Alchemist / Investigator question regarding wands

Rules Questions

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

According to the rules "An alchemist can utilize spell-trigger items if the spell appears on his formulae list". From this it is fairly obvious that he can use wands that cast spells off his formulae list. However there is not a similar sentence anywhere within the "Alchemy" section for Investigators.
From this I am assuming that while Alchemists can use wands of those types without making a UMD roll, that Investigators cannot unless they DO make a UMD roll.
Is this correct? Or is it just a typo in the Investigator description?

As of now, that's correct. There's no developer comments since the ACG came out that contradicts that. Supposedly there was a comment back during the playtest that investigators not using spell-trigger items was intentional. It's still being debated, and until the ACG errata/FAQ comes along, investigators got boned.

Shadow Lodge

Also notable: the Alchemist's Brew Potion as a bonus feat came packaged with the ability to use extracts for Brew Potion (since extracts don't normally count as spells for crafting purposes). The Investigator does not get the "Brew Potion" package and thus cannot make potions even if they want to take Brew Potion.

Sovereign Court

I think it's an editing mistake, and that the investigator can use wands in the same way as the alchemist. I've gone into the matter in detail here.

In short: the alchemist has text explaining which magic items they can and can't use. All the reasons given in that explanation apply to investigators in the same way.

I've heard about this playtest comment, but haven't been able to find it.
