Hook mountain massacre hook

Rise of the Runelords

Liberty's Edge

Okay I seemto be going blind or fumbling my perception check but seem to be missing the clue to send the party to Hook Mountain for the last part. Help please.

I don't know that it's spelled out explicitly, it's more inferred than defined.

Spoiler:

This is the assumed path in the AP: After clearing out Fort Rannick, the pc's head for Turtleback Ferry, encounter the flood (and Black Magga!) they head to the dam, prevent disaster and discover Lucretia's plan to kill all those with the Sihedron Tattoo. After that, either because they found the notes in Lamatar's room or because they are approached by the pixie or both they head to Whitewillow in search of the missing Black Arrow commander. They encounter Myrianna and she implores them to bring her lover back to her.

At this point, the Kreeg's are still a threat, the commander is missing - taken prisoner by the Kreegs and the time has come to take the problem out at its source. Any surviving Black Arrows should suggest this (and point the way.)

Basically the AP assumes the pc's will know the Kreegs have a clanhold and be motivated by Myrianna or otherwise to finish the job. Implication: with the Black Arrows decimated, the Fort and Turtleback Ferry remain vulnerable to further ogre assault - only way to prevent that: take out the ogres.

Spoiler:
Plus the rain should still be going, it should be clear to them at this point that the weather is unnatural, and from there investigations/divinations/etc. can lead them to Hook Mountain if Myriana and the history of the Black Arrows isn't enough. The Black Arrow survivors know that the Kreegs main stronghold is Hook Mountain.

In my game it was a challenge getting the party to the dam before they went straight to Hook Mountain after discovering that the Ft. Rannick attackers came from there; I had to distract them with Yap earlier than planned, because they were planning on skipping a return to Turtleback Ferry entirely.

Spoiler:

I totally agree with both Latreis and Ian - the Black Arrows themselves would be the first to suggest striking at the Kreeg clan hold on Hook Mountain. I also played up the fact that Fort Rannick needs a lot of repair, so my PCs hit upon the idea to go back there and gather people to start rebuilding the place. Honestly, though, the plotline is a bit soft around this part, which is good - it gives the PCs hooks to follow up on at their discretion. That might also be a good motivator to the PCs, not to mention the fact that they've picked up all sorts of stuff they need to sell, and while Turtleback Ferry isn't a great place to unload everything, it's better than nothing. When in doubt, appeal to player and character greed!
