What do metamagic rods look like?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

As per Paizo art, campaign descriptions or other official material?

I imagine them as wands, exactly like what Harry Potter calls his wand.

I wish to 3D print props for my party, I'm the DM.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

per the CRB:

Rods are scepter-like devices that have unique magical powers and do not usually have charges. Anyone can use a rod.

Physical Description: Rods weigh approximately 5 pounds. They range from 2 feet to 3 feet long and are usually made of iron or some other metal. (Many, as noted in their descriptions, can function as light maces or clubs due to their hardy construction.) These sturdy items have AC 9, 10 hit points, hardness 10, and a break DC of 27.

Is this what you are asking for?

Look at the official artworks for the new ACG and occult I think..
I think they have some pictures of some. I remember one guy at least having something I assumed was rods.

According to Freud, the answer is not appropriate for a child-friendly board. But yeah, check out Ultimate Equipment, Magical Marketplace, and the like, they usually have images.

That would only be for the metamagic rods of Enlarge, Extend, and Maximize.

Overall, if the specific rod doesn't have a physical description, then 'whatever' suffices.

You can take this to mean that the rod itself is not important, but the magic put on it so that it can work as a magical item. It would likely be at least somewhat ornate, and rather sturdy, due mainly to the fact that it is for an item that costs several thousands of gold.

It might have some draconic instructions labeled on it, such as 'point this end away from self'.

That's a good start.

I had another look though the PRD, and found a page in Ultimate Equipment about Rods in general. What I didn't know is, Metamagic are just one category of rods! There are no visual descriptors for the Metamagic ones (lame) but quite detailed ones for all the other rods.

I'll read it over and then 3D print some of my own design then.

But not every rod is useful for everyone. I.e. metamagic rods in the hands of non-casters.

Oops. Managed not to see this before I started my thread. What a noob I am.

I'm currently making metamagic wands using silver and gemstones. Because I can. I've kept them fairly plain / functional. I wanted to colour code them as I was worried about my characters accidentally using the wrong ones, quickening when you wanted to extend, for instance.

I wondered if anyone had any ideas on specific colours / colors for different types of metamagic? I'm happy to come up with my own, but wasn't sure if there was any sort of concensus / preference on this?

Sorry if this is highjacking your thread, but I thought two threads on the appearance of metamagic rods might be overkill.

He he

Yeah but define 'use'

1) Barbarian waves his Metamagic Rod at the orcs while telling them in no uncertain terms he will 'turn them into a less than pleasant smelling dung heap if they don't do as he says RIGHT NOW! (and rolls for intimidate). Nice prop there AM SMASH the wizard pretender.

2) Nothing really says that a Metamagic Rod is of less sturdy construction than the norm (though I do tend to picture them with more baubles). Could still be used as a weapon by the fighter trying to take on a skeleton when he finds himself without a bludgeoning weapon.

I.e. less useful may indeed be a more accurate statement.

Think about what you want them to look like.

They look exactly like that.
