Beast Rider Archetype and Mammoth Mount Question

Rules Questions

The Exchange

I have been thinking of making a Cavalier, and the Beast Rider Archetype caught my eye. I have become a bit confused with the wording and even frustrated as I've been unable to locate a straight forward answer that has not been reposts of the question or turning it into a circle.

At fourth level it states that a medium sized beast rider can choose a mammoth (mastodon) as a mount. The 7th level states you can choose a large or huge sized animal provided that it was available as medium size at 7th level.

The stat block on animal companions had the mastodon/elephant as a medium creature at the start (which makes no sense as this means in Pathfinder a horse is somehow larger than a mammoth) which isn't large size until 7th level.

My questions are.

At 4th level, with the cavalier being able to choose a mastodon as a mount, would it be size large or size medium?

If it is size medium, would the beast rider be able to get it at 7th level or does the convoluted wording prevent the medium sized beast rider from having a mastodon until prestiging into the Mammoth Rider class at 10th level and only being able to use that mount for 2 levels?

Sovereign Court

You answered yourself. You can choose it as a medium creature at level 4 and at level 7 it increases in size to large. The wording for the choosing a large or huge size creature at level 7 is for if the creature is only medium at level 7, allowing you to increase its size so you can actually ride it.

Liberty's Edge

You can ride a Mammoth once you hit level 7 when it is large enough, or you can spend a feat on undersized mount (ACG) and use it from level 4.

On the other ability at level 7 it is correct what Ellias Aubec has said.
