Looking to do some Mounted Combat? Why not Magus?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Okay, I was just looking through this in the rules, and MAYBE it takes a little too long to come online, but the image in my head is simply amazing.

So, Magus gets access to the Dimensional Dervish feat line, which is all good and well. Teleport + Full attack is awesome. Then I noticed that one of the prerequisites was Dimensional Assault which seemed a bit... well, lackluster.

But then I thought to myself: Wait, what if I wanted to maximize Dimensional Assault? What's the best thing I can do on a cha-...OH MY GOSH. And the WarpLanceCharge magus was born. Not only can you get one of the most mobile mounts ever in the form of Phantom Steed (though it eats a spell slot), but you get to do all the cool stuff that using a lance entails.

Two-Handed Damage? Check. Hand free for spellcasting? Check. Ignoring any difficult terrain, including allies and other obstacles? Check. The ONLY real concern I have is whether or not you can use Spellstrike with a held spell charge in conjunction with a charge. My get says "No", but my heart says "Please?"

What do you guys think? Is the image of a teleporting, arcane-fueled cavalier atop a Conjured Steed too amazing, or is it too little, too late, and asynergistic?

It would be nice for starting at high levels, but I couldn't imagine building up to it from first.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Phantom Steeds die if something so much as looks at it past a certain level.

"You conjure a Large, quasi-real, horse-like creature (the exact coloration can be customized as you wish). It can be ridden only by you or by the one person for whom you specifically created the mount. A phantom steed has a black head and body, gray mane and tail, and smoke-colored, insubstantial hooves that make no sound. It has what seems to be a saddle, bit, and bridle. It does not fight, but animals shun it and refuse to attack it.

The mount is AC 18 (-1 size, +4 natural armor, +5 Dex) and 7 hit points + 1 hit point per caster level. If it loses all its hit points, the phantom steed disappears. "

One fireball and odds are you are dismounted, not to mention any kind of melee or directed attack.

I like your idea, but to me you are going to need to get something more durable.

I wish there was a guide to mounts in general. Usually you see something for a particular class that discusses it in light of that class' features.

But I'd like to see one that detailed what you could buy, be it an animal or exotic mount, a figurine of some sort, a cohort, or monstrous mount. Then tell how you actually use a skill like handle animal to train mounts.

Actually I'd like to see a guide to handle animal that didn't have anything to do with druids or rangers. Seems like you could do something with a low level fighter and a pack of dogs, but you never see anything like this.

Or a pack of cats. You will destroy villages of commoners with ease.

Phantom Steed is the perfect mount for a sohei. Monastic Mount will give it your WIS to AC, your Evasion, and your spell resistance.

If I ever play a gestalt game, I think I'm going for a sohei/magus.

In my limited experience, Phantom Steed kind of sucks. Maybe Sohei really would make it cool, but for a non-Gestalt Magus the Animal Ally feat might end up working better.

Anyhow, I'm not sure if your basic premise of using Spell Combat with a lance will work. The rules for SC mention a light or one-handed melee weapon, and the rules for the lance never say it becomes a one-handed weapon. The difference between a "one-handed weapon" and a weapon wielding in one hand is obviously a little sketchy, but the way Power Attack works with lances makes me suspect that you might be out of luck here.

Spell Combat:
To use this ability, the magus must have one hand free (even if the spell being cast does not have somatic components), while wielding a light or one-handed melee weapon in the other hand.

Lance:
While mounted, you can wield a lance with one hand.

Had this exact same idea, actually. If you're playing a campaign where 3pp stuff is allowed, Into the Breach: Magus has the Primalist Magus. Replaces some spells with druid spells, replaces your 5th level Bonus Feat with a Bite attack, and replaces your 3rd level Arcana for a Druid animal companion, druid level is Magus level -2. That's the exact class I want to use for a thunder and lightning themed Magus. That would make it a sturdier mount than a Phantom Steed.

Well, with the familiar folio out, you could grab a dragon bloodline eldritch scion, and you can ride atop of your own flying mauler familiar by level 3 (requires you to be small sized or have Undersized mount tho).

Even with that boost, It would have been taken out in one swing from ANYTHING I faced in Eyes of Ten. Phantom Steed is great for travel, useless in any level appropriate combat.

Even if you used Mounted Combat to negate physical hits? Between Mounted Combat, improved evasion, and your AC bonus, and granting a nice buffer of temp hit points, it should last as long as it's not taking multiple focus attacks per round.

ONE HIT from any of those monsters would have taken it out.

Does the Magus have a way to gain access to the Summon Monster spells? There are a lot of potentially decent mounts on that list though there could be some table variation regarding whether you can ride them and what sort of penalties you'd take while doing so.

Yes... at 19th level. Unfortunately nothing you can summon comes trained as a combat mount, save for the Aerie of Eagles spell.

Ah, that's probably longer than the OP would want to wait. Until then I guess a halfling could ride a goat or pig familiar or anybody could buy or craft some figurines of wondrous power.

Halfling can ride any familiar as long as it has the Mauler archetype. In fact anyone can ride a Mauler if they have Undersized mount.

Spell Blending can pick them up before 19th. That said, it's an arcana or feat for each spell if you want them on-level.

Alternately, Samsaran Magus, copy from the Summoner's list, make GMs hate you.

Where is the Mauler archetype from?

Familiar archetype from Familiar Folio

EDIT: Huh, it's actually up on PFSRD, just hidden in the magical armors for some reason. So here Mauler

Scarab Sages

Or you could just take the Familiar arcana for it. Save those feats, or just spend one on Extra Arcana. I think with a Mauler-Archetype familiar, it might actually be doable, with your familiar's attribute bonuses making it even tankier, with the familiar feat that increases its hit points as a great way of adding some survivability.

Wow, those familiar archetypes look really cool. I probably never would have guessed that they're listed as a specific type of magic armor though. No wonder I couldn't find them!
