Cleric Questions (PFS)

Rules Questions

I have several questions regarding a 7th level Cleric that we did a minor rebuild on. We switched his alignment, diety, and picked up a different domain.

Since he now has an animal companion, can he no longer cast his Summon Monster spell line?

If he cannot, I think it would be wise for us to retrain a couple feats we took that were taken specifically to power up his summoned monsters.

Spell Focus: Conjuration
Augment Summoning

Would there be any reason to keep these feats or are they mostly useless now?

Also, I would love some tips on a couple feats that help to do the following:

Power up his channels
Increase duration/effect on buff spells

Any magic items that might be able to do similar things that he could purchase?

As always, thank you all for your time!

Why would he not be able to summon with an animal companion? You have heard of druids, right?

I thought there was a rule in PFS play that limited the number of controlled critters you could have in play. And yes, I have heard of a Druid I just have never seen one played at the table. Odd.

You can only have one combat companion (animal companion, mount, eidolon) in a scenario for PFS.

This does not limit you from summoning via spells like Summon Monster. Please just be considerate of your tablemates as you already have 2 characters to control on your turn and now are going to add even more. Make sure you have all your stats ready to go for any controlled creature and run the summons as quickly as possible to avoid taking up an inordinate amount of table time is all that's asked.

The PFS limit is on the number of creatures you can bring with you. You can't bring both an Animal Companion and a Familiar or Eidolon.

You can summon as many creatures as you have spell slots for.

The Summoner has a class specific limit on their spell like ability to summon. That is different than the PFS limit.

OK, so lets take a step back please.

This is for my 9 year old son who loves to have an animal to control and he used his monster summoning for that reason. The issue was what was described above, it slowed down his turn even though we had the stat blocks all created and ready to go for his favored critters. In the interest of not slowing the game down to much we thought it would be best to just have an animal companion all the time instead of deciding when to summon, what to summon, and where to place them etc.

Sorry if I did not go into the entire explanation earlier.

Now, with that in mind are there any suggestions of items/feats that will increase his channel ability, raise stats on his animal companion, or allow him to increase duration/effects on his buff spells?

Thanks again!

items/feats that will increase his channel ability: Improved Channel, Alignment Channel, Extra Channel, and Quick Channel spring to mind. If you go HERE and type "Channel" into the search engine, and selects the "Feats" box, you should come up with every option out there.

raise stats on his animal companion: have the Companion take the Extra Item Slot feat for a Belt and you can spend money to increase its Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution (or any combination of the 3). The best short term buff for a Cleric to use on an Animal Companion is probably Divine Favor.

increase duration/effects on his buff spells: Metamagic Rods. Start with a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Extend.

Lesser Extend rods are always a good investment for buffers. Doubling the duration of level 1-3 buffs can mean they last a couple of combats, or that utility buffs like longstrider last all day.

If your son's character is a Cleric with an Animal Companion then consider the Boon Companion feat. It effectively removes the Character level -3 advancement penalty from the Animal domain, powering fluffy up a bit.

As for channeling - that's a whole other can of worms.

Channeling can be useful in combat but typically requires quite a bit of investment and build specialisation to do well. If you're keeping things simple then avoid it.

For a nine-year-old, static benefits like Improved Initiative are likely to given more benefit than channel feats. Fewer things to keep track of, you get benefit from it every combat etc.

Channel must haves are selective channeling and Phylactery of Positive Channeling.

Totem beast from Advanced Class Origins gives your beastie a static animal focus from the hunter. Something like Darkvision or enhancement bonus to Strength?
