Vicious weapons

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Vicious weapons are one of the few enchantments which (can) provide more DPR than another +1 to the weapon.

However this power comes at a price. Who do you think should get vicious weapons?

What about in PFS for example where edilons or animal companions are expendable since they auto replace at the end of the adventure.

Animals can't wield weapons so that's out.

Eidolons usually find better ways to be turned into cuisinarts without the disadvantageous of vicious weapons.

I think of it as a barbarian weapon, for the most part, or evil undead. Undead can gain temporary hit points via energy drain and use that to power the Vicious effect, so it works well for them. Barbarians tend to have a whole pile of hit points, so they can spare it, but to be honest they'll usually kill stuff in one hit anyway.

Obviously it's better if you have some way of regaining hit points. I played a psychic warrior in 3.5 with a Vicious weapon and a power that let him regain 1d6 HP with each attack, so the GM just called it a wash while I had that power active.

I never made a character that uses vicious weapons. But if I was to identify a character that could get more use out of vicious weapons relative to other random characters, I would point out characters that get Regeneration such as a level 12 Mountain Druid wild-shaped into a Troll.

I meant an amulet of mighty fists for companions.

So paladins seem like a good candidate especially since they have a DR breaking mechanic built in.

A vicious amulet of mighty fists seems like it would be pretty boss on a fair number of druid plant forms.

AOMF + Dragon Disciple in dragon form = a lot of extra damage via lots of natural attacks. And typically they can have cast Temp HP spell before hand. Or possibly had come from magus and have a spell strike bite of vampire drain or something like that.

This again is one of the enchantments I think would be good on darts or shuriken. If only it wasn't so costy and imo foolish to buy magically enchanted ones like that. Granted if it was via a magus enchantment that gets nifty

I believe vicious is melee only.

3.5 Frenzied Barbarians make the best wielders of vicious weapons.

Silver Crusade

My PFS Mystic Theurge will likely purchase a Vicious weapon enchantment. The extra 7 HP damage gives a 30% damage boost, and he can spare a few HP here and there. He tends to make two powerful attacks in Round 1 then avoids melee. I might chicken out. I'm eager to see some opionions on this topic. That may help me decide.

ooh good catch.. though not bad on a dagger iI guess. or a shield for a shield champion.

but those are some weirder cases. but still I find that enchantment better with folks who avoid damage more than those who can tank it. I guess.. so its just me.
flying dagger swash would be good.

Paladins, ironically enough, would probably be pretty good with vicious weapons. Swift-action self-heals are handy that way.

when it comes out. I can think of a few occult classes that might swing it nicely.

Probably also warpriests but not as good since warpriests lack a DR breaking mechanic unless they are a champion of the faith or a pummeling sacred fist.

Anyone with enough dr/- to ignore the self damage. Or an unarmed fighter with a merciful vicious weapon.

While there are still 2 adventures for PFS that tell you to ignore the damage with DR/- I'm fairly sure you can't ignore the damage with DR.

I have seen it used, it is a ton of fun. The player made a vampire-esq character, they used a great sword with vicious and then they put vampiric touch on it. We ruled that they healed the 2d6 from the great sword but not the 2d6 from the vicious. So they would deal 4d6 + 1.5 strength + etc and healing 2d6 a hit and then take 1d6 damage. They loved it, and I had fun playing up the idea that his hands looks scratched and scared to hell, as if a hell beast had bitten his hands many times. It played into his character and he adopted the idea of high risk, high reward by doing things that would hurt him if it gave him a gain or bonus. So yeah, vicious is fun from a crunch and fluff perspective. I cant speak much to summoned monsters or whatnot with it, but that character played a barbarian and he seemed to enjoy it.
