Still trying to build support locally. So far at least in discussions, the idea hasn't caught fire (including with the VC).
However, I'm hoping to try and get at least 1 core table every other week (level 1-5) as well as some core tables at a convention in late March including for the specials.
To help out new players, getting back to basics has also inspired me to create "custom pregens" for level 1, to give several options for each class. (I'm working on creating 3 characters to fill out each class, with miniatures and character sheets ready to go for walkups.) This way I can make options for different play styles, racial preferences, etc. Just seemed like a fun way to relearn core, since I'll never get to play that many characters.
What are others doing to try and launch core campaign in their area?

Consider perhaps speaking to the challenge aspect. Take examples from some popular video games, where people self-limit: Wolfenstein with only the pistol, Halo with only physical attacks, Duke Nukem with pistol and Mighty Boot, etc.
It levels the playing field for those who are not system masters, or have the financial capability to own every book.
It's great for bringing new GMs into the fold. In our area, we've had several long-time players finally step up to GM now that they don't feel the need to know all the rules, or deal with min-max characters who (essentially) trivialize most encounters.
As far as actually launching it, here in Winnipeg, it has taken off on its own. We are quite fortunate in having a large, diverse and extremely active community, so another play option was great.
