lists the cost: "1,000 gp plus ioun stone"

So to reiterate, it can be built with any ioun stone you can get your grubby mitts on, but you gotta build the familiar or hire someone to build it for you after getting that ioun stone on its own.

Doesn't seem to be that bad of a critter, just not that good either.

To answer the questions posed here:

1: No you do not need Improved Familiar to take this familiar, it is a construct that is created using the following:
IOUN WYRD
CL 5th; Price 1,500 gp plus ioun stone
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Construct, animate object, lesser geas;
Skill Knowledge (arcana) DC 15; Cost 1,000 gp plus ioun stone

So unless you have the required materials and Craft Construct you can't take this familiar without paying someone for it.

2. This familiar could actually be relatively useful. It gains all the benefits you would normally grant a familiar and it can absorb a number of additional Ion Stones equal to 1/2 its HD. It also grants all the benefits of every Ion Stone it contains to its master as long as it is within 30ft. That could be useful if you want to use Ion Stones but don't fell like playing nanny to your own personal solar system.

Scarab Sages

Less useful if you've been Implanting the stones ala Seeker of Secrets.

Still a cool, interesting construct familiar.

Also note the Ioun Wyrd grants the 1/2 feat all normal familiars grant.

At 2' in diameter, they are larger (volume) than a person, yet they are listed as Tiny. Maybe they are not solid, so it is instead a mini-solar-system 2' in diameter.

The description describes the central stone occasionally pulsing with dim light. The dull grey Ioun stone is dead, and I would rule that it does not pulse with light, so no 25gp center stone.

The Blindsight, however, can be great for finding invisables.
