The new Thor's book is pretty good... Although i'd have prefered if they had created a new character, or taken an existing female member of the nordic pantheon and made her more important (kinda like they did with Miss Marvel, now Captain Marvel, who became a more important character is last few years).

As it is, replacing Thor as the God of Thunder pretty much guarantees that she'll eventually be kicked aside so that male Thor can come back and wield Mjolnir again.

Also, I wish they'd bring Marrow back... In the classic form, where she had bone knives sticking out of her back because she couldn't control her powers very well... I think she's in Cable and The X-Force, but that book is pretty "meh". I don't even know if it's still running...

In the Spider-man universe, I don't like Silk, but the Spider-Gwen seems cool. And I'd love to see a return of the Spider-Girl comics.

For the X-men, I just hope they don't bring Jean Grey back again... She's the dullest character ever. Emma Frost is so much more interesting... She actually has a freaking personality!

They have a young Jean running around right now and she's developing nicely. The whole brought into the future and discovering just what kind of a clusterF#@& her life was going to be seems to have shoved her in a different direction.

Last I saw she was learning how to use her powers from Emma, along side the Cookoos. 1 Cookoo hates her and another thinks she's awesome.

Powers are evolving differently as well, she's turing into more of a Melee Tanker style fighter.

If they keep her new Jean is going to be a very different character from the old one

Eric Masterton. Another replacement Thor, back in the 90s.

Stuck around for awhile after Thor returned. Had his own series for a couple of years before he was killed off.

I'm not sure I buy the "always fated to die" part. He was around in one form or another for something like 6 years. I don't believe anything in comics is planned out that long. More likely, he died because his book didn't sell well enough. If it had, he would have stuck around.

I was a big fan of Eric. I'm sad that Marvel came out with 3.5" Beta Ray Bill, but no Thunderstrike.

Personally I detest the idea, since I found nothing wrong in the current marvel canon and how things were going on. Sure, there were some things I was not a fan of, but I just ignored them. I really like the new characters like Robbie Reyes, Kamala Khan and Silk, new Uncanny X-Men and Dawn Greenwood. Axis seems like interesting idea (It's done already, but I'm waiting for the comics in Finland) and I purchace new books every month.

Now I fear that some of these new and interesting characters are gonna disappear, if the idea is that ultimate universe and regular universe merge and some characters will get replaced. I fear that they will forget these new guys and bring back some now deceased characters, like Jean Grey or replace the new versions with the old ones.

I have faith that Marvel can make the right choice. Because ohterwise it could be the new 52 situation all over again.

I think it's more likely they are just going to reverse a few unpopular decisions (Spiderman's deal with the devil), while bringing in some popular Ultimate/One-off characters. I don't think they plan on ditching the new characters, especially popular ones like Kamala Khan.

I doubt they'll actually reverse the Brand New Day thing, though they may downplay it somehow. It's been 6 years, another reversal with "Peter and MJ really have been married all this time" just makes things uglier. (Especially with the Superior Spider-man.)

And now everybody retroactively hasn't forgotten Peter Parker is Spider-man?

Blech. As much as that was a stupid decision, it would bad to reverse it again.

The next Spiderman arc after Spiderverse is has the title "Renew Your Vows", with the cover having Peter and Mary Jane together with a daughter.

The spiderverse also establishes a version of Spiderman who is pretty much exactly Peter Parker, only still married. So what ever reality altering events make up Secret Wars may simply go with this version of Spiderman.

I stopped reading Spider-Man 6 years ago in disgust. Reversing BND would possibly bring me back.

Chris Mortika wrote:

I'm sure there are others who share that opinion.

OTOH, it was 6 years ago. Spider-man remains one of their better selling titles, I believe. There are a lot of people reading now who might be upset by rebooting the Spider-Man they've been following. They've apparently been able to tell good stories in the years following BND, however bad it was.

Apparently, based on MMCJawa's link, they're planning on doing this. Maybe they'll come up with a clean way to pull it off. More likely it'll have all the forseeable problems of any reboot. We'll likely have no clear idea how it all worked out or what's happened in the time in between. Even if they bring back the marriage, I doubt they'll have everyone remember that Parker is Spider-man or get rid of Aunt May.

I gave up Marvel comics 3 or 4 months ago... the storylines are exhausting to say the least, and the reader is now expected to extrapolate 90% of the plot by guessing... i'm not sure if it's an official literary technique but I call it "The Cinematics Dumbs". While this may be ok once in a while or for action scenes, for oysters' sake use actual writing from actual writers once in a while!

Some stories are cool, but often the coolness is mitigated by frequent writer turnover and an overbearing urge to undo what the previous writer has done. The taking over of Spider-Man's body by Otto Octavius was a genius move, but a large portion of readers whined so hard about it that they lamely undid this.

That's the problem with Marvel I came to realize. How long am I going to keep reading about Peter Parker, an unkillable yet likeable fellow who has amazing physical powers but no matter what, will live another day? I've been at it for 30 years and there's no way I'll just read the same thing over and over and over again for another 30...

The comic has been overdone; the movies are overdone; the toys have been overdone; I'm afraid that Spider-Man is a good indicator of the death of the Marvel universe: like Spider-Man, it's been overdone, and needs to die. The beancounters have milked the cow dry and are now slaughtering it for parts.

Problem with this: the *new* Marvel universe will no doubt be a rehash of the "old" Marvel, complete with the same boring origin stories.

...unless the new Marvel Universe is ruled by Howard the Duck and his cousin Donald Duck... then I'll be giving it a shot again... and maybe splurge once in a while to buy the limited run of the Seven Dwarves vs. the Mole Man...

This is why I said I wanted to see characters age. Honestly, it has been positively ages since any of the second generation of X-men had any particular character growth in the stories. My experience ended a few years ago, but at that point they were cardboard roles and unchanging since forever. Typecasting? If you go back to the first generation, it was even more terrible. Maggot, Marrow, a few others were interesting and changed. So... it really isn't about how good characters would be rebooted, it is about stupid rehashing of characters that used to be good.

New characters taking mantles of the old, making new groups, changing loyalties, new personalities, different views of the old struggles, new fights, all these things could be had if only Marvel wasn't so frightened of not using their favourite old timers.

That's simply untrue. There's no way the Superior Spider-man storyline wasn't intended to be a limited thing from the very beginning. They didn't undo it because readers whined, they undid it because they'd told what they wanted to tell except for the part where Parker comes back.

As for Peter, he kept you reading for 30 years. That's a damn good run. I bet there are a lot of characters who didn't hold your attention that long. Maybe it's time for you to move on?

Meanwhile, there are a lot of readers who haven't been following Peter for 30 years. Maybe he hasn't worn out for them yet? Why demand he go away and they lose their chance to enjoy him?

Just out of curiosity, who are you considering the second generation of X-Men?

I'm reading that as Maggot and Marrow were first, which seems completely off to me. They'd be well after 2nd, from my point of view.

Iceman, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Cyclops were the first generation, no? Second is Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler etc. After that it becomes far more difficult. Maggot and Marrow were far, far later - and as younger characters, not completely overdeveloped yet, they were more interesting to read about. I guess I could have phrased that better.

Another point to consider is that there are so utterly many characters in the Marvel universe by now. There certainly wouldn't have been a lack of characters to put in as children if they had wanted to.

Ok, that makes more sense.

Maggot and Marrow never really interested me, but I'd gave up following the X-Men seriously around their time.

I loved the Superior Spider-Man run, and I loved the way it ended. I always expected Pete to come back, and I thought the story where he did come back was well done.

As for me, I've only been enjoying Spider-Man stories for 25 years or so, but I haven't gotten tired of them yet. I've really been enjoying the latest Spider-verse run in TAS. It's like a love letter to spidey fans. They keep throwing in all the weird wonderful incarnations of Spider-Man from throughout the years. They even had Leopardon, the giant mecha from the live action Japanese Spider-Man show!

Oh, and This. This was amazing.

I haven't gotten into any comics since the beginning of the Onslaught storyline. Even then, all I bought was X-Men. I was really getting into the story as well, but them saying that the story continues in the Fantastic Four, just turned me off (I never really cared for the F4). Haven't picked up a comic book since.

Of course, about that time, the artwork had been going downhill (to me), and didn't feel like comic book art. So I never really got into the Ultimate universe. My exposure to that was the Ultimate Spiderman video game. The horrible things I found out in that game made me curious, so I went and looked up the Ultimate universe heroes and villains, and I wanted to bash my head into a wall. Too much change just for the sake of change. And that kind of change is just shitty. Changing things up, I can understand. Adding in new X-men or Avengers to replace the older ones is fine. It has worked out before. But taking a character that people know and liked, and completely changing it because "New is gud and old is dum" is just stupid.

I have been reading the Civil War storyline, so I can understand the premise behind the new Captain America movie. I have also been reading House of M, Age of Apocalypse, and getting back into the Onslaught storyline. I had honestly got the desire to get back into comic books again, like I was a teenager again. But if they are keeping things from the Ultimate universe into the main universe, then I will just pass on returning.

I strongly recommend reading Ultimate Spiderman, even if only the earlier installments. Those first issues (when I was reading it) were amazing.

Yeah, I love Ultimate Spider-man, at least up until they changed artists. I dropped it soon after that because I just didn't like the new guy's style. But there's still 110 issues of Bendis/Bagley awesomeness up to that point. (Though the story-telling started to get a little tired toward the end, too, and I do agree with Adjule's comment about change for change's sake. I didn't care for the reveal about Doc Ock and his arms at all.)

This is exactly what I meant: I can't comment on anything later, but the first part was pretty amazingly great (and far, far better than the Ultimate X-Men, which came off as "teens are spiteful and rebellious, the X-Men are teens, so they should be spiteful and rebellious!" which didn't match my teen years at all, so...)

It says something that I'm so out of touch with my comics habit that this thread is how I found out about it.

They have to handle this with care. Fold up the old world with dignity and... I hate to say it... let some of their most beloved themes rest in peace. If they're going to run this risk they can't go halfway on it: "We're starting over... but keeping everything exactly the same!" won't comfort old fans and won't interest new ones. "We're changing everything just to make people realize how extreme our reboot is!" is something DC already tried a couple times...

The X-Men being "a family united by adversity" is a theme that's too central to eliminate, but the 'constant irrational racism' theme that never lets them get any credit could stand a rest for a few decades. Spider-Man being a self-critical underdog? That has to stay - it's central - but his personal life being in a constant state of crisis could be given a rest. The Fantastic Four being explorers, problem-solvers and inseparable companions is fundamental: having superpowers, odd as it sounds, isn't really essential.

And above all, no messing with Doom. As he'd be the first to tell you, he's perfect as he is.

one peice of advice I would offer

take this opportunity to write down the rules for magic.
It doesn't need to be an essay just a few key points and concepts for future writers to look at to maintains some consistancy.

One of the problems with Dr. Strange is each writer ends up bringing their own version of magic. His power level jumps up and down like a yo-yo. Some writers stick him to a few old classics while others basically define magic as "make a wish and push the universe"

I know the higher ups at Marvel have previously said "It's magic we don't have to explain it." but that is dead wrong.
Because it's magic you need to explain it. Magic can't just be a deus-ex Machina solution to problems.

I think this is going to come down to bringing in popular parts of the Ultimates and various non Universe 616 elements (Spider-Gwen) into a new shared Marvel Universe, as well as retconning some of the less popular elements. Also probably setting up MCU friendly storylines and characters.

I thought The Ultimates was an interesting twist (especially with how everyone treated Thor) but by the end of it, I hated every single character, except maybe Thor. They were all a bunch of whining, selfish, mentally-unstable jackhats. I like a little more hero in my superhero tales.

Collosus and Nightcrawler's idiosyncrasies weren't the best storyline, but I could see it. it really, really was done poorly, however- a stark contrast to how Northstar was handled.

I liked Northstar, and his relationship with Colossus. I also thought Colossus having a crush on Wolverine was fun. I just didn't care for the drug addict story-line. I do agree it might have been more palatable if it had been handled better.

My concern about the merging of the two Universes is how much of the "dark and gritty Wasp-eating, drug addict mutants, jerks-in-costumes Ultimates" aspects are going to get ported over.

I was a big fan of Eric. I'm sad that Marvel came out with 3.5" Beta Ray Bill, but no Thunderstrike.

They have one coming. I'm looking forward to him.

Of course, I haven't even found Eric's Thor version in stores yet :(

And the mace is in the wrong hand, damnit! At least the Heroclix figure got it right, er, left.

I never noticed that... I remembered him two-handing it a lot, and there are a few right-handed pictures... but yeah, a whole lot MORE left handed ones...

I can't find the original article, but I remember reading Eric was designed left handed to help differentiate him from Thor. But he's definitely a lefty.

My concern about the merging of the two Universes is how much of the "dark and gritty Wasp-eating, drug addict mutants, jerks-in-costumes Ultimates" aspects are going to get ported over.

Well, Mark Millar seems to be not working for Marvel anymore, so a lot of those tendencies have gone away. Kyle and Yost still get work sometimes for them, so there is still is cause for concern.

The last two years have seen a pretty tame UU in terms of jackassery and lethality. I'd say they already took a little part of the over-the-top grittyness and a lot of the moral ambiguity and made it part of the 616 universe with their big storylines since Civil War, which is why the UU is pretty obsolete nowadays.

I think they won't do a full reboot. They are mostly going to finish the UU and situate some of the more interesting characters in the core 616 universe. I am crossing my fingers that Ultimate Peter Parker and his supporting cast will make it, but since Bendis will want to place his golden child, Miles Morales, firmly in the 616 universe, I sadly doubt it.

What really pisses me off is that apparently the rest of the multiverse also got killed off in the collateral of this big storyline.

I'd say all of them since that's what seems to sell.

indeed. I loved that about ultimates at first, but only because there was a standard universe to compare it to. On its own? It would get old quick.

That said, I love Millar, and think he is better on his own, away from marvel. LOOOOOOVE kickass.

As far as Spiderman goes, it looks like we are getting married, family man Peter Parker, as well as Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales. So it's going to be a big buffet of Spiderman characters from different universes.

And exactly where this "married, family man Peter Parker" comes from and what the full history really is and how or if it ties in with Miles and Gwen? Well, they'll probably be working that out for the next decade or so.

Wait ... Colossus is gay/bisexual now?

Having read the character for years, I'm not remotely buyin' that.

Ultimate Colossus. Not the original Marvel Universe one.

Oh, OK.

Very good, then. Carry on.

I would just want UU's female clone to survive the merging. Really liked her as a character.

Yes. Ultimate Colossus is gay. Teenage Kitty Pride ended up dating teenage Peter Parker for awhile (which was a great relationship dynamic, IMO). As much as I liked 616 Colossus and Kitty, their early relationship was on a little on the creepy side, with the 14 year-old Kitty dating the 19 year-old Colossus. Once the comics allowed both of them to become adults it was a lot less squicky. But throw everyone back to the beginning like they did in the Ultimates Universe and you have a problem again. (Of course, they did have centuries-old Logan sleep with 19 year-old Jean Grey in the Ultimate Universe, so there's still that.)

According to Ultimate Origins, Logan would only be between 80 and 90. Not that that makes it any better. And Ultimate Origins is a terrible book that, while not outright contradicting things, definately takes things in another direction than implied in other Ultimate universe books or just plops things in that had not been even hinted at before (odd for how closely a lot of the Ultimate universe is tied together).
